    FYI; For those of you who bought a McGard Lock; the lock key is unique to your lock (as it should be). You mail in sticker "a" with unique lock code to register and retain sticker "b" to order replacement key if lost. Sticker "c" is to hang on to for safe keeping.:thumbsup:

    :goingcrazy:I checked Denver Craig's this morning. Did the search again for "tundra tailgates" . ZERO, nada, nil, none. Last Friday there were several. Hmmmmmmm???? Maybe the news got out and maybe Craig's is not a good place to sell stolen tailgates anymore.

    I have been following this thread and I am flabbergasted at the whole tailgate dilemma. I guess I don't really think of that happening, especially when you live in a nice area. I guess I need to make a purchase to lock it down. Mcgard lock the best way to go?

    Seems to be the most popular one. Masterlock makes one I believe. I posted a video that shows someone driving onto a dealers lot and swiping one in broad daylight. It's only a potential problem if you don't lock your tailgate or leave it down. Hose clamp slows em down too. Locks are around $25. Cheap compared to the alternative scenario. Thieves like to hit the nice areas. That's where the nice stuff is. heh heh

    Matt is fine. I was first made aware of this on Tacoma World. Great Site too. The news report made it clear that there is a problem. Easy fix.

    I know you weren't. Pickings are easier in some areas. Neighborhood watch is pretty effective if your in a nicer area that isn't patrolled often. Seems like a lot of the thefts are occurring when vehicles are left alone unattended at work sites and parking lots. Depends a lot where you live. I had two cars stolen in Woodland Hills,Ca and both were inside gated parking and very nice area too. I had friend who lived in Simi Valley, over the hill so to speak, and was very nice too. Much safer. Simi has a lot of LEO's that live there and work in LA. Less crime when your neighbors are LAPD.

    Simi was a very nice area, still had crime tho not near as bad as San Fernando Valley. Lot of LEO's in Simi as you know.

    I remember Simi having the skinhead punk problems mostly. Not much other gang crap.
    I lived in Drain,Ore from fourth grade thru high school. 2K people then. Logging town, plywood, saw mills. Everybody knew everybody. Went to high school with both town cops another became a trooper, and two other became sheriffs. We all were pretty much armed too. I alway had a rifle in my trucks gun rack. Big difference. Same in AK. Good chance of getting shot. Better than good.

    Changing gears, but two years ago my dogs woke us up growling at the door at around 0140 hours. My wife was already awake breast feeding our youngest and she said someone is at the front door attempting to gain entry into our residence...
    I had her stay upstairs, and I removed one of the firearms and glanced over our 2nd floor loft in attempt to locate any persons / vehicles in our front yard area- no luck.
    As I looked down at the front door from the loft, I was able to see the front door knob moving and someone quietly attempting to gain entry (trespass)

    I knew our alarm system was still armed and active.
    I slowly made my way downstairs with a firearm drawn. My dogs were now on the couch starring at the front door, but has since stopped growling...
    With my back to the wall I looked into the peep hole and could only ovserve a shadow that appeared to be hunched over. (my front porch light has literally burnt out the night before and I told myself to do it, but it was too cold and snowy at the time)

    I kept my firearm pointed at the door while I grabbed a phone to call 911 to report an attempted trespass in progress and that I was armed.

    Shortly after, PD arrived with an authoritative voice announcing their presence...the voice then turned calm and soothing like.

    Turns out the guy had Alzheimer's and would leave his group home whenever it snowed for some reason. The responding officer advised this wasn't the first time he contacted him. I told the officer the elderly gentleman was lucky my wife and I had dicussed / trained for this exact scenario and I wasn't trigger happy....

    Point being- good things can happen to anyone, anywhere. The locks on the tail-gates just keep those who are honest, honest.

    Being trigger happy usually has a bad ending. For everybody. I see you didn't follow Uncle Joe Biden's advice and just fire a couple 12 gauge 00 buckshot rounds through the door to "scare them off".

    No, but if it were my neighbor he would have in a second. I wanted to be recorded and advise the subject once / if he gains entry to stop or ill presume he's here to hurt / assault my wife and children and he will be shot (dogs probably would have latched on by then...I presume they stopped growling b/c they knew he wasn't a legit threat? Our youngest dog will bark at anyone she can see and barks was an aggressive tone like she wants to get to their throat)

    More individuals need to practice that same scenario as you did so you know what to do when it happens. You've seen where someone has mistakenly shot a relative , kid sneaking in, etc. Like they say, "you point a gun, you better be ready to use it". (Wisely)

    I've noticed that some vehicles have their VIN on some of the other larger components, anyone notice this with the Tundra (tailgate)?

    Unless the VIN was removed (suspicious), if a person were to find their (missing) tailgate on CL and went to meet the seller (bring a friend), I'd think that it'd be pretty obvious who the culprit likely is if the VIN on the tailgate matches your vehicle. There'd be some details to work out, naturally.

    To even secure the McGard better you could squirt in some caulking sealant to make it so that if they had a key they would not be able to use it.

    Kind of what i did to secure my custom wood bench seat that i bolted down to my front porch. I used a plate bolted to the bottom of the legs and anchored it down to the concrete with security screws and i filled the screw heads with super glue.

    After i had the tailgate stolen off my 99 GMC, i found a replacement and this time i removed and reversed the hinges. It was a lot of work and took some grinding and the bumper also needed removed. So it would take a lot of work for thieves to seal it.

    You do realize each McGard key is slightly different, that's why you need the key code/receipt/registration to get a replacement.
