    PSA: WINTER DRIVING

Please share with everyone that might be headed into ski country this winter

    DO's:

    • Take extra cold weather clothing
    • Have adequate tires
    • Drive slowly
    • Leave plenty of room between vehicles
    • Have plenty of gasoline
    • Clean wipers regularly
    • -25 degree super fluid
    • Bring extra food
    • Know how to use your chains if you have them
    • Be ready for anything
    DON'T's:
    • Be cocky
    • Come unprepared
    • Drive fast
    • Drive without adequate tires
    • Think you have a 4x4 so you can go anywhere you want because you're from CA or TX :boink:
    • THINK YOU ARE PREPARED BECAUSE YOU WEAR PATAGONIA and HAVE A LIGHT BAR
Winter driving is no joke and can do serious damage to your vehicle, yourself, local property, others vehicles, and make me late to work because I have to pull you out of a snow bank (tips appreciated if I'm late for work :D)

    @jberry813 @ColoradoTJ
Feel free to expand as necessary

Don’t drive a RWD Lexus IS350 in snow and ice. Heard from a “friend “ that this sucks.

Chris, do yours have that “snow” button like my wife’s has? Living in the dirty south, we don’t get snow, but was wondering what that button actually does.

Keep all four tires in the plowed area of the road. Don’t drive with two tires in the snow, you’ll spin out

My wife has an IS350 with the snow button. We never use it either, but dealer told us it gives you less aggressive shifting and throttle response. Kind of the opposite of the tow/haul button in our Tundras

In all fairness, you never know who's browsing around this site. Could be a 30 year driving veteran or an 18 year old who didn't have a parental figure who taught them how to drive properly. Or, a tropical transplant who's never seen snow (some people who are born and raised here in Hawaii would fit that bill).

There's a very informative post about how to properly use your 4x4. Sure, some folks here know this like the back of their hand. But take me for example: this is my first 4x4. I have to do my homework on how to actually use it. That post gave me invaluable information.

This whole community (you included, Ms Angel ;)) is amazing at giving amazing information for no return. We should encourage posts that might seem obvious to some.

Remember: the term "common sense" isn't always as straight forward. What's common to me might not be common to you

I can assure you that this thread was initiated out of frustration. The High Rockies are not where one learns to drive in snow.

Frankly, most people from Denver know how to drive in it, but it's the entitled "know it alls" with more balls than sense that I was primarily speaking to.

    Informative, yes.
    Sarcastic, yes

Yea some stuff was obviously sarcasm, I get that. But someone could likely write about some snow tires they hate, or about a story of some idiot who did something idiotic.

After some time in places like Reddit, you realize that some gem story and comments come from unexpected posts.

I’m going to take the liberty of adding a few points:

Clean ALL the snow from your vehicle and scrape the frost /ice from your windows before driving it. That means having a snow brush and ice scraper. Driving around with a foot of snow on your roof is stupid - it will kill visibility for vehicles following if it’s blowing off your vehicle, slide forward down onto your windshield blocking your visibilty, or slide off the rear creating a hazard for those following.

Carry a shovel in your vehicle.

Don’t tailgate or pull closely in front of another vehicle - following distance on should be at least double of that on good road conditions. Not sure why? Go on Youtube and search multi-vehicle pileup.

Go as slow as you like in bad conditions but be courteous and let others pass too, even it means pulling over. More experinced winter drivers may well be safe travelling at faster speeds, but even if not, it’s not your duty to slow them down, and that just increases the risk to you and them.

Lastly, winter road conditions don’t mean that all other rules of the road don’t apply. On the contrary, they matter then more than ever, as it’s harder for others to avoid your stupidity, or for you to correct it at the last second.

Said Lexus “friend” still got home due to driving skill....at least that is what I heard....barely. Said friend will drive Duramax the next time snow is even mentioned on the news since they have a mechanical locker and 4wd is rarely needed, but is available. Said “friend” just had to rent a house on a really steep access road.

Colorado Springs area has a fair share of military, as you know. Many have never even seen snow or driven much here on steep passes and roads. This is one problem. The next problem is how fast the weather comes and goes. The last thing I see plenty of is people buying Rouch Mustangs or my personal favorite to make fun of...the Dodge SRT8 Charger, with a standard transmission as the only vehicle to drive. I see the occasional Corvette as well. One can always spot the guy that blew his whole savings/budget on one car. Then they can’t figure out why or how the car got stuck or slid off the road. Last but most important we have the morons that do have AWD/4wd and even snow tires that think they can still drive fast.

So looking forward to this winter season....

You forgot $70,000 Range Rovers that have "that guy" bragging about how much his skis cost as he does 65 from Lake George to Hartsel and hits that patch of ice from the wind blown snow.....ooops!!! Those nice skis end up in a monster pile of Buffalo chips next to his grill deep RR

In some states in the US, you can and will be ticketed for not cleaning all snow/ice chunks from the top of vehicle. You probably don’t see this a lot up in Canada since people actually understand the importance of cleaning off the roof of a vehicle, due to the added risk of a rather large chunk of hard snow/ice coming off and going through the person behind them windshield. Colorado is not one of those states...unfortunately.

However, now we do fine the idiots going up to the ski resorts or just traveling in winter conditions with crap tires, no chains or alternative traction devise in the vehicle and cause an accident or slowing of traffic. This has been working pretty good. 600.00 fine for not having good tires and then having to go buy 700.00+ worth of tires probably sucks.

Push the button next time your in it. It reduces power drastically, the throttle response none existent.
It does help, but my said “friend” should not have been driving his car in those conditions up a rather steep incline. An AWD IS/RC 350 would be best. The Continental DWS06 tires help a lot over the Pilot Michelin’s on before, but snow tires will be purchase at friends earliest convenience.

I never seen the ocean until I was 19 years old. Do you think the first thing I did was go rent a surfboard and hit the swells? No.
My first trip to Oahu, I surely didn’t go up to the north shore and attempt the 20’ swells either. Know why? Common sense. I didn’t know how to surf, or understand how powerful the ocean current is at the time. I surely didn't know how to spot a rip tide or how to survive it even though being an excellent swimmer at the time.

Situational awareness goes a long way in life, regardless of upbringing. Obviously sensitivity training needs to be offered as well.
