Son is looking at new SR5 or TRD 4WD.

Seems that the TRD adds $2000 for Bilstein, different wheels, Some sheet mettle they call skid plates, some decals and trim.

Not too keen on Toyota mags/wheels. The skid plated is flimsy.

He really wants KO-2 tires on different aftermarket wheels, and can put Bilstein on himself <$400.

Question---- does the TRD add enough value in resale to validate the cost???

Keep in mind the TRD isn't a trim level. It's an sr5 with the TRD package. If he is doing his own setup, then no, it's not worth it.

I agree. One of the first things a lot of people do is level / raise the front end which is better accomplished with new shocks than with a urinal cake spacer on top of the coilovers. So why pay for the "better" shocks?

    Pretty much what @Metro14536 said....

The TRD model is just a trim option. If he intends on building it, the SR5 will do just fine over the TRD considering it's just badging, wheels and suspension. It does help resale, however, as long as he takes care of his truck the difference is not astronomical. If it were me buying a new truck, I would use that extra cash in one of two places - Aftermarket suspension, or upgrading the interior via packages offered by the dealer; most prominent would be the SR5 upgrade package at 1800$ - for this you get the bump in stereo, power bucket seats, auto dimming mirror, heated tow mirrors, integrated alarm and immobilizer, and a few more trinkets that would do me well in my locale.

The only other major thing is this - the two most sought after color options (cement and quicksand) are only available in the TRD Package. Something to think about on the resale level.

Not sure about tundras but the tacoma TRD's had different seats, more comfortable for sure.

That all depends on when you want to install new shocks. I don't plan on putting on KINGS for at least another year or so. So I don't want to have to deal with a crappy ride quality between that time which is why I went with the TRD package.

people who know nothing about coilovers and such do know about TRD though so if you sell it it's a good selling point to have TRD sticker on the bed.

Could you save the TRD markup price and put some 5100s temporarily and still save some cash? Mine is a TRD and I had 5100s for a few months to level it out 'til I installed ADS c/os.

I believe the sr5 comes with a bench seat with fold down center console unless you get the upgrade package. Whereas the trd have bucket seats. So what kinda seats do you want/need really.

My SR5 4x4 CM has the bucket seats with center console and DR seat is power! Did get the SR5 upgrade with the 38 gallon take and few other things, basically same as a TRD minus the lower end bilstein 4600 shocks and a fancy TRD sticker!

I put some Bilstein 6112/5160 so basically its a bit better then a TRD! and go, :crapstorm:

I hear you bro, I should of listened to many here and I would have went with the platinum as well! Actually still thinking of a future Platinum, I like the features and not having to change out the chrome bumper ends!

I was givin a price yesterday on a new 2017 super white 4x4 Platinum MSRP $51,400 down to $45,999, I only owe $20,000 on mine with 8000 miles, tempting but the 2018 has the LED fogs and headlights! But higher price then the 17!

Anyway we are ok and have awesome Tundra’s now!

If you don't like the wheels and will be replacing them anyway then the answer is no, not even close to worth it. When I was looking for mine, I wanted the TRD-OR package too (actually wanted the Pro but way out of my budget range) but anyway I started looking at exactly what came on the OR package and quickly realized it wasn't worth it because like your son, I plan to replace the wheel and tires, the Bilstein 4600's are nothing special and the so called skip plates are a joke.

Buy a standard SR5 with the upgrade package and that will get you the console/bucket seats. Buy whatever wheels\tires he likes, get some 5100's (or better) front and rear, TRD front skid plate and the TRD OR decal from ebay. it will be cheaper and better in the long run

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
    Simple and cheap solution:

Just go with an Sr5, with no TRD package. Use the savings to buy the following:
    Bilstein 5100 Shocks x4 $400
    BFG K02 $900
TRD Off-road stickers (These do help with resale significantly and most people will not verify anyway) $40
    RCI front Skid plate $260

Then you still have $400 left to contribute to new wheels...

    See fine print
If your looking at '16+ trucks. One option you may want is the TRD upgrade package. Gives you center console and 38 gallon tank. That's more important than the TRD package.

+1, upgrade pkg is way to go with SR5. At 10 mpg towing boat the 38 gallon tank is a must have. Main reason I sold Tacoma and bought Tundra. I hate having to stop and get gas coming home from lake. Also round trip to deer lease and not stop if I don't want to.

Where can I get the TRD off-road 4x4 sticker in just black for my white SR5 4x4, I thought about doing it if I trade or sell down the line for a Platinum!

@16tunterd did you have your 5100's on the middle setting? If so, what size tires can you get away with on the factory wheels?

You guys are confusing the TRD off-road package with the SR5 upgrade package. The center console, 38 gallon tank, and bucket seats come with the SR5 upgrade package. The TRD OR package is the shocks, sticker, wheels, and fake skid plates.

EDIT- forgot to add the 38 gallon tank

I had the 5100's at top setting and the truck sat fairly level. When I had 5100's I was still on stock tires so I'm afraid I can't help much. Since then everything about the suspension has changed.
