Hey guys how’s it going. Long time Ford guy converted to the Tundra about 6 months ago. Double cab long bed white with the 5.7 and 4.30 gears 4wd. Love the truck way better than my 15 f250. Any how someone decided to smash into my rear bumper on the passenger side. Do I a. Just replace the damaged parts on that side or b. Replace it with an aftermarket one that’s similar. My problem is most of the aftermarket step bumpers say they fit 14-16 not 17. Anyone know why? Was there a change in design? Anyway thanks in advance. P. S. I use my truck for all Kinds of crap so the bumper will probably get banged up so that’s why I’m leaning towards a less expensive aftermarket one. It’s not going thru insurance company either.

17 bumper is same as 14-16, up to 18. Same styles. Sometimes aftermarket ones are same price as stock ones, and more beefier.

Shouldn't matter with a 17. IMO, aftermarket bumpers leave a lot to be desired for the Tundra regarding departure angle. But you could definitely find something that would take a hit better than the stock one.

Just curious, did the person that hit you give you cash on the spot to replace the bumper? Or why wouldn't you have insurance pay for it?

Welcome from Texas! Looks like these guys answered your question for the most part. How much of your rear bumper is messed up? Can you share pics? if it's only the end cap that would be cheaper for now than a whole new bumper. Give you time to see what aftermarket ones you like better.

Check out this thread to see what is available! It's front and rear bumpers for the 3rd gens....it's updated as more come out too.

Check out the Ranch Hand Sport rear bumper. You will be pleasantly surprised on price and departure angle. I want one for my 07.

Nice bumper but very little to "step" on. Geometry/stealth look is the killer for me on that one...but a great price. The Ranch Hand Sport is still a step bumper.

Thanks for all the responses. By someone I mean a family member. I’d prefer not to use insurance because it goes on the car fax bs and ruins trade in. That being said it’s just the passenger side bumper that got smashed but after pricing the gen Toyota parts it’ll be cheaper to go aftermarket. No pics because it’s at a friends shop. At least now I know it should be the same as the 14-16. Thank you all again.

The vast majority of Tundra owners do absolutely nothing with their trucks compared to what we do here.... and the Toyota powers-that-be know that.

I put an Expedition One rear bumper on my 2016 Limited and absolutely love the fact that it’s a heavy duty solid steel one piece rear bumper. Heavy, yes, but anyone who bumps it will have a hell of a dent!

A little of this and a little of that.

Matt, do you know if the Ranch Hand comes with the cut outs for the sonar?

They don’t, I am looking for rear bumper replacement and called ranch hand last week to inquire about the cut outs. They said people have purchased these and drilled the out themselves, but I assume you’d have to get a grommet to fit..... I can’t decide on what bumper to get either, been looking hard for a month.

Pretty sure it doesn't, but not hard to DIY. I think Ranch Hand left them off since they use Long Horns for sonar.................I've never had sonar bumpers. Never needed them but I can see the benefits of having them.

On my last truck, I got the local metal fab shop to make me a bumper. It ended up cheaper than the ones you find online, and one-of-a-kind. Good luck!

Makes sense. Sounds like the hit was only on the side so only damage to the bumper. I got rear ended and the few people there that saw the damage afterwards thought it would just need a new bumper. Turned out I had frame damage for $28k in repairs so they totaled it.
