My truck is scheduled at the dealer for the TSB for factory brake controller fix. I am buying a 25' travel traliler 5500lbs to 6500lbs.

Tell me whats the real deal. Is the factory controller with the TSB fix going to do the deed or do I wire in a Tekonsha P3 and call it a day?

Can't hurt to give the OEM one a second try....

Understood. Bear with me. This is me being an idiot. I am driving cross country to purchase the trailer and THAN driving back home. I will not have a chance to test the adequacy of the factory + TSB.

I had added a P2, but reinstalled the Intergrated Brake Controller and had the TSB applied last Monday, I can now feel the trailer brakes on my car hauler when I have the gain set on 5. Looks like a win for me, but won't know for sure until I tow heavy.

Thanks HT that helps. How heavy is that trailer (current) and why did you go back to the OEM brake controller?

Roger dodger. That is a tough call. I have a 14' so I never had the pleasure/displeasure of using the OEM BC.

From the sounds of it, you can't go wrong with the the P2 or P3. You will have a safe trip for sure and can always resell it if you learn the OEM BC works properly.

On the other hand you could have a miserable unsafe trip.

Maybe if you can install it yourself on the trip, buy it, don't open it, return it if you don't need it?

    Good luck!

Buy the Tekonsha and adapter from Amazon to have on standby. If the factory one takes a dump slap it in. If not, return it when you get home.

Do you know the TSB number or can you attach it here? I haven't towed yet but would like Dealer to update it in case I do.

Would that mean it is fixed on Toyota's dime?

I called my locale Toyota dealer and I am covered. It's a software update and a new relay.

I reinstalled the IBC just to make Toyota acknowledge there was an issue, I went around with them twice on the issue of it not working. If it doesn't work tom my satisfaction, I'll complain some more and then put the P2 back in. The trailer empty is around 2000 pounds, grosses up to 9,999 pounds loaded.

Got my truck back. Have not tested with a trailer. They said the TSB is just a reflash. Display looks different but I do not have a picture of what it looked like before.
Both modes are (manual) gain and input goes to 100.

So, if I go to the dealer at the 15k check-up they will reflash if I ask without charge? Have used the controller all summer without issue, but it doesn't seem as powerful as the old aftermarket one in my last vehicle.

A little of this and a little of that.
I’m scheduled for service this coming Tuesday and they’re going to reflash mine as it is the original software. Yes, my trailer brakes don’t work at all. White knuckle driving :burnrubber:

I had the re-flash done about a month ago. I tow a 30' toy hauler. Before the re-flash the electric over hydraulic mode did work well but was very touchy as low speeds and the electric only did not engage the brakes at all. After the re-flash I can now use the electric only mode but I have it set to 6. I will say though, the Toyota dealership gave me a hard time with the update. They didn't even know about it and told me everything checked out to speck. I had to go home, print out the TSB and bring it back in before they would do the software update. It was a total pain in the ass. The conversation got so heated I thought they were going to call the police on me. My advice, bring a copy with you. I have heard others having had the same experience that I did'--good luck

I keep hearing this same experience with dealers doing this update. Why??

I'm heading to the dealer in the next week or two to have this done, and will report back, but why are so many people having issues?

People that work for Toyota/dealerships, what's the deal? Some notes in the TSB? Is there a downside to this update as opposed to ripping out the OEM controller and installing a P3? I simply don't understand why so many people are having such a hard time getting this update.

I'm quite curious how my dealer responds and will report back.

reflash worked for me, I picked up my car trailer about 400 miles away and was the first time I had to use trailer brakes with this truck, it sucked with an empty 2k trailer. Took it in for the reflash, dealer gave me no hassle at all. I then made the same 400 miles trip but with another truck on the trailer for a combined weight of 6500lbs and it stopped well with the reflash.

If they did the reflash would the range go to 100 now? Is there a way to see a noticeable difference, because it looks the same to me.

Took the truck in for the 15k check-up, brought the TSB number with me and even attached it to the paperwork. (Had to remind them twice) This was on Tuesday. Towed the trailer this evening and didn't notice ANY difference at all. Still the range goes to 10, still have to set it at 9 to feel anything. The paperwork says; "Found vehicle is part of the TSB; Completed repair and confirmed vehicle working as intended."

I could understand if I'd not towed in a while and might have "forgotten." But, we just returned from a 6 hour drive camping and it sure feels the same as last week.

I'm curious too. I also just had 15k service done, attached TSB and had service manager discuss the work with Master Tech. But the paperwork I got after picking up the truck just said customer requested TSB on brake trailer but didn't specify work was done. Service adviser said it was but not confident. I'll call him back to ask him to check with Tech.

All I know is the TSB fix worked for me. No complaints. I'm towing a 25' Airstream with the controller set to 5 it feels right no push no pull. When I set gain to 9 or 10 the trailer brakes are pulling me...does not feel right and I'm no slowing down faster.

I had the reflash done a few months back and just had a chance to pull my 4500lb TT yesterday 250 miles home from NC. I’m used to a P3’s proportional system and this POS integrated system is a far cry from that. I did get better performance after the reflash over the original software but, on electric/manual, the gain needed to be set at 9 for proper balance. It only goes to 10, not 100.

I got overall better balance in the electric/hydraulic mode, but horrible at slow speeds, even set as low as 3.5.

My trailer brakes are indeed adjusted correctly.

I am going to call Toyota today and complain - again. I am also going to order the ESP panel and install my P3, which just pisses me off. I was so excited about the IBC and loved the factory look of the system but, it’s just unsafe and not worth it.

We just got back from a 4,000 mile round trip Maine to Asheville NC. then to Charlotte, Fayetville, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach and finally back to Maine. Overall I was not impressed with the IBC after the re-flash The Hills in Asheville are at a 6% grade and a better breaking system would have done wonders for my peace of mind. I had to set the IBC to 9.5 to feel anything and at one point the front breaks on the truck got pretty hot and glazed a bit. I'm thinking about putting in the P3 as well which totally pisses me off since the truck is suposed to come with an IBC. On a side note, still amazed at the power this truck has. I pulled in to a weigh station just to see what the trailer was at and looks like I was 8,895lbs. I had no problem maintaining speed on any hill, I assume this has a lot to do with the 4:30 gearing. My brother who has a 2017 Denali with the 6.2 seemed to shift gears a lot more on the hills than my tundra. I also averaged 9.5 mpg for the whole trip which is considerably better than I expected.
