Well I finally saw the backseats of a Crewmax. This mod will not work on a Crewmax. The back of the seat does not slide up and down like the Doublecabs so it will not be able to hook on.

I did this mod about 1 year after getting my truck. I decided to do this when I installed my leather. It made things easier especially when installing the amps and wiring behind the seat. Yup will never understand why Toyota couldn't do this from the factory. It can't be a safety issue since the seats locks in when put back in place.

Thanks @gosolo, for pointing me to this thread.
Thanks for posting that it still locks in place after the mod-- needed to know to feel safe doing it.

I'm guessing based on what y'all have described here, that the panel between the CM roll-down back window and the back seat probably isn't rigid/ strong enough to support the weight of that back seat in a collision-- or probably using this kind of hook attachment would scratch the window as it moves past :notsure:

so they designed it so it's locked in place at the base, not the top...? Probably doesn't make anyone with a CM feel better.

It does make me feel better, for a minute, about not having that roll-down window in my DC. :yay:

This is a great mod and easy to do! Glad I can help.

I could have had a CM but didn’t want one then and don’t want one now!

DC is so much better in every way that counts!

I think that Toyota is clueless about stuff like this. There are similar things on the Tacomas. One of mine is why the almost impossible (in certain light conditions or with sunglaases on) to read instrument cluster?

I don't need a CM but got it for the rear power window. Makes backing up trailers at night a whole lot easier.

Yep, I totally agree! And as I've never had one, I've never missed a roll-down window. Love having room to sleep in the bed!

I had a loaner Crewmax for one day. Have to admit that rear window was pretty cool. But I wouldn’t give up neither the longer bed nor the fold down seats for it. Definitely not both.

Yep, that’s the only thing I like about em, but I knew I’d have a shell permanently on my rig so that window would be pretty useless....78CF3285-92C1-42E6-A118-A682D5145671.jpg

EDIT: Nevermind, I found in the write-ups where they explain how it latches back in.

I'm not sure I understand. Once you do this mod, how do the seats latch back in? This is literally the one thing that keeps me from buying a tundra and have stuck with my Tacoma.

I really wish they would design the back seat of the Tundra the same way they handle the back seat in the Tacoma....the seats both fold down AND flip up. When flipped up, they come standard with under seat storage. When folded down, they have built in storage behind the seat, and the back of the seat has a nice hard flat surface.

I love it because it works great when we have the dogs laying down in the back seat.

Go back and look at the pictures of the mod. The seats do latch back in place per the mod poster. Only thing missing that sounds like a good idea is that hard back that the Taco has as you discussed. Maybe someone can mod that for the new round of this thread.

I use that open back of the seat to store flat items. I have my old front window sunshade stuffed in one of them, figured it might come in handy for something. And I have a machete/saw in a sheath stuffed behind the double wide seat.

When I had my Tacoma I really liked the fold down back seat and thought I would not like the seat in the Tundra. I liked the flat surface and the behind seat storage. After owning the Tundra for a while I like the extra space with the fold up seat. I just wish the seat back folded forward or the whole seat moved forward to access space behind the seat. I rarely haul passengers and storage is more important. I have managed to fit all of the stuff I had in Tacoma behind/under rear seat and under front seats. Although Not as clean looking as with the Tacoma.

There is a grab handle on the driver's side in my 2011 Tundra.

I will have to try this mod on my truck, mainly to see if you can cram crap up behind the rear of the seat with it up and the back of the cab. Personally I like how you can cram crap under that rear seat in my double cab that you don't want people to see. The lady's purse, laptop, my backpack, provides some nice covered storage.

Also one other thing that really annoys me with the double cab seat, is why don't the headrests fold down?? They do that in the newer 2016+ Tacomas, along with most of the other full size trucks. I took the headrests out because they block your view in the back, but then you have to stick them back in when you have passengers, would be a lot nicer if they just folded down out of the way.

So for my Crewmax Brothers and Sisters. Have we looked into putting in the Seats from a Sequoia in the Back? Perhaps stealing the Pivot point from a Double Cab seat and replacing it in our seats? Come on, we are better than this.

@JoshO. I will look into this but it’s not going to be anytime soon, maybe in 3-4 weeks... I have a parts truck that’s DC so maybe I can fool around with it and see what can be done. :D

    One million likes to you!

On another note I was looking at the old tundra and it appears the seat is on a track that may mount in place of the current rear seat. Although for those Bad Asses of you that only want to seat 4 in a Crewmax, taking the Sequoia second row with the console and putting in the back could be amazing. I wished I had a shop, I think I could do some amazing things :notsure:.

Did this mod today, pretty straight forward. Used a grinder to cut the brakets about 1” and angled it from there. Also used a wrench with a 18” extension and a t-30 torx bit and was able to take all brackets off, not difficult just uncomfortable. While I was at it, dynamated the rear, hope it helps with the subs and vibrations.
