What 4 wheeler is worth buying?

Hey group I'm looking into getting a 4 wheeler. I'm overthinking this but that's just me. What 4 wheelers are worth it and what are not? Need some advice!

 

I'm no help. Always wanted one but never thought I would be able to use it enough to justify it. When I buy my next house that has some land, I will be purchasing one.

 

Utility or sport quad? What are you going to be using it for?

 

Yamaha. But that may be just me. Stuff is very well built. Not into quads anymore but have a sidexside now a rhino and its has been damn near bullet proof. And I beat the piss out of it. So ya Yamaha only.... Hear at least.

 

Depends on your intended use I suppose. For ranch work I use a Kawasaki Mule. For off-road adventure I have a Suzuki quad runner. Can't help you if you're interested in racing quads.

 

Honda or Yamaha will be the best, but do cost more.

Mainly for riding in the mountains, taking on hunts, and occasionally going on some fun trail rides. I'm thinking utility atv. A lot of people have said stay away from Polaris atvs. Not sure why. I do like the Yamaha grizzly and have found a few used ones. The Polaris ones I've seen have the snow plow and winch which I would use in the winter. There's just to many options out there.

 

Honda is the Toyota of dirt bikes and quads.

 

From my experiences with ATVs, Hondas work FOREVER. Might not be the fastest, smoothest, or most powerful but they're about as bulletproof as an ATV gets. Yamaha's are very good as well, not quite as well engineered for longevity IMO but they tend to have slightly higher performance than the hondas. A little more power, little more suspension, etc.
Personally I kind of became a Honda ATV fan, though I've owned Yamahas as well. For Sport/Utility like you're looking for Honda Rincon or Foreman would suit you, as would a Yamaha Grizzly/Kodiak, etc.
Sit on them both and see which you like better, hard to go wrong with either.

Not the biggest Fan of Polaris, Suzuki, or Arctic Cat ATVs.

I'll be the token Polaris fan in the room. Sportsman X2 550 here. Dump bed in the back that can haul 400 lbs, integrated front storage box that can take another 120 lbs on top, hidden passenger seat back in the bed of the cargo box (main seat back folds down to become passenger seat), 1500 lb towing capacity. With the long wheelbase (57") and power steering, this baby is smooth as silk on trail rides and has been more than enough power for everything I've asked from it so far. I've used it to pull downed trees out of the road as well as towing my old 1200 lb popup trailer in and out of the side yard. Bought it in Dec of '13 and have had zero issues with it. I'll definitely buy Polaris again and am seriously considering picking up an Ace or RZR for my next ride-

 

Me personally for power and durability I would go with a Can-Am. But you are going to pay for it. They are made by the same people who make the Sea-doo Jet ski

 

We have a 2000 Rancher and Recon, both still run and will crank with ease. The Recon needs the carb gone through from sitting so much. For 15 yr old 4 wheelers, Honda gets my nod. The Rancher has been used as a battering ram and missed treated enough that I have no complaints if she killed over, but she won't. It doesn't even smoke.

 

A few years ago I was in the market for the same thing. After all my research I decided to go with a bramd new Yamaha Grizzly (550 i think, too lazy to google right now) with EPS. Ideally I wanted two but I couldn't afford two. A few days before I was planning to buy the new Grizzly a friend of mine was selling two used 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500HO's.. To give you some background on me, I am a huge Honda dirt bike fan, I own three of them. When I was doing my research I narrowed it down to Polaris or Yamaha. The Honda's with IRS didn't impress me. So aa new Polaris with EFI and EPS was my 2nd pick. Even though the 2001's couldn't compare (no EPS, EFI, certainly noy new) I decided to buy the two old Polaris' and I will tell you what, I am impressed with them. If I am ever in the market for a new quad I will probably go with a Polaris. I don't use them as much as I planned, but I have used them for ripping out shrubs, pulling logs, pulling my 2 place ATV trailer around back, plowing snow, and riding in the woods. They get the job done.

Spaced Can Am last night. They'd be right in there with Honda and Yamaha for me. Their Rotax v twin's are pretty much unbeatable and their trailing arm IRS is really nice as well. A Outlander 800/650, or even 1000 would be high on my list when looking at ATVs right now.

 

I hunt lions for 6 months every year in CO. In the rockiest, steepest, nastiest places you will ever get into. It is tough on any vehicle you use. When we get snow, it can drift several feet. We hunt from 6500 ft. up to 12,500ft. I put up to 2000 miles a year on a quad. Needless to say, we are hard on ATVs.
So for altitude above 5-6000ft., you need higher CCs. 500 CC is absolute minimum. If you will ever run tracks, you need a 650 or bigger. Fuel injection and locking differentials are a must. A lot of quads don't even have them! So you only have power to two wheels. They will save you in a bad situation or deep snow.
I currently have two 2012 Yamaha 700 EPS. I've ended up with these after almost 30 years running quads. Forget Polaris for anything other then easy trail riding, they are junk. I could write a book of all their problems. Can Ams just don't hold up for the long haul. Kawasakis have excellent engines but hard to tune because they are twins. But they have by far the best locker of all of them. And tons of power. Hondas are very good also. Excellent dependability. Never owned a Suzuki, and don't plan on it.
