I'm looking into doing a backup camera anytime mod, and I saw this comment on a youtube video. Can we really shift into reverse while driving in order to activate rear view camera? And no I'm not willing to try it to find out lol

    DaRooster30001 year ago
+Daniel Thompson no, in the factory configuration you can put the trans into reverse while driving in order to view the rear cam image, ex: checking trailer hitch while driving. It also turns on the reverse lights so if you have someone following too close or bright lighting you, you can hopefully get them to back off or cut their high beams off. It will not cause excess voltage, this mod just allows you to turn on the camera without being in reverse. Toyota inteded this option to be used as a safety feature.

Yes, but only above a certain speed... I think it's like 35 mph or so. If you do it under that speed... :(

I know you can do this on 3rd gen Tacomas. I think you have to be going over 35mph. Probably the same for tundras? :notsure:

I doubt Toyota did it on purpose. I'm pretty sure it was just a safeguard to not let the transmission go into Reverse while you're driving forward. And the camera automatically turns on when the lever goes into Reverse. They had no intention of this happening. o_O

I don't suppose anyone knows if there is anything in a manual about this? Service manual, bulletin, drivers manual, anything? I would feel much better trying it on my new truck.

I mean in theory it makes sense. Why wouldn't there be a fail safe in the system especially there days. I mean they make driverless cars. Still afraid to try it though.

So I tested it out today when I was coming home from the dealer. It does work. I was at 40mph and put into R. The camera came on about 2-3 seconds after shifting to R.
No issues or weird groans from the Tundra.

What if the shifter gets bumped into sequential shift while driving at highway speeds? I had that happen and didnt even notice until i exited the highway and was sitting at a stop light. So now what i did was put a little block of wood so it cant get bumped over.

No issues with that. You can go from D to sequential whenever you want

    .
Amazing how BS like this spreads.
Activating the back up cam is most definitely NOT the purpose it was intended for.
The transmission is electronically shifted. Moving the shift lever does nothing more than send a signal to the ECM.
The purpose of not being able to shift into reverse while moving forward at XX mph is 1) to protect the transmission and driveline (duh), and 2) everyone's safety so not to cause an accident.
