Well this is my rig in the picture, how someone found that? At any rate run English pointers for our Arizona birds with occasional out of state trips for pheasant and Huns. This is my second purpose build Tundra dog hauler and I could not be happier. Built this one exact based on past experience. Love the decked system for storage and elevated kennels. Caries plenty of water with the rotopax system and pleanty of exterior lighting for those early mornings and late nights. John at hunter off road did a fantastic job on the rack, protects the dogs and provides extra storage. It's built to get off road, get to the birds and beat the heat for the dogs. I'll get some new pictures up, several improvements since that picture. It was also featured in a Toyota produced you tube advertisement.

Well they all shed :) I got a robot vacuum that runs twice a day and that's made my wife a lot happier :)

For quality breeders, anything from Steve Brodeur - http://www.griffonduchasseur.com/index.php?lang=en-GB&Itemid=181

My female was from a breeding with one of his males.

Griffs tend to work a little closer than GSP's. They were bred to hunt under foot. They have a good thick coat for briars and cold water and are thick in the body. At almost 10 months my female is about 55 lbs, she has a brother that's 70 lbs.

I'm not expecting a lot from her this first hunting season. The local NAVHDA groups (we actually have 3 in Maine) have been great to work with and we've learned a lot. You don't have to train for testing with the group if you just want a hunter, but the knowledge I've gained has been super helpful. I'm doing testing mostly for the purposes of breeding. This female really is exceptional and I'd like to breed her a couple times.

Your Tundra build looks pretty awesome. I've got an ARE Z-Series cap on the way and started building my bed drawers last night. Hopefully I'll be all setup in a couple weeks. I've got to find a good gas can solution though that still allows me to tow my trailer... although I might get something fabbed up for the trailer.

My father-in-law has two Griff's and I can also say they do hunt pretty close to you. Not sure if that's a breed specific trait or training, but it works well nonetheless. They have never been TOO close, so much that the quail flush before the dog points and I have a chance to get ready. They do lose hair, but it's not like their whole coat is new every month. You don't have hair all over your clothes/couch/etc. We just Swiffer once every 3-4 weeks and that handles it.

I got mine from Flatbrook Kennels in Valley Center, CA. Dick Burns is a great guy and cares a ton about the breed and his line of work.

Is that a mearns, scaled and gambels?

Here's one of my better hunts in Eastern Washington. The 2 pheasants dropped on day one and the 2 huns and 5 quail dropped on day two.

I was 7 for 7 that day. I never came close to shooting that way before and I've never done it since. To top it off I was by myself so none of my buddies believe it. Oh well. I guess it's a memory for just me and the dog.1523e08eba068e547092b9a37ac8d391_8feabdd3680efdc10ae25794cc56186c984108dd.jpg4d5250932283febd5a485ee86c024484_bbe0303070181dc8d9379a1535aa1d9fea92c189.jpg9cfbfa978a9163d13bd050829249bb29_6db867d42ccfdd68bf3376a02f9ce5d4a3d1c0c1.jpg586117dc0c3b3e658583c57f6ad78691_7cc7e7cc7a1644a683b9c124a28a9d97df912fb8.jpg

My lab is never underfoot unless he's worn out, but I'd like something with a little more range and stamina.

How close is pretty close? Like flusher close or 50 yards? How many full days can you get out of them before they hang-it-up? (Assuming proper foot care and rest in the evening of course.)

50 yards for sure. I'll put it this way - I just bought an ecollar for my girl and was noticing some come with gps locators for your pointer. You wouldn't need that with a griff. The two I've hunted with are my father-in-law's and they stay within range while still searching for birds. As far as stamina, he hunts his for two weeks at a time every day when he hunts chukar in the Nevada mountains.

Yes, that is Mearns, Scailed and Gambrels. The Az slam in a day. Great pictures love the Huns.

2 weeks!? Does he alternate dogs or are they both on the ground together all day for 2 weeks?

He must do some good conditioning on their feet if they hunt chukar for that long without going lame.

This doesn’t happen often. I have done it once when hunting on the east side of the santaritas, (1/2 way between Tucson and Mexico. Where were you?

The Chirachuas, have done it several times in the San Rafael valley as well. The hardest bird to get is the plain old Gambrels. Start early get your Scalies then Mearns, then drive and chase down Gambrels. It’s a lot of fun but tough to leave one species when the shootings is good. But your right not by any means easy to do. Never hunted the Santaritas. Have to try some day.

Well I’m 62 now so this happened around 45 years ago. We were parked in one spot all morning and I had a limit before noon. I’ve never hunted over dogs before but I hope to, some day. I’m moving to Oregon next spring and hopefully can find some good bird hunting.

I don't know how I missed the side by side when you posted this. That a nice looking gun. Great wood. It's not a Parker is it? Double triggers?

Thanks that’s an AYA, model 425, modern Spanish SxS. 16 gauge. That’s my go to along with a Rizzin8 16.

I've only scene AYA's in marketing materials. It's a great looking gun. I like it even more since you mentioned that it's a 16 ga. It was my grandpa's preferred gauge for duck hunting in South East Texas back in the 40's and 50's. Double triggers?

I've always thought that the only authentic way to shoot 16 ga is from a side-by-side. I'll have to look at listings for AYA's more closely in the future.

Thanks, the Spainyards have been making some fine guns. A 16 on a true frame is extremely versatile and a joy to carry. You can chose loads between 7/8 and 1 1/8 Oz.

One thing I've been working on with my dog is to use the "tone" with the e-collar as the equivalent to "come". She's slowly but surely figuring it out. That way even if shes out there I don't have to yell, and I don't have to buzz her because it's not a true correction, just a command.

I have been considering doing this too. So far I have been using the tone as a warning and have only had to "correct" him a couple of times. I want to get him consistently coming to the whistle as well. I'm almost there on the whistle so the ecollar beep would be a good transition.

whistle sound carries a LONG way and has always worked for me on my dogs, even in high wind. I have to admit I can't afford the e collar though!
