    Hey guys,
I've ghosted the forums for a while, I've had tundras but I am now in a Crown Vic, but I have a serious issue and it requires some advice.

My father has an 05 Tundra SR5 TRD w/250k all stock, and has (cringe, I know) brought it to the yota dealer for EVERY scheduled maintenance matters and all work in general.

He was mailed a letter back on '14 about the 1st gen recall on the frame. Took it to the dealer and they said they could either spray it or replace it - he got it sprayed.

Just less than 1 month ago he had his entire front end suspension replaced (his strut assembly, I kid you not, fell off, the wheel was an inch away from the top of the well) So, he got the front struts done, the rear shocks, rear brakes adjusted, and e brake pivot replaced - several thousand dollars later he's good to go.

The 05 is getting it's oil changed today at the dealer and the tech tells him the frame on the passenger side rear is absolutely cracked through and through and has serious structurally damaging rust, tech tells him it is not safe to drive at all and it's so bad that it could snap if he hit a pot hole hard. He drove it home lol. Funny enough the 13 y.o. truck does not have a speck of rust on any part of the body (even fenders!) other than some typical northeast surface rust on the under-body and the frame rot.

The problem is, the dealer techs were JUST working on it front to back and WITHIN INCHES of the totally cracked and rotted frame less than a month ago. How can they explain that they let him spend several thousands and not let him know about this serious truck damning issue. This truck was taken to the dealer for every single thing besides a few brake jobs. His frame was also sprayed 2-3 years ago from the recall? What can we do in this pinch? I need you guys' help as we are not in a place to buy a new vehicle.

Well, just because a vehicle goes into a dealership, doesn’t mean you get a 450 point inspection and inch by inch inspection of the frame every time you take it in.

That being said, it totally sucks ass that all that money was spent on a 13 year old truck to scrap it a month later.

I would have had the frame swapped out myself. Spraying the frame doesn’t stop current rusting. Your Dad only bought a little time.

Personally, it sucks, but I wouldn’t put any more money into a 13 year old truck.

Haha, of course I know that - but the techs were working within inches of the rust.

Again, this is not MY truck and I would have acted differently.

    Thanks for the advice.

Was the frame replacement at no cost?

Toyota corporate are a bunch of Thieves.there needs to be a class action lawsuit once again for these trucks. My 04 limited tundra has frame rot and they said that they wouldn't replace the frame because it was sprayed in 2014. They just cover up pre-existing problems and make things worse with the spray.contact Jim lentz (ceo American branch) and bombard him with emails. I received a cease-and-desist letter to stop "harassing" them.or contact NHTSA. They said that if they received enough letters and complaints that they will make Toyota recall the frames. Toyota is putting many lives in danger. I cannot understand why you can build a truck with a great motor, transmission, and Powertrain but you cannot build a reliable frame. It's like building a house with a crumbling Foundation.

This sucks but as @ColoradoTJ stated, should have taken the frame replacement when it was offered.

1st there was never a frame recall on the 05 models, there was a service campaign and the repair was CRC coating OR frame replacement. To qualify for the replacement there had to be holes larger than 10mm in specific areas of the frame. Didn't matter if it was super rusty as long as holes weren't present.

2nd having vehicles with rusted frames in the past. It is entirely possible that the frame damage wasn't immediately noticeable a month ago. I've had some that looked fine until you touched them and they crumbled.

If it were me parting the truck out would be the best option. A new frame will run you anywhere between $3-8k in parts, plus whatever labor you're paying for or doing yourself.

I was thinking more along the lines that, the dealer was going to do one of the two. Either, spray it or replace it depending on how bad they determined it was. I doubt they gave him a choice. Although this thread is a couple years old.

Am I missing something the OP said they were told about the recall, and opted to spray instead of replace?
I'm sorry for all the mess he dad is in now but of course hindsight should of had the frame replaced when offered.

I seriously don’t think they give you a choice. They determine (the dealer) to do one or the other. Anyone in their right mind would pick the new frame over just some bullshit spray. Unless they were lied to about how great the magic spray is.

Correct, there was no choice in the matter. It had to meet the diagram below to qualify for a new frame. It also had to be done by July 2015 to qualify for the LSC.
