I tactically acquired mine:D I believe I have 4 now. can't ever have too many.
Quick clot gauze is better than the powder....at least in the battle field.
always have these on hand.....great for bloody noses and gun shot wounds
and these.....also great to soak up sweat not just blood.

I have a few other things too like the Israeli bandages. and you can't have too many Mickey Mouse & princess band aids (just ask my youngest).

I was just building my own as you replied. Both of the places you mentioned have some nice stuff for sure!

I think to get started I'm going to buy a pouch, toss in my SWAT-T, then buy quick clot, some bandages, dressings, gloves, then some boo boo stuff. One for each vehicle, one for the house.

As I do more research I may add more stuff like shears and med tape.

    Any tips?

I'm sure there are others here far more qualified but, add a SAM splint and Ace bandages. Twisting an ankle happens way too often. If you're out riding, broken ulnas and wrists can be highly likely. Piece it together to fit the situations you'll find yourself in. Toss in a wilderness med guide to cover yourself on things you don't know.

Damn, I didn't know they still made that. I don't see it around here anymore. I worked for Coke when Surge came out. We carried a few cases on our trucks to give as samples so customers would buy some.

Hey Kids, I've been noticing a few folks here picking up medical gear and to be honest, some of the stuff your getting is straight up garbage. As a FD paramedic of 21 years and a Tactical Medic of 15 years I've seen my share of equipment come and go. If you're going to be carrying equipment, get the best you can, but don't go overboard. Most of this stuff will be sitting in your bag for months or years then, when you need it you'll want it to work the first time, every time, not turn to dust in your hands!

First off let's go over tourniquets. The SWAT-T is a huge pile of crap. It is nothing more than a huge rubber band that quickly degrades and it absolutely cannot provide enough pressure to control major hemorrhage.....throw that thing in the trash or make a water balloon launcher out of it. The two best tourniquets out there are the N.A.R.P. - CAT (North American Rescue Products - Combat Application Tourniquet) and the SOFTT (Special Operation Forces Tactical Tourniquet) from Tactical Mededical Solutions. After playing and training with the CAT and the SOFTT tourniquets over many years, our team found that the big difference between the CAT and the SOFTT was that the CAT was easier to self-deploy when single looped through the buckle. The SOFTT has a tendency to slip and slide around your arm when self applying and requires that the operator pin the tourniquet against a solid object before cinching it down. Don't get me wrong, once in place, both tourniquets do a fantastic job at controlling bleeding, but all tourniquets absolutely, positively have to be cinched down as tight as possible prior to cranking on the windlass (that's the little stick thingy). When purchasing a tourniquet you need to be spending $25-35 dollars. There are a ton of cheap Chinese knock offs out there that are crap. The way to tell the difference is the price, E-Bay or Amazon for $12-15 or less and they don't have the GSA number on the tag. For the love of GOD......do not buy these things. They have been known to break during application.....and that's no beuno! As for the others out there; RATS Strap, EON Merch, etc., just remember this one thing.....Do you want to trust your life to these cheap knock offs? After applying a tourniquet you have approximately 6 hours to get the patient to surgery before permanent damage starts to occur. DO NOT rotate tourniquets, or loosen them for any reason what-so-ever. I've actually had nurses loose their minds and freak out when they saw a tourniquet on a patient. Lots of old school rumors flying around. Leave it in place and if you think of it....write the time of application either on the tag on the tourniquet or on the patients forehead, "TQ - 1615 hrs".

Now lets take a peek at bandages. Personally I prefer the Tactical Medical Solutions Olaes Modular Bandages (4", 6", and Blast Bandage). This is a pressure bandage that can control moderate bleeding. It can be used in conjunction with a tourniquet for major bleeding. The Olaes bandage is vacuum sealed and contains a pressure cup that can be removed and used to cover eye injuries, packing material for wound packing (if you're into that sort of thing), and a plastic sheet that can be used as an occlusive dressing. NARP also carries 4", 6", and abdominal bandages/dressings that are vacuum sealed, but they are bandages only! They sell wound packing and occlusive dressings separately. For those of you not in the know, an occlusive dressing is used to cover chest wounds to keep air from entering/escaping and open abdominal wounds to keep your guts from drying out. They also keep dirt and cooties out.

Speaking of occlusive dressings.....lets go over chest seals. A chest seal is used for holes in the chest.....duh!! We do not want air going into the chest through any other hole than the ones in your face. A hole in the chest can cause life threatening complications if not treated quickly, so if you see a hole in the chest/upper back, just slap a seal on it. Numerous after market seals are out there for your purchase. Some are good, some are garbage. One seal that was advertised as being the shizzz was the Asherman chest seal but it turned out to be terrible in the field. You had to have clean skin to obtain a seal, no dirt, no blood, no sweat. Yeah right!!! The Hyfin chest seal, Halo seal, SAM chest seal, and FOX seal are all good products. I carry the Halo chest seal. They don't dry out, there are two seals in the package, and they stick to everything! Why two chest seals you ask? Entry and exit wounds....always roll your patient over and check the back for the exit wound. In a pinch, you can use all kinds of things all around you for an occlusive dressing. The packaging from your bandages, zip-lock bags, gloves, bread bag.....anything that will not allow air to pass.

Finally....Clotting Agents. These things have come a looooong way since their inception back in the 90's. They started off as powders that blew away with the wind and burned the patient like pouring hot lava into them. Then came the "Tea Bags".....a mesh bag full of clotting agent, great idea, but hard to apply to smaller wounds. They also have this syringe with tiny little sponges in it, but I'm still not sold on that one for now. Finally came the impregnated gauze.....HALLELUJAH!!!! It's a long strip of gauze with a clotting agent impregnated in it. Again, there are numerous brands out there, but we've stuck with QuickClot from the beginning. They have cooled it down a little, but it still burns when applied. Celox and QuickClot are the two front runners in this market. In a nut shell, these products form a clot over the wound site, but you must get this product in contact with the source of the bleeding, you can't just lay it over the wound and hope it works. It needs to be stuffed into the wound. Quickclot can be purchased at most major pharmacy's and sporting goods stores or online. These products are used for major bleeding that cannot be fixed with a tourniquet, high up on the leg or arm, severe abdominal bleeding, and neck wounds. Do not place in the chest or in head wounds.

Other things to consider for your med bag....Nasal airways (NPA's), gloves, OTC meds (Ibuprofen, Naproxin/Aleve, Anti-Diarrhea meds, Benedryl tabs), regular band-aids, moist wipes/butt wipes, hand sanitizer, and maybe some peroxide. Just remember......the more shit in your bag, the bigger the mess. When the shit hits the fan, you don't need all that extra stuff to move out of the way to get to the things you need. Just keep it simple.

This is good. For the vehicle, if you're willing to extricate, add something to break glass in a hurry. Cheapest is probably a spark plug.

As painful as it can be, sometimes you need to take care of other vehicles besides the Tundra. New pads and rotors for all 4 corners of wifeys car.
