I got code 0442 small evaporated system leak. Emission.

Time for little story. Down the road from house is a some little trails. It was a nice sunny cool day out. I know at a a certain point in the trails is a nice creek and rocks that was going to make for an awesome place for some photos. Well my normal entrance to the trails have been blocked off so i took an alternative route. Long story short I got ballsy and nosed down in to another little creek bed with a big opening and drop on the passenger side. Well I didn't get far enough over and dropped driver front into the creek and hung up on my passenger nerf bar STUCK. Now there is no water in the creek but I am face down ass right up right now. Now here is the bad part I only have 1/8 tank of fuel. Because my angle the fuel light came on and I ran out of fuel. Now my buddy pulled me out leveled out the fuel, got off the trails, got fuel and went home. 5 miles down the road from fueling. So I've been doing some reading and it sounds like not putting the cap on right or the seals wearing out can cause this code.

My question is. Can running out of fuel cause the code?
The code only came on next time I got in my truck AFTER fueling.
60 is about the average miles to drive to clear a code right. I can clear it myself but I want to fix it and let it clear itself.

I also was reminded that our 4x4 front axles are not locking lol. Since my front passenger tire was freely suspended the drive front had no power lol.

I had the small evaporative leak on my 4r.. I got lucky and a new gas cap from Amazon solved the problem for $20.

My 4r is an 04.. Yours is about the right age for needing one?

Yeah I can clear it with my scanner. I think I might just clear it. Would rather let the code clear itself though.

Well I cleared it with the code reader. Gotten fuel twice and no code so I guess it was just a loose fuel cap? Well see if it pops up again later

it can take up to 2 weeks to trigger... if you have the code reader, look to see if you have emissions "pending" or whether they are "complete"? You have to drive a variety of conditions for a certain amount of time for all the checks to run. If all of the evaporative checks are complete, you're probably good. FWIW, when i had mine, I'd clear it, it would come up clear & complete but several weeks later it would trip again. Amazon gas cap solved my problem - hasn't come back since i swapped that out.

    This is good reading... https://www.smogtips.com/smog-question/2664/Toyota-4Runner-Drive-Cycle-to-Set-Emission-Monitors

Thank you sir. I didn't think about that. I'll have to run the scan again and see about the emissions scan complete. I didn't think about it. I just cleared it and went on my way. Appreciate the info.
