say I fill up at, mmmm, a shell station. Big corporate gas station. I get 87.
And the next time I fill up, I’m in the middle of nowhere, and I go to Big Jim’s Podunk Ass Gas Station, and I get 87 again.
Is one places gas quality different from another, or is 87 87, no matter where I go?

I wonder about this too...as I use shell as well when I take my Tundra out on the road for work and no shell close by

All the gas comes from the same distribution point but places like shell and exxon put additives in the mix.

I think all the gas 87,89,91 or whatever is all the same shit and just a way to make $ of people. I’ve put all them for a long period of time thruout my life and I don’t notice one bit of difference.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #Scam

All fuel has to meet a standard. After that some companies do different additive packages. For instance, Shell will have a different additive package then your middle of nowhere mom and pops store.
Also buy at a chain fuel station that has high turnover rate. These places also take better care of the tanks, filtration system, etc.
there is no such thing as mid grade fuel. It is a mixture of premium and low grade fuel at the pump.

I always use the recommended octane fuel. I learned this at a young age with my MX bikes. Pistons/blocks aren’t cheap.

I’ve been told that if you can, you should try to use the same company’s fuel because your engine “gets used to the additives”, or something to that effect.
    Same for oil.

    Is that legit?

I only use Shell or Chevron gas in all my cars unless I’m in BFE and have no choice. Cheaper gas is not worth saving $200 a year on a $40k truck.

I wouldn’t worry to much about fuel stations except using top tier fuels. This would be almost impossible for traveling. We actually have pretty good fuel in CO. Hell, my diesel fuel filter should have been showing a pretty good dP across the filter at 16k miles and needing a new one from what others have said on forums with that mileage. Mine right meow is 68% life left.

Oil I have used a couple brands exclusively over the years. I’m about to switch over my truck from Mobil 1 to Rotella T6 and run that until I get another truck.

    Copy that.

Since I was told all that about gas I’ve tries to stick with shell for all my fill ups, and I’ve naver had a problem with bad gas, etc, so legit or not, I’ll try to stick with that I guess. Call me superstitious.

    I wouldn’t say you're being superstitious.

One of the more expensive repairs I have done on a newer truck was local at 1-70/Ward in Denver. A gas station was putting in new tanks and somehow water bypassed the filtration system at the pumps and on the diesel truck (on a diesel, if you get that alarm, it is already to late most likely). All new injectors, injection pump, fuel system flush, etc. 8500.00. The gas station paid for it without even arguing. They knew, and it wasn’t the only one.

There are differences. TopTier gas has gasoline rated by detergent. I'd stick with those stations it also depends on the region of the US. The heavy ethanol in the Midwest will cause issues to your truck if it's not a PPV or it still could cause issues. In California they have winter and summer blends. It's poor gas no matter what. I have a toyota that requires 93 or higher and all premium gas in CA causes my vehicle to knock. We can't buy high octane gas so I have to add it to each fill up I do. It really sucks because it ends up being about $4/gal.

Why Rotella? Just curious, when I drove a diesel I always ran Mobile. A diesel tech friend of mine always said Rotella sucked but I never heard a reason to back that up.

Rotella isn’t a bad oil, in fact I have seen the exact opposite. We had a customer with a 1st gen Dodge CTD with over 800k miles, original motor, great shape, always ran Rotella conventional. My last Dodge CTD was at 189k of pretty hard use. Motor was in great shape. The truck....well that was a different story. Lol

    So to answer your question:

Availability. I can get the 2.5 gallon jugs for 40-50.00 at Wally World. I can’t find the Mobil 1 but in the 1 gallon jugs for 25.00 each. I will do some more research on availability of 2.5 gallon jugs. If not, I might as well have the dealership do the oil change at 77.00. They do Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and AC delco filters. I’m not a fan of AC Delco filters, so I would supply the new Mobil 1 filter.

I had a 99 CTD and it was the same idea. Ran like a top but looked like hell. I definetly don't miss the 3 gallon oil changes haha.

I think about the little places and how long the fuel sits in the tanks collecting condensation, versus the larger stations that get used more often

I do. I even use the same owners chain and same pumps if possible. If I’m traveling that’s different, but local use its same same

I normally go to the "Top Tier" rated stations. As mentioned before, they all obtain their supply from the same distributor. One thing i did start seeing here locally is the addition of E15 as an available option. What would be the benefit of this??

Toyota motor oil is rebranded Mobil 1.

I try to stick to Exxon/Mobil for 90% of my fill ups if I can. Probably unnecessary but after blowing up my GM last year I don’t care.

I live in a small town in Indiana. I have to drive 30 min to get shell or BP or a large chain like that. I’ve compared mileage with tanks from sams club, marathon oil, speedway and country mark gas. I always go to a country mark if I can. It’s very popular in Indiana. But it gets me the best mileage. Those mom and pop stores go thru gas just like the big chains In my opinion. There is always 2 to 4 people fueling up when I go by. And as far as mixes, I’ve talked to a local fuel guy and they have summer and winter mixes. Ive always been told not to fill up at a station if a Semi is there filling up the under ground tanks because it will stir up the junk on the bottom of tanks. Not sure how true it is but something to keep in mind. And I work on a Farm and they have always used country mark gas, road and off road diesel. They have been running it for years and never an issue.

E15 is 15% ethanol (gas from corn) for Midwest states mainly. You need a flex fuel vehicle (FFV) in order to use this. You'll know if you have a yellow gas cap or flex fuel badged on your vehicle. I don't recommend it since it has low octane and can damage your vehicle. If you have a Toyota, Honda, BMW and a few others, the manual will tell you to avoid E15 or most any ethanol.
BTW, on E15 you'll also get less MPG.
