What’s the purpose? is it Sport mode? I’ve read that it’s only for towing or hauling heavy loads, so it seems a little wired that it’d be called sport mode if that’s the case..?

I used it in the dirt for some speed-to stay in gear/higher rpm without the automatic shift, use it to engine brake in the down hill with or without tow, and in 4L when just creeping through a rough patch of trail/uphill or downhill.

It is sport mode, for heavy loads you can use the tow\haul mode ( I am honestly not sure if that is available on every model). Sport mode does change your shift points to a higher RPM, but it also allows you the ability to manually shift gears. I like to turn them both on and turn your traction control off, then have some real fun ... :burnrubber:

    S actually stands for sequential.

It would be more useful if you could use the shifter while in D. Instead of having to switch to S. That's an option on my wife's car. Sometimes you just want to downshift one gear and it's not even worth switching to S. Come on Toyota.

I looked in the manual and it is just listed as S mode, so l’d imagine you are correct. Sport mode in my wife’s Subaru is set up very similarly, but they actually call it Sport mode. :notsure:

I have an sr and is an option..it keeps more torque at the wheels by changing the shift points..you can tow with it as it locks the transmission to the lower four gears..but tow mode is always best when towing as there's more benefits with it. Using S, tow mode and shutting the "nannys" off = fun mode..

The reason is "sequential" is due to the dual clutch transmission. Basically when the truck is getting ready to shift the truck will spool the next gear and both match the shift occurs. I have not research this answer but that's how it was explained to me..

    This is correct!
Sequential is what you're in, not a sport mode on the Tundra or any Toyota which offers the availability of the S on the shifter. The only vehicles with the "sport" mode will have a sport button, as in the Rav4/Corolla S... etc

Aftermarket exhausts can drone when trans in 6th and converter locked and mph under 60. You can use S to move between 5th and 6th to get out of drone range.

The tranny, while in regular auto mode, has built-in AI programming. It anticipates the driver's intent. If you let up completely on the throttle, it anticipates that you will be braking at some point soon, and will downshift the tranny sooner than most autos would normally do. I've found this to be an MPG killer if you live in a hilly area. It just doesn't coast well downhill with a closed throttle. The "S" mode cancels the AI programming, so the truck coasts a lot farther. When you switch over to "S" mode, the default gear that the tranny goes to is 4th, so you have to be quick to push the laver forward to have it go immediately to 6th without a downshift. If you put it in "S" mode at a stop it will have 4th as the highest automatic gear, unless you you push the lever forward. You can push it forward and hold it for a second or so and it will move right to 6th. But you have to "bump" it down to downshift, one bump per gear. If you have manually put it in 1st gear, you can bump it up through the gears with short movements, or hold it to go directly to 6th as the highest gear. If you put 6th in the display, and just drive it like a regular automatic. You'll notice no difference at all (except that it will coast better). It will start in 1st and shift through the gears automatically. I use the "S" mode all the time now and get about 1-1.5 MPG better than I did in the regular mode. I just put it is "S" mode, hold the lever forward to make the display indicate "6" and drive it like a regular automatic.

My MPG figures come from a test I've been doing over the past 6 months and 10000 miles. MPG prior was about 16, mixed city/hwy. Over mentioned time period, it has been a consistent 17.3. Calculated figures, of course. I've found that the displayed MPG for each fillup (reset each time) has been all over the place, from 15.8 to 18.3, but the calculated MPG is always much closer to 17.3. I had my son give it a try where he lives, bigger city, more stop and go, but flat terrain. He only messed with it for a few weeks, but didn't think it made much difference in his '07 Tundra.

I toggle up and down through the gears often, it shifts nicely when you leave it in 6.
