HELP!!! There is paint all over my truck!

Today at work, my truck got oversprayed with aircraft paint. Some contracters were painting an aircraft about 125 yards from my truck. The entire truck looks like this. Truck, camper, rims and steps. I washed a door to see what would come off... nothing. It won't come off with a fingernail... my truck has been painted. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I want to try to fix it before I file a claim against the contractors. Also if I have to get it repainted, does the truck depreciate since it won't have the original paint job?

 

you won't have to repaint.... but yes, that would depreciate the value.... it should come out with a polisher

try nail polish remover /acetone in a small hidden section first.
should take out that top layer without touching the factory paint.

then wash/wax.

 

White paint chicken pox disease nasty... If left untreated it could could turn into an ice cream white truck, have it removed immediately and professionally hopefully your Tundra will turn Silver Sky! Keep us posted! You will have arms like Popeye trying to remove it by hand, spend the rusty $$$. Just a little levity bro, I hope you get it removed.

 

Either file that claim and let a good detailer do the job
Or get a gallon of ENAMEL reducer for a paint store. Not urathane reducer
I use it all the time to get road line paint off my customers cars. It should take it off

 

That really sucks, I seriously hope you get it worked out with them. It seems that they should have taken precautions to prevent this or had everyone move away from the area.. If they didn't do their due diligence in clearing the area and you were legally parked they are absolutely liable.

Hope you get it fixed.

 

Whatever you do, do not allow these "painters" to fix it themselves either.

Were there other vehicles affected?

 

File a claim with the contractor first and as others said have a professional detail company correct the issue. If it was paint for an aircraft its probably some pretty serious stuff which is going to take time to remove. Hopefully you had a good coat of wax on the truck.

 

Thanks everybody for the advice. I definitely plan on having this fixed by a professional. I am handy with a sponge and a bucket. Anything beyond that is outside of my skill set. A little background on this. The paint crew blocked off the parking lot near where they were working and they didn't tell us not to park where I was parked. I saw at least 5 cars with overspray but my supervisor called me later and said he had paint on his car and he was about 20 spot further down. Hopefully my squadron will address it with the contractors and we don't all have to file claims. I am going to readdress this with them (Squadron leadership) in the morning to see what can be done before filing an individual claim.

Try one little section get rubbing alcohol 91 Grain..

 

If it's a water-based paint you can use rubbing alcohol get a rag that has a little bit of texture to it and try one little section ..

 

And if you get your in truck repainted it will depreciate the value .

 

I'm with everyone else on this one. File a claim and have it done professionally.

I had a '70 Chevelle show car in high school (Dad's owned mechanic shop, Uncle owned a body shop) and some city workers did the same thing to me with over-spray when they were painting traffic light poles on a windy day.

I had wet sanded that whole car down to 2000 grit on the color coat and then again on the clear coat. I wanted a unique color so I used a lot of light blue pearl in the clear so it would have better contour definition in the sunlight. It took FOREVER, but it looked awesome! None of that 50/50 junk (looks good 50 feet away going 50 mph) you see on most old cars.

That self-etching enamel paint they used destroyed the clear coat since it etched into the paint rather than just sitting on top.

I didn't want to just sand the over-spray off and reapply clear coat because I lost my notes on how much pearl was in the original clear coat. A new coat of clear would either have more or less pearl and it would change the color of the car which was just how I wanted it already.

To try and avoid changing the color I had to use some heavy-cut buffing compound....then medium-cut.....then light-cut....then finally mirror glaze to get the over-spray off, but it never looked the same.

You won't have to worry about issues with potentially altering the color if a few new coats of clear are needed (unlikely, but possible if buffing burns through the clear) after the over-spray is gone, but you deserve to be made whole.

If you try to buff it yourself and burn through the clear to the color you'll have to have new clear sprayed on that pannel. It won't be cheap and the painters will likely claim that they "aren't responsible for the additional damages you caused" trying to fix it yourself (because you're a good guy and you didn't want to bother them with it if you didn't have to.) They may also claim it didn't happen unless you formally file a damage claim before you do anything beyond washing the truck.

At the end of the day we are all responsible for the impact our decisions have on other people. They decided to paint outdoors on a windy day with no enclosure. Hopefully a quick buff at the body shop and everything is like new, but if not they are responsible for making it right.

Get your auto insurance involved if you have to. They should be bonded and insured just for occasions like this.

 

+1 on professionally. I had a 1987 F150 that had been recently stripped and repainted by Ford. Wife happened to drive it to work on a day when they were painting the day care she worked at. White over spray all over my truck. She raised cain with the painters and they hired professionals to remove the paint. Not as bad as the OPs but close.

 

clay bar should remove most. Polishing will remove the rest. Shouldn't set/cure on top of clear coat.

 

Update: The Pros were able to get all of the overspray off of the paint itself. All of the plastic (trim, mirrors, bumper parts, etc), my steps and my rims couldn’t have all of the paint removed. We are now working a claim with the guy’s insurance. Thanks for all of the inputs.

 

Glad your chain of command is helping you with it. Trying to navigate through the red tape that is the military/DOD contractors can be next to impossible.
