Looking at new tundras, but not many have the factory installed navigation.Could this be swapped out on a new truck at the dealer?I might want to negotiate this into a deal and what should this upgrade cost?

Go aftermarket headunit. Factory navigation units are not updated like the aftermarket ones. The best imo is the stand alone ones like from garmin. Its updated about every 3 months like mine the updates are free.

Toyota factory nav is actually one of the better factory systems out there. That said, an aftermarket head unit is almost always going to be superior, in terms of features and update frequency (as Mike mentioned). The newer Pioneer systems, are pretty good. Particularly the NEX with CarPlay. One caveat r.e. CarPlay. Don't expect Apple Maps to substitute for a dedicated nav feature. Apple Maps is just not very good. The NEX8000, has a good built in nav system AND CarPlay.

You could instead, opt for a stand-alone nav device, but that always felt "tacked on" to me, whereas a HU with built-in nav looks much more integrated.

This has me thinking. I am ordering a 2016 Tundra and can still change some things. I am thinking i do want navagation and the factory premium with nav is about $600. Here is why...my wife is terrible at reading maps and i do the driving. So we have gotten into fights before on vacation and if this navagation prevents one silly fight then it is worth every penny. So you guys are saying that in 1 year, 2 years and 5 years this Toyota navagion is not even going to be updated? So it is stupid to order the factory navagation?

I dont even know how these things work. Is the truck with factory navigation connected to the internet? Why do they not update?

Toyota does a very poorly on the navigation system. Like I moms 4runner hers is a 09 and to be honest the update is not worth the update. Last time it was updated I think was 2011 and its 2015 right?
Imo like I said im my first post aftermarket or standalone is your best choice here.

Can you still use the steering wheel controls with the aftermarket head units?

Yes most head units use a adapter so you can convert from factory to aftermarket.

Check with the hu you plan on purchasing that it does have a input for steering wheel. After that get the adapter and your golden.

The factory option is going to be cheaper than after-market, and honestly, I would go with the factory option. I paid more than twice for my Pioneer (including installation).

Unless you live in areas where construction boom is taking place, updates are not that critical, imo. My wife's Sienna navigation (factory) hasn't been updated since she bought her Sienna and my Pioneer navigation hasn't been updated since I installed it and we haven't run into issues yet. Oh, I forgot, there is one little intersection near my place they turned into a circular one which doesn't show on the navigation. Not a big deal, really.

If you need updates, my understanding is you could purchase the update disk. I have no idea how often they come out. I have no plan to purchase one myself.
