How 'bout, I'll increase the specificity of my previous offer of help. If you type up your best effort, listing your experience using military jargon or any language that's comfortable, and send it to me, I'll get with military guys I work with, and get them to help me "translate" it into Real World equivalents. Then I'll send it back to you, and you can move to the synthesis (whittling it down) stage.

Sounds like the jargon thing has become a roadblock for you. Maybe if you have some help getting past that, it'll feel less daunting. If not, no problem; you/ we can reassess and figure out how to do the next step. This way, all this good advice on this thread won't seem so general, as it probably does now, but you'll see it applied to your process as you create your resume step by step.

I may have missed it and it may have been mentioned already but:

I'm not sure about the US military, but my friends in the Canadian Forces have told me they have people that specialize in helping soldiers transition into civilian jobs. They're able to help someone who's been a door kicker since they were 18 polish up a resume that can get them into a management/tech position in the civilian world. It's not easy applying to a civilian job with a resume that goes something like "qualified on multiple small arms, licensed armoured vehicle operator, experience in killing bad guys". LOL

Perhaps there's a similar resource available to you?

I know that it is difficult to make each resume custom-fit the job, but make sure that you do not give the impression that your letter/resume is mass-produced to blanket the whole job market. You got to do some research on each job. Find out as much about each job/people and incorporate it into your application.

Good luck. As long as I've been working, resume/application aspect was not something I enjoyed.

Good luck with your search. I frequently have to update my resume, just in case a job with another code comes up I'm ready. Just remember you might get that old question, Why Should I Hire You. Be prepared to answer. Confidence Kills.

I'm pretty good there.....I get asked that for promotion boards. Though they haven't promoted me in the 6 years I've been promotable....but we won't get into that

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
I highly recommend this website for the building of your own Resume. It definitely helps with formatting. It is free if you are a 'student'. Just come up with a BS email address that ends in .edu. Example: TDavis@nwuniversity.edu

The site does not send a confirmation or anything, for verification.

Very helpful site. I usually end up downloading the 'finished product', then making a few minor modifications.

Also, this webiste automatically 'grades' your resume and gives you tips for improvement, for free.

    http://rezscore.com/

This website is great if you get 'worn out'/overwhelmed by the monotonous task of re-entering the same information over and over again. It has a legitimate 1-click apply option that has worked for me. You just have to be patient.
