I am single, live alone. By family I have 2 brothers and nieces and nephews, who adore and worship the ground I walk on since I am the bad ass uncle who lives in the country, drives a truck and always has a gun on him, like the cowboys, LOL. I also shoot and blow stuff up with this stuff they call boom stuff, tannerite. Well except one nephew who is not allowed to hang out with me alone since he has ADD and cerebral palsey and becomes highly attentive to the shit I do and wants to emulate everything, I mean everything. LOL younger brother said NO no more hanging out with you, it took a month to get him to stop yelling out Hello hot stuff, to women in public after hearing me make a comment while driving one day LOL
    Ahhhhhhh yes fun times

2008-2013 I worked 50-70 hours per week. Some weekends, some holidays, I worked in the equipment rental industry. Money was great, but my free time was constantly interrupted. It was hard to plan weekend trips or even nights out. I had a garage full of toys, a nice house, and good money going into savings because I didn't even know what to spend it on.

2013-Present I took a job for the federal government. Started out at just about the same hourly rate that I left my previous job, but no overtime. Worked 40 hours per week, no more, no less. Monday-Friday. Monthly take home dropped about $500-$800 because of the lack of OT.

This change was the best thing that ever happened to my family and I. I have more free time, more time to spend with my Wife and Friends. I now have an 11 month old daughter as well, now I get to play with her until she gets tired of playing with me. The money was never missed. We made other changes to save some money, downsized our house a bit when we moved and dropped cable/satellite entirely.

4 years later and I couldn't imagine working OT or weekends ever again. Free time and a regular schedule are the most valuable thing to me. We're only alive for a short time, spend it doing what you love.

Its all about the schedule!!! Worth the minor loss in pay. I lost my differential to go from 3rd shift to 1st (about $8k depending on OT), and like @Pudge said, you wont miss it one bit once you get into a normal sleep/family routine. I would give anything to find a job in the fire service with a 24on 72off schedule right now.

Best of luck with your decision @RLHOK ...quality of life is worth a few bucks less in pay IMO.

Make yourself happy. Look at it this way, a steady shift give you more time to shoot, set off tannerite, and have fun with the nieces and nephews.

For what it's worth, I think you are making the right decision. You can always make more money, but you cannot get lost time back. I bet you'll never say "man, I wish I were at work right now instead of blowing stuff up"

    Good luck man!

I'm impressed and floored at how easy you guys make this sound. Like it's just a switch you flip.

@RLHOK stoked for you and your decision. Hope it all works out.

    Update:

I received a text Wednesday evening asking for a letter stating why I wanted to step down and what I would bring to the other department.
Email was sent out this morning and this afternoon the move was approved. I was told I have the full support of the district team on the move.
Don't have a confirmed date but I believe its the 9th of October if not sooner.
