My buddy just spent $70k in an F150 and started telling me how the Tundra was dated and needs a serious 'refresher' on its looks. I decided to challenge him a bit and pull up pics of the last 10 years of the F150 and left him silent. If truck needs a refresher it is the F150. They all look exactly the same with a few tweeks to the front end.

I never quite understand the "Tundra needs a refresh" comeback...its seems like people feels it just needs to be updated just for the sake of it. Like that's the standard argument when you bring up a Tundra. I came from a 2015 BMW, and I don't feel that my truck is out of date or that it needs some type of makeover. If I did, I wouldn't have bought it.

Seems like the big 3 like to constantly refresh their models, but don't seem to invest the same energy in making them more reliable or better quality.

I did see this on a F150 the other day that I thought was cool. It's a bed step they hides in the tailgate.

Here's the problem I see with the "refresh" idea. Changing things leads to possible issues. Every time a drastic new change is implemented it usually has bugs and problems which can take a couple years to iron out. If you constantly change things, you just constantly introduce new possible issues.

I think that is what a lot of people say because it is what all of the magazine reviews say. I agree that the interior on my 2016 Platinum is very competitive in the industry and the outside of the truck is one of the best looking trucks on the market.

That being said, there are some things about the Tundra that are dated. Not just dated in the truck industry, but dated in the Toyota assortment of vehicles. I like my Tundra, but that doesn't mean Toyota gets a free pass. They can't just make a reliable truck and not include the modern features from their other car lines. For instance:

    • How does a company like Toyota known to have the most efficient cars in the market have one of the least efficient trucks in the market. The V8 engines in the Tundra are some of the few engines Toyota makes that doesn't have direct inject, something they have been putting in other Toyota cars for over 10 years. It is reliable and proven to give more HP, Torque, and MPG.
    • How does a entry level Corolla have LED headlights and my $50k truck doesn't even have projectors, let alone HID or LED (yes, I know in 2008 they are going to update this)
    • Why is the Tundra one of the only vehicles that Toyota makes that doesn't have keyless ignition. Granted you might not want it, but for those who do it would be a nice option.
    • Why doesn't the Tundra have 360 degree cameras? It is the largest vehicle Toyota sells in the USA, it would be nice to see what is all around me like a Land Cruiser.
    • Why does a Tacoma, 4-Runner, and Land Cruiser all have an optional locking rear end, but the Tundra doesn't. You can't say the Tundra has ATRAC so it doesn't need it, when the other 3 trucks have ATRAC and still have it.
The list can go on when just comparing the Tundra to the other cars in Toyota's assortment, most at lower retails. When you compare the Tundra to other trucks, the list gets even bigger.

I would still buy my Tundra again, but that doesn't mean the Tundra doesn't need to be updated.

    Just my 2 cents

By the time I need that I won't be able to get into the truck. Kinda looks like another gadget that's gonna break.

Agree. Can't get my wife to consider Yotas cause they don't excite her. Looking at a Highlander the 3rd row seats are manually lowered where as other cars are electric. I understand why, the more tech the more probability for future failure. Agree with your assessment on the Tundra but would still get my low frills truck anytime.

Before this Tundra the last new truck I bought was a 2001 Tacoma, before that, a 1975 Chevy. I'm pretty amazed at the level of technology in this truck and I really think it sucks that I can't just fix stuff that breaks cause it's gotta be "diagnosed". My .02

I looked at an F-150 before I bought my Tundra. The salesman tried to pull out the step out of the tail gate to show me the step. It got jammed and wouldn't come out of the tail gate. I just shook my head and left
