What do you all do to prevent your hitch from rusting? It's bound to happen, anything to slow it down? Or just file/sand and rustoleum the heck out of it ever year?

I've used Ospho. It didn't have any effect.

I've applied Rust Bullet. It started flaking in under a year and got it all over me in the process.

Use the hitch once a year? You'll have bare metal ripe for rust.

I'm not a fan of rustoleum anything, so I would just prep, mask off and light Krylon coats once a year if it bugs you.

They make a frame paint called POR which I've heard good things about in the Jeep world. Jeep owners might not be quite as discerning as Tundra owners though, lol. I used to be a Jeep nut so I'm one of those people.
Good powdercoat might do the job also.

Are you talking about the receiver on your truck? or the hitch and/or ball?

POR15 is a great solution and a basic kit can be had on Amazon for about $25. Clean up the rust scale, apply the POR15 and then overcoat with something like 3M 08881 or Eastwood chassis black and your rust problems will be gone.

Don't listen to these jokesters. You just need to do a few things:

    1) Take more vacations
    2) Use truck on said more vacations towing toys.

See, your hitch will always be shiny.

Solving problems one post at a time.

Yeah, POR15 is some good stuff, just like the other good men stated in this thread.

Kind of hard to keep it spotless since the hitch will rub inside the receiver. You can try a thin coating of grease to prevent rust. Paint will most likely just be rubbed off by the hitch.

It's inevitable. I know. It's a new truck, I Am just trying to slow it down - so it looks pretty as long as possible.

Fluid Film - Apply once or twice a year. Spray it over all your metal surfaces underneath the truck. EXCELLENT product.

Yes, I spay it over all the metal parts both spring and fall, keeps everything nice and protected especially if you live in a cold weather state like I do (Utah). It is a lanolin based product so it will not effect wiring, rubber hoses and gaskets, sensors, etc. although I try to just keep it on the metal.

Not the prettiest solution but I hot dip galvanized every draw bar I owned when I was in that business years ago. No rust except the stains transferred from the inside of the receiver.
