Just finished up The Outpost. Man, that was a heavy hitter. Highly recommend. Insiders view of what I would consider one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan next to the Korengal.

Switching gears and started this the yesterday while in the hotel gym, Burke & Hare. True story about a couple of guys in Edinburgh in the early 1800s who became serial murderers that sold the bodies to an anatomist. My oldest brought the book back for me from Edinburgh when she was there over the summer. Looks like it'll be a pretty wild and crazy ride.

This is the genre that I enjoy reading. Jim Butcher, David Wellington, Larry Correia, J.L. Bourne, Barb & J.C. Hendee. I tried the Sandman Slim series and liked it at first. I got a few books in (don't remember how many, but there were more left) when I lost interest. It got a little........................ I don't even know, but something turned me off from starting the next book.

I've really enjoyed all of the Jack Reacher books. Lone Survivor and American Sniper really got to me too.

Been away on a hunting trip and consumed with the return to work the last few weeks, so apologies for the late replies here...

@zcarpenter92 - TWOM is indeed F'nA! I usually end up reading it about once a year, just cause. Did you get through BAB yet?

Just finished Becoming A Barbarian. Excellent read, and it really matches my beliefs as well. I'll be ordering A Sky Without Eagles on Monday, and I have the rest of his books in my list on Amazon to order after that.

Finished up Burke & Hare this week then got through Hotel Honolulu and The Quiet American.

Hotel Honolulu is from Paul Theroux. He mostly writes non-fiction travel work. He's crusty with a dry sense of humor. Witty but sly. I love his travel stuff but have begun to explore some of his fiction work. Of course, the standout is Mosquito Coast. Probably my favorite tale of blowing up life and running away. They made a movie of it awhile back with Harrison Ford. Worth a watch. Hotel Honolulu is fiction but he completely nails life in Hawaii. Great characters with his signature dry humor and sarcasm.

The Quiet American is Graham Greene. This is one of those must reads like work from Faulkner, Burroughs, Bowles and a few others. Work that defines a generation. It's the tale of young, patriotic OSS agent in the very early days of the Vietnam War. Greene was English and his views on politics and Americans abroad are just below the surface of his writing. What I've seen traveling over the years, kinda lines up.

On the flight home, I started In the Service of the Sultan. It's a first hand account from a Royal Marine of the war in Oman during the late 60's and early 70's. Bourdain's Parts Unknown did a show on Oman and he spent a large of the show with Ian Gardiner, the marine who wrote the book. Took awhile to find it but Amazon finally delivered it after a month or so.

I'm finding myself drawn to books of war lately. Those written by the warriors themselves and those written by the journalists who covered it. The perspectives, especially if they are from the same conflict, are fascinating and thought provoking.

    I love Mosquito Coast.

I haven't delved into this books thread, but mean to.

While you're in a war phase, if you haven't yet read We Were Soldiers Once... And Young by Moore (military leader) and Galloway (embedded journalist) and All Quiet On the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, both are excellent. The first for the tactics and reality, the second for the personal revelations (caveat: the author didn't participate, so...). Another not actually about war, but a beautiful book with some deep concept thinking written into some comfortable biographical fiction is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. I suggest it here because there is a significant military connection for the main character.

Also, in high school I read LettersHome from Viet Nam, and it had a profound effect on me. It's not polished, and isn't to do with tactics or politics, but, because they're real letters from guys in country, informative about actual experiences, and heart-wrenching.

Excuse me if you've already read these.

Great thread. I’m a big fan of military history, particularly Civil War era and WW2. The Battle of Antietam and Killer Angels are two of my favorites.

That said, I’m almost thru an early book written by Ken Follett, Pillars of the Earth. It’s a historical fiction that takes place in the 12th century in England.

Just picked up Enemy of The State by Vince Flynn. Not sure what number it is in the Mitch Rapp series, it’s a great book so far.

I have 4 books on the go right now. Yes, I have a condition. No, I won't accept treatment. LOL

The Intelligent Investor - Benjamin Graham: Pretty self explanatory.

Guns, Germs and Steel - Jared Diamond: This book examines the course of various regions during human history and the reasons why some developed advanced technologies and others didn't. For example, how is it that white man came to North America in sailing ships and carrying guns while the native indians hadn't even figured out the wheel.

Monty Python Speaks: Basically the group autobiography of Monty Python, how they met, how they got started with Python and their inspirations etc

Ghost Force - Patrick Robinson: An easy reading military thriller novel by an excellent author. Argentina attempts to retake the Falklands backed by the Russians in order to commandeer the newly discovered oil riches. Naturally, the good ol' USA is on the case and won't stand for it, quickly coming to the aid of the beleaguered and ill prepared British by sending in everyone's favorite bad asses, the SEALs.

i usually have multiples going as well. you're in good company.

intelligent investor is a great read and still applicable given it's age. i don't know a lot of people who have read it.

after guns, germs and steel, you should read collapse. he takes a look at past societies that have fallen and disappeared then applies it to modern times.

Just started IQ84 by Haruki Murakami. Have always been drawn to all the things Japanese and this book has been on my stack for awhile. Japan is in the top 3 of my list of places that I could ex-pat to. Some day I’ll get to go and experience everything without my nose being buried in a book.

Yes it does. What you've been going through is the worst and most compelling kind of drama. Looking forward to a good ending, and a sequel.

Have had this book on my shelf for some time, but only just around to starting it:

I’m only at the end of the first chapter, but it’s captured my attention. Especially to things that should be obvious.

Lots of flight and hotel time the past few weeks means lots of reading.

Wrapped 1Q84 on last week’s trip to Bentonville. Good stuff. Very Japanese. Story took a little bit to get rolling but once it did, it was quite the ride. Need to check out some more of Murakami’s work.

Started ‘Astrophysics For People in a Hurry’ over the weekend but left it at the house. Going to be a good read.

In the bag for this week’s trip is ‘If I Die in a Combat Zone’, ‘Braving It’ and ‘The River of Lost Footsteps’. Will probably finish If I Die on my outbound flight. Going to be a short intense read.

Finished a bunch the last couple of weeks.

If I Die was one of the best non-fiction views of the Vietnam War that I've read. Highly recommend.

If you have daughters and enjoy the outdoors, go read Braving It. Great father/daughter adventure story into the wilds of Alaska. Makes me wish for some significant life changes.

River of Lost Footsteps was a great history of Burma. I had had a friend in college who was a member of the student guerrillas during the uprisings in the 80's fighting the dictatorship. This added a new twist on his stories and filled in some blanks.

Currently working on Dying for the Truth and Tyson's Astrophysics.

My to-read stack is now empty. Not sure what I'm going to do next. Might jump back into some Burroughs/Bowles/Faulkner.
