that her best furry friend passed away when she didn't even get to say goodbye? Her English mastiff (who hasn't been doing good for about 2 months now) passed away this evening. Her pup was hurting for a while now and she knew it cause she told me about her all the time (my ex kept her dog and my cane corso in the divorce)....could barely walk, trouble breathing, potty accidents all the time.

He just messaged me that she stopped breathing this evening. My little girl has had that puppy for almost 10yrs.....she is going to be a wreck.

She was a very loving and protective dog. I know I'm heart broken....i can only imagine how my daughter will be once she finds out.

This is Raven when we first moved into our new house....she loved the water!FB_IMG_1477038364188.jpg
This is my oldest and Raven when they were both about 2.5yrs old....FB_IMG_1479656592651.jpg

Thanks guys....I'm just trying to figure out how to tell my babies.

Thanks @Sean266....basically the same as loading a human family member...she's already lost her grandfather and a week after his death my daughter found his dog passed away in the backyard....this is all apart of my concern too

    I just went through this.

I just told them. They were like "oh, ok."

My youngest teared up a bit and was sad, and then we just thought of all the funny/fun times/experiences we had with the dog. That took a while and all was good.

Sorry to hear about this. Never easy losing a family member.

I'm so sorry for your loss... It's not easy at any age to lose a loved one.

With that said though, while it will be heartbreaking to see your daughter so upset, I think it's an incredibly important life lesson that is best learnt at a young age.

I still remember when i lost my first pet at a young age and I remember every single one since, there have been lots, I had an awesome childhood. But, for all that sorrow came experience, I became stronger and better equipped to deal with heartache and loss, I went from needing support to providing it. When my father died, that experience allowed me to support and help my mom and sister rather than get consumed with sorrow.

So yes, today week be brutal, for both of you but will be a critical emotional building block for her helping her become a stronger woman later.

Best of luck to you both, thinking of you

Had to go through the same thing a couple of years ago with 2 little ones. There's is no easy answer and is just one of those things that we have to step up to. It did help to explain the circumstances which was a sudden illness in my case. They seemed to deal with a bit better being completely informed. Hope this helps!

    Sorry for your loss.

A good friend/coworker's family dog passed yesterday. It's tough.

I like the article @Sean266 posted.

It sounds like Raven was suffering, maybe explain Raven is in a better place now, free of pain.

Yes for sure! that's what I plan to do. my youngest will cry and be upset....but not as much as my oldest.

I believe she was and I'm glad she isn't any more. I would have helped pay for the vet bill if her dad would have said something before today when it was too late. I even offered before when my oldest said something to me the first time about it and he refused.:(

Well I hope it goes as well as it can. Grieving sucks, but it will be a life experience that will help them deal with grief in the future.

I’m dealing with the same issue. I just put down my 13 year old shepherd tonight. Her hips and knees were shot. Had to pick her up and put her on gurney to get her inside. My youngest daughter who is 2 loved playing with Sheba. Prolly tell her she was in pain and is in a better place.
Sorry about your dog, one of the hardest thing to do is saying goodbye to our four legged family members

Hi Angel, I am very sorry to hear your pup passed :(, As you know I just went thru this too. My daughter was there when Belle passed so it was not a surprise, however, I did talk to her about all of the fun and crazy stuff Belle did while we were out hunting. Anna was part of those adventures sometimes so she could relate. Anyway, as others have said here, shoot straight with her but then remind her of all of the fun times she had with the pup and the silly things she did sometimes and I promise she will laugh thru her tears :(

I'm so sorry for your loss. We just had a firefighter on our department loose his house and both dogs. I tried my damdest to revive them, but no dice. The best thing to do is just be honest with her. There is no easy way to tell anyone about death. I've been telling people about the passing of loved ones (both human and furry kind) for many years and it's never easy. Just tell her and be ready to support her. I've had people cry, yell, scream, get angry, and even a blank indifference. Don't force anything and don't try to fill the entire experience with conversation, sometimes it's better to just shut up and listen or hug or cry.

Thank you everyone. I decided to have her pup cremated for her. The place who is doing it for us also offers time to see her one last time to be able to say her goodbyes. My daughter really wants to do this and is worrying a letter to her pup that the furry baby funeral home will put in with her ashes. They will also be giving her a paw print plaque, a death certificate and a few other things too remeber her baby. They offer other services like a counselor for people who need a little more. They have been wonderful so far in all of this.
