So, I hit a fucking deer Thursday night. :itllbuffout: I have 321 miles on the truck. Obviously I'm pissed, buuuut, now I get to spend more time looking at wheels and tires.IMG_2205.jpg

So that being said, I've got the following dilemma.

I am pretty much set on these wheels. https://www.4wheelparts.com/Wheels/...=11&t_s=535&t_pt=101508&t_pn=W/PMO97089086918

Buuuut, I'm torn on tires. I'm planning on putting Bilstein 5100's up front and raising the front around 1 3/4"-2" to level it out, and leave the back alone...This is another dilemma in itself as I may have a hookup on Fox shocks..

I would like to run a 275/70-18. And I'm torn between Nitto Grappler G2's and Cooper Discover AT Maxx. I do mostly highway driving, I ride dirt bikes and end up on gravel and dirt roads fairly frequently, aaaand I live in snow country and I'm NOT going to be purchasing studs.

Next issue is that each of those tires, according to the interwebz do not fit on 9" wheels. G2's list 8.5" and the ST Maxx list 8". Does anybody have experience putting these size tires on a 9" wheel?

Because of the issue above, I am debating on going to a 295/70-18, which will mount happily on a 9" wheel, but I'm not sure I want that large due to gas mileage, and possible rubbing. Although I believe I should clear with some plastic movement/trimming/mudflap removal.

Anybody have any input or experience with the novel above? :help:

THAT SUCKS Man. I can't help you on the tires, but I did the Bilstein leveling with 61's up front and freaking love it.
Good luck on the tire decision!

Sucks about the deer, sorry to see! Hope you get it fixed soon!

I too ran into the wheel width issue with that size. I found an 8.5" I liked after originally picking a 9". I ordered from Tirerack, and they recommended for any future warranty issues I stayed in the recommended range if the tire happened to wear funny etc.

Having said that, I LOVE my 275/70/18's. Fit no problem, no rub issues even on stock height lock to lock (seems this is about as big as you can go without any trimming from looking at mine installed). I too wanted to keep the size/width manageable for mileage purposes.

Where did you happen to find the 8.5" rim? I'm really in love with these wheels is the only issue, and I haven't really seen anything else that really stood out to me sadly.

Throw up a pic of your setup if you would! I may be tempted to just run that size without even leveling. How's your highway fuel mileage? Besides depressing, that is.

Wheels are very personal ha! I'm older and boring, so was flexible.. :) But, was happy with the result and love the taller tire (33") as well as the lighter aluminum wheel to help offset the heavier tire.

I'm sure if I stick around this place long enough I'll be lifting and bumping up to 35's when these wear out ha, but as a daily driver/work truck trying to at least start way cooler than stock but still sensible......

Best of luck in your search!!

That's a nice looking rig man! That's about the look I'm going for.

    How's your highway gas mileage?

Ok question, what do you mean discoverer A/T maxxx? Those don't exist... the ST maxx, or the AT3

Now sorry to seem like an ass but let me throw a little more options at you, you can get a good year duratrec ( I ran them in my 4runner and loved them) in a 295 65r18 which is the same height as the 265 70r18 you were looking at, just wider. d3104c8ae105344cb1fc95ea3cd98358_7824bb5e7ed820f9432467aa9c8a397c8a134a4c.jpg5c231ca649cbac911e077ba47d1f4f50_02e8640ea7c3a189994abea5c3667f41f48bd33c.jpg

Correct, I was meaning the ST Maxx. I've been looking at so many damn tires it's absurd.

While I have seen the duratracs and like them, and the reviews seem solid. From what I've seen, I think I'm going to steer away from a 295/65-18, simply due to their painful price tag and number of options in that size.

Similarly, a 295/70-18 in the ST Maxx is running $259 from Discount Tire Direct, rebates not included. Pluuus, after seeing @be77solo truck above, I believe I may want a slightly larger tire if I'm going to be going up in front, and I think the 295/70-18 may be just what I'm looking for.

However, I do appreciate the helpful suggestion!

No I totally agree on the odd tire size crap. I ran a 255 75 16 pita to find...

I believe BFG is still making a 31x10.5. Looks like you've still got a hell of a lot more options than a 295/65 for me :(

Ahh, how I miss the days of my old '96 Tacoma with standard sizing. Still miss those 32x11.5-15 KO's I had. They looked great.

I ran 275/65/18 (Stock TRD Off-Road tires) on 18x9, 18 mm offset wheels for a quite a while before upsizing the tires. No issues. I know many Tundra people run 275/70/18 on 9 inch wide wheels, but I have not heard of a single issue running these tires on 9 inch wide wheels.

If you drive in snow, I would highly recommend DuraTrac. We have Nissan 4x2 full size van and my wife was afraid to drive in snow with stock tires. We changed the tires to DuraTrac and the darn thing drives better than my Tundra in snow. Also it's relatively lighter than other tires so mpg hit will not be as severe.

If you go with 295/70/18, on your wheels (same spec as mine), there is a possibility that you may have to chop the body mount. My tires are a few mm away from the body mount (no rubbing though). Mud flaps will probably have to come off and wheel well liners will have to pushed forward (and I have 3.5 inch lift). You will probably have to get more lift than Bilstein 5100 provides, which means you will most likely get a set of UCAs as well.

If I were you, I would just go with 275/70/18 DuraTrac and call it a day. I think that size looks sweet on the stock set-up or on Bilstein 5100s.

I personally can’t wait to wear out these Generals and go back to BF Goodrich AT. I got 80k on my last set on my 1996 Land Cruiser.
