Brake Dilemma

Hey Everyone. I'm in the market for new brakes (close to 50K on the Pro) as I'm currently getting a vibe when slowing down. I think I've got it narrowed down to the 2 following "kits". I'm planning on doing front and rear for peice of mind. My Pro is daily driven w/ maybe 10% offroad use. Do slotted/drilled rotors really make that much of a difference over smooth? What about any kind of offroad use? What is the difference between the Green/Yellow and Ultimax? Please let me know your thoughts.

I have a 67 camaro... I did a 4 wheel disc conversion and at the end of it - was mighty peeved with the return on investment.... stopping took way too much planning in my opinion.

Someone told me to try EBC yellows before I dropped several grand on a baer system.... holy crap - best $100 I've ever spent. Braking is ridiculous you'd never guess that was all I changed. I don't know what the difference is between yellow/green and so on but their website is pretty good at directing you. For my needs, yellows fitted the bill and they're ridiculously good.

 

If EBC is the way to go.... Which option?

Premium Rotors w/ Ultimax f/r = $292

do you need rotors - are they warped? If it were me, I'd just lathe them and put pads on.

 

I put the z36 powerstop pads and slotted/drilled on my 2004 tundra access cab 4x4 and it was markedly better than OEM. I can't speak to EBC but I have always heard good things about them

I feel like my rotors are warped because of the shimmy/vibration I get in the brake pedal as well as the steering wheel. This as well as peice of mind are why I am going with front & rear rotors & pads. I'll be getting tires before winter also. Gotta start off fresh.

 

could it be bad balancing on your tires or even alignment ?

 

With my experience on my old much lighter Tacoma, the drilled and slotted rotors make a tiny difference in performance. But they last much longer than regular rotors. No experience yet with the much heavier Tundra.

 

Truck tracks straight, so alignment should be ok. I'm not ruling the tires out, but I don't have any vibrations while driving. Only braking. There is about 1 ware bare left on the factor michelines, so new tires are being researched. Either 305/65 Wildpeak AT3W or 285/70 EXO Grapplers.

I haven’t done anything brake wise yet. Still figuring out what I want to go with. New tires are on.

Are slotted and drilled worth it or are regulars just fine? The EBC standard rotors with a yellow stuff or something like that might be the route I go. We shall see.

 

Seems weird that so many have issues with the stock rotors. I towed a boat and off-road pretty hard all in the southwest desert without any issues. Changed to hawk pads at 50k and just replaced again at 100k still on the stock rotors since they are still within spec. I would have them turned, add new pads and see if that fixes it before dropping money on new rotors. I have done slotted and drilled on other vehicles and the only different I noticed was in my pocket book.

 

Took my Tindra in for 15k service and asked them to look into the braking vibration. They confirmed warped rotors, I haven't towed anything yet. They charged me $120 to even out the rotors, said it was wear and tear and not covered even though it's only 15k miles.

 

Would think the brakes on the Tundra should last allot longer than what you guys are saying. At least 100K

 

I had to replace my pads w/ EBC ceramic at about 35k miles, rotors were fine.

 

AC Delco brakes last over 100,000 miles. But the problem with that is they outlast the trucks...

 

my rotors were wrapped at about 53K. I swapped to some slotted ones from Stop Tech. oem pads were still good but since I was working on brakes I installed ceramic ones. Brakes really well now and no more vibrations.

 

I ordered and installed the Power Stop Z36 front brake kit on my 2012 4X4 this past September after having some rotor warping issues after 80,000+ miles on the original brakes. I then promptly did a 4,500 mile road trip and they performed great. I now have about 6,000 miles on them and they are great so far but time will tell.

 

Out last what trucks? chevy? dodge? I'm sure you're not talking tundras.....

 

Only if you drive like a granny and never tow anything. Brake life is definitely a YMMV thing.

I went Powerstop as well... Seen a handful of guys I used to wheel with use them and people swear by them in the pre running scene when they can't afford brembos.

200 and some odd bucks for carbon ceramic pads and drilled slotted rotors. about 15k on them and they still feel absolutely perfect.




Stock vs OEM - Much beefier.
