Hey everyone! I'm hoping to get some insight on the frame rust issue with 1st gens. I went to look at a 2000 TRD AC tonight and noticed these areas on the frame where rust was starting to form. The rest of the truck is very clean inside and out. It has 102,000 miles and was one owner (from what I was told.. still need to get carfax). Do these areas look like they'll be serious issues in the near future? The truck is in Colorado and I'll be moving to minnesota next summer so I know that doesn't help. But I'm hoping to get some peace of mind. Thanks for any advice! - RyanIMG_0429.jpgIMG_0431.jpgIMG_0432.jpg

I am no expert, but that looks great to me. Here in Wisconsin, death by salt makes everything look worse than that though...

Looks like mostly surface rust which can be dealt with quite easily.

Awesome. I guess I was just thinking that this is how it looks when it’s starting to get bad fast. If I get the truck I’ll be bringing it with me when I move to Minnesota and I was worried that I’d end up with a completely rusted frame in couple years. I suppose I could take a grinder and clean it up and paint it again or something. So this isn’t the beginning of the end for us truck?

    Welcome @rkenny!

The pictures you sent in really just look like surface rust to me. Bubbling on the frame coating can be fixed really easily with a steel brush/steel brush grinder wheel and some POR15. Bring it down to bare metal and wash with vinegar/or rust agent (wd40 etc) apply a few coats of base or POR and you're good as new.

Thanks for the reassurance! I am way more confident in buying this truck. You guys have been a great help. I look forward to posting things I’ll be doing to the truck in the future.

Also, quick tip: When buying older trucks bring a screwdriver and a small hammer (I have an old ball peen) to tap around questionable spots. If it goes through, leaves a big ol mark or crumbles... run! haha

Anyway, glad to have you here. Make sure and share everything you do and we're always here to help!

Inspect the frame for rust, and try to find a one owner '05 or '06.
