It has been discussed previously here that tailgates are easy to steal. For this reason a deterrent or security device is needed.

The simplest and cheapest way is to install your standard hose clamp. I wouldn't consider this a deterrent because a simple screwdriver could be used to remove.
    image.jpg

A more expensive device that is more secure with unique key is the McGard Tailgate Lock at ~$25. Another is the Masterlock tailgate lock at ~$20

The option I chose is a security level in between the ones listed above: a key hose clamp.

You can get the key hose clamp at most hardware and auto parts stores.
    image.jpg

Unscrew till the end of the clamp comes out.
    image.jpg

Wrap around the tailgate attachment on the lower right side with the tailgate open.
    image.jpg

Remove the key and you are left with a square attachment. A screwdriver can't be used to open like the standard hose clamp.
    image.jpg

    Here is the key removed.
    image.jpg

Now you can grab a beer and stop worrying about your tailgate getting stolen.

:headbang: ( I already grabbed a beer) If I really was a bad guy , I could use some tin snips and take your tailgate in seconds.

Any one of these will suffice aganst a simple hose clamp with "key":images_20325f8ec9355881bdc5215edbccd9061285a0cc.jpg

    But not this.

It's true, it's not full proof, but hopefully it would slow the avg dipshit down enough to where they might think it's taking to long and move on.... That in combination with the tailgate lock is about as good as it gets. If they want it that bad, chances are they may get it.

I did this and wrapped it in electrical tape so it wouldn't scratch my paint.

It doesnt matter what device u use. If a criminal wants it bad enough they'll get it. Just like locks on doors ..if someone wants in bad enough, they'll get it. These tail-gate clamps do make them work a little harder. Criminals usually want to get in, and get out as quickly as possible. If they run across the clamp, or any locking device it maybe just enough for them to say

The police can only get to you so fast. Usually too late, just in time enough to fill out a report. All lives matter by the way. Back up your local police force. The job sucks to begin with. They have families and want to go home after their shift. I back the PIGS (with all due respect).:infantry::oldglory:

This is great. I wasn't aware that this was such a problem! Bought the masterlock 8253DAT just now.

On my Tacoma, I painted my hose clamps black and put the screw in a very difficult position to remove.

Also, on my '15 Tundra, the tailgate locks with a key making it near impossible to steal.

For the past 20 years, I've never taken the keys out of my truck. I couldn't tell you where a key to my house is, I've never used one. It's one of the reasons I live where I live.

Who's the insane one? You're the one that lives where you have to worry about locking everything you own up all the time, think about it. If you think you can get get by my fence/gate and very friendly dogs, feel free to give it your best shot! I'd love the entertainment!

I live in a nice area, actually. Having to be involved in law enforcement (volunteer), I can tell you they target nice areas for a reason...due to a false sense of security many have.

"I live in a nice area, actually." I guess we have different definitions of what a nice area is. I would suggest if you live in an area that you have to worry about everything you own being stolen, then you might want to rethink your definition.

I bought the pop and lock so I know it's locked whenever I hit my remote control. Locks tailgate automatically, but this will add a little more security.

Looking at the directions for that, it appears to be simple enough to install. Was it?

My definition of a nice area would be the Sand Lake neighborhood where I lived in Anchorage. Every household had guns of some sort. (I'd bet on it). Zero crime? no. But very few house break ins. Only petty rummaging thru the occasional unlocked vehicle by meth heads . You would be real stupid to try to enter someones house. You would only do it once if really super stupid. Most home owners rented out rooms so there would be a high likelihood of someone being home at any given time. Tailgates could still get ripped off, although with Anchorage being not a real large town, not sure if posting on Craig's would be a good idea. We had a LEO that lived on the corner and was very pro gun. I don't recall seeing one cop show up in my neighborhood in the 10 months I lived there. (Anchorage gun ownership was over 70%) Highest of any city it's size of all 50 states!!

We have a saying in law enforcement, "Human + desire + opportunity = crime"

I have seen doctors, lawyers and engineers who make hundreds of thousands of dollars every year, steal the stupidest things.
One actual 'rocket scientist' I arrested for shoplifting had over $300 in his pocket.
An orthopedic surgeon in my area was arrested for intentionally and repeatedly door dinging another surgeon's Benz over the course of a year.
You can live in the nicest neighborhood in the world and still be a victim of crime.
There is no town in the United States that has a 0% crime rate. Sorry.

You're gonna feel pretty silly one morning when you walk out and your tailgate is missing and you might have been able to prevent it with a $1 hose clamp.

My older sister/brother in law live in Anaheim Hills, CA. Near the top. Very, very expensive "nice" area. When I would visit, there would be police choppers buzzing that area every night it seems. Rich people can be equally stupid. They just get a nicer lock up. :ballchain:

You might want to check out my earlier "Tailgate Missing" post that actually started this whole conversation to begin with which pretty much covered this with pics. Redux is OK. There are a few options that can be done to deter or at least slow down the bad guys without using any version of hose clamp devices that can be defeated in seconds. Thought I covered this already.

Just curious, would you recommend any brand of radar to defeat/fool current LEO detectors or just recommend to "OBEY" the speed limit? heh heh. [IMG]

Here's the thing..radars can be toggled on/off...normally when Im out with a buddy on a ride, we turn it off and on when traffic is coming up..by that time it's too late.

On laser, we have you already as soon as we get the dot on your vehicle.
