USB thumb drive stops being recognized

I have a 17 Tundra CM Platinum. I have been having nothing but issues with the usb port where I plug in a thumb drive with music on it. It constantly freezes up or stops being recognized where I have to pull it out, then put it back in and then it will work for a time until it repeats itself.

The dealership has replaced it twice and it still does it. Does anyone else have this issue and if so what was the solution.

My other question, does anyone know if there is a port on the back of the head unit where we can plug in a second aux usb cable where I can just have that cable run up from behind the head unit and out of the top of the dashboard where I could plug in that way instead?

 

I had an issue with my 2015 Tundra on the USB with thumb drive. Turns out it was "faulty" thumb drive(s). I ordered a slew of the adapters to run a micro SD 32gig card. Some of them run on 3.3v max input which is why mine were locking up and eventually would die altogether. You'd think it would be USB standard for 5v but apparently not true.

These have held up well, I ordered 3 of them and lost my first one after about a year. I like them because they are small and don't get in the way and they light up blue when communicating so you know its working or at least on.

What’s wrong with Bluetooth? If you have a BT device you can separate the phone from music. Also, doesn’t your USB port have an aux connection too?

 

There is an Aux option but it's a mini jack to the side of the CD player slot.

 

If it’s music quality the Bluetooth will be less then the usb connection. I just took my truck in to get the amp dialed back in after I messed with it a couple times. While adjusting it my buddy was like “why don’t you use the usb”? I didn’t know it mattered. Switched my iPhone cable to usb and shut off the Bluetooth and a lot less white noise. My amp was still turned up too much but now it’s dialed in.

 

What sized of thumb drive are you using, I have no problems with my 32g ones, I use SanDisk Cruzer Fit drives formatted to FAT32 and they work great. My first guess is you might be using a drive that's to big.

 

Try a new thumb drive. They have different speed ratings.

 

I have used multiple sizes of thumbdrives, from Lexar, Sandisk and Pny. 32gb to 4gb. Same issue, it's just freezing, or stops recognizing it. When it works the sound quality is great.
