RBP RX-3 Seps - first impression...not good

After looking at all the side steps available out there, and wanting something different, I found and ordered the RBP RX-3 steps. My previous side steps on my 2008 DC were Go Rhino Dominators so I wanted a different look.

I just got home yesterday to after being out of town for work and got to finally open the box up and see them first hand. I was very disappointed to say the least. The factory finish is horrible and the tubing sounds very thin. Multiple places where he factory finish had issues.

And after looking closer there was some shipping damage that put a dent in the tubing and more paint was missing.

Based on the high price the overall quality is not worth the cost. So with that said I do not recommend them to anyone and I'll be returning them and continue the search for side steps... Not sure if I should go with NFab or what. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

N Fabs are nice, but check out Iron Cross and Ranch Hand steps. RBP's certainly look nice. Too bad. Other than a fab shop step, the Ranch Hand steps use heavy gauge tubing compared to many popular brands. 12 gauge I think. Check out RanchHandTruckfitters.com

 

Thanks for the suggestions matluth. Yeah, I really liked the looks of the RBP but I'm hesitant on getting them replace and having finish issues later down the road and concerned that they might dent easily.

 

Agreed that the shipping damage is not an RBP issue but it makes you wonder about the longevity of the products finish if it can't handle shipping. I was more amazed that there was a dent and it look like it may have been caused by the other step.

 

Nothings worse than spending a pile of cash and being disappointed!! I've wasted my fair share already. What was the cost on those? I replied to your other post on my build. I'm very happy with my All Pro Sliders. I ordered them DOM, unfinished. I think I paid $810 shipped. I powder coated mine with a nice heavy textured finish. That only cost me $75 at a local shop. They're holding up great. They're extremely HD. Installation is a 2 man job with a jack. I had to make a few changes to bracket. I have that posted on my build.

 

The RBP's are nice and like you said, you already have them. The finish isn't messed up that bad. Is there any way to get tubing thickness info from RBP? Wouldn't hurt to give them a call to address your concerns.

Thanks tat2ude. I got a pretty good deal on hem through CarID for $666 shipped which is a lot less than most places. So cost wise it wasn't too bad but I hate being disappointed when you expect quality products for what they want for them.

 

If those were any good quality tubes, they would have never dented from minor shipping damage. The problem with getting good deals is, that they really aren't that good, if the quality of the materials is crap. it always seems you get what you pay for . For my 6000 pound truck, I would want some high quality sliders, so if the weight of the truck depends on them, to keep from crushing the lower panels, they would hold up, from all the weight of the truck. Look at the Demello Dominator, sliders for something to protect your investment.
They kept his 4unner from total side damage on a side roll and kept his other 4runner almost undamaged, from a t-bone hit

 

Thanks Wikid. The deal seemed good considering they were $700-$800 most places but I agree good deal can be too good to be true. I thought the same regarding a dent during shipping as it concerns me in the overall durability of them.

 

Looking at the 3 brackets there on the RBP that attach to frame... doesn't look like a whole lot of support compared to the All Pro.

 

Iron Cross will stand by their product. I have replaced two sets under warranty for finish (powder coat) issues. No questions asked send a new set out! Customer service at the finest!

 

Then there are these. Very heavy duty tubing is hidden under thick sheet metal. can bolt or weld on. I have seen these up close and they are no joke. Pricey. $1100. Step/sliders. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/tundra_sliders.htm

 

Flowbrandx I just purchased a set of ICI Magnum RT's from RBW (running board world.com). They are triple stage powdercoated, they came packaged with cardboard spacers to keep the 2 steps from hitting each other during shipping, plus wrapped in bubble wrap to protect the steps. The steps have a very unique look, and really complimented the lower lines of the Tundra. $400 seemed like a bargain compared to the price of some of the other steps out there. Check them out when you get a chance!

Most of the goodies I saw at their shop are definitely built for the serious off roader. Very heavy duty. Mostly FJ stuff but some real decent stuff for the Tundra. I have not seen any sliders yet with such large bracket/mount plating. The pic doesn't include all the mounts. There is at least one more. Wish I could afford them. I don't really need them for my use to justify the cost.

 

Same here. I couldn't just the cost either since I'm not using this truck for serious off road obsticales

 

There is a group of jeepers that built their own rock crawler course up in the mts next to my friends property. Their jeeps are set up for that kind of abuse. All fitted with sliders, Marlin crawler transfer cases, axles and such. Cool to watch them, but I will never be doing anything remotely to what they do. The Tundra is just too big and cumbersome for that kind of wheeling although I'm sure there are Tundras fixed up for that.
