I'm sure this topic has been discussed a 100 times. I have some questions for you that made the switch from Taco to Tundra. I have a 2009 Tacoma DCLB TRD Sport. The truck is great love it my reason for considering the switch is v8 to tow trailer I can fit a sheet of 4x8 plywood in between the wheel wells an I can get a decent truck far cheaper than than a Tacoma. I want to know what is there for aftermarket support? The 2nd gen taco has loads of things available. I have a few little things done that I like ram mount for phone off the grab handle bolt on the a pillar storage dividers for glove box an center counsel. You could spend a week going thru threads on Tacomaworld reading all the little diy projects for the tacoma. My truck will be my dd/work truck I own rental property so I haul some tools an lumber around on occasion. This rig will also be my overlanding hunting rig. I plan on taking off for some extended overlanding/hunting fishing trips so I will be doing some modifications to it to make it more capable off an on road.
What holds me back from jumping ship is the aftermarket support for the 2nd gen taco an it's not just bumpers roof racks sliders that type of thing it's all the small stuff that's out there to make my Taco more capable an better laid out in the cab. So please guy throw some Tundra knowledge at me tell me about all the great stuff that's available for the 1st gen tundra.

When I ask about after market I'm thinking bumpers sliders roof racks the support for 2nd gen tacomas is huge. I'm just not very familiar with the second gen tundra.

I recently switched from 07 PreRunner to 06 CrewMax 4x4 TRD and don't have any experience with roof racks but I chose the first gen tundra because I can get just as much truck with a little more room (blasphemy I know) for cheaper than the 2nd gen taco.....Now towing capacity of the DCLB is 6800 right? which is the same as the 4.7L V8 thats in the first gen tundra, Unless I'm mistaken they didn't start putting the 5.7 and making the 4.6 until the 2nd gens rolled out in 07. Its also pretty easy to find aftermarket stuff for your rig by searching for other tundras in your area, I found running boards($80), a cap ($100) and a grill guard ($75) within the first week of having my truck just by looking at facebook marketplace. If hauling plywood or drywall is your primary reason it might be easier to just get a small utility trailer wouldn't it?

I have a utility trailer I use sometimes to haul tools an mower when I have to work on one of my rentals. the towing capacity for my pickup is 6500 I'm pretty sure. I thought first gen tundra was like 7500. I plan on getting a exposition type camper to pull an figured the v8 would handle the trailer better. I like that they are the same size as my Taco with more cabin room.

unfortunately 6500 is it, I'm sure that you could absolutely pull more than that though hahaha and with the bump in torque I'm sure it would handle better, as far as interior mods I'm really not too sure as I've only had mine for a couple weeks but I'd be very interested if we started seeing some of the taco diy ingenuity on this forum as well. Good luck!
