This is driving me crazy, I've had a few people look at it and everybody is scratching their head. 2008 with a 5.7, 165,000 miles. Anybody have any ideas? It's intermittent, cold engine, hot engine, goes away for a bit then comes back. Super strange. If anyone can point me in a certain direction I'll Venmo you beer money. Thanks!

Wow that’s an odd and what I’m sure is super annoying to you. If I’m being honest you want me building your house, not working on your truck. It’s one of the many reasons I am here.

Sounds belt tensioner’ish to me. If you can get an eye on it while its running…and see if its dancing/bouncing around, prob worth lookin’ into.

    At least sounds external.

I was starting to think that as well last night as I was crawling around the engine bay trying to locate the sound, but the sound is very metallic and not as much electric, but it's very tricky.

I didn't mention in my original post that this issue first started soon after an oil change that I had a shop do for me. I've used this shop for years but they recently changed ownership and staff. No idea if an incorrect oil could be causing this, the service tech at the Toyota dealership that listened to it didn't think so, but again, who knows.

Could be spark-related, but you would probably have a misfire code as often as it's happening. It almost sounds like a relay clicking on...but not sure what would cause this after an oil change, can you narrow down the area of the clicking? Louder towards the driver's side, or passenger's side? Top or bottom?

It seems to be on the passenger side up top. I can't tell if it's more towards the front or back, the sound seems bounce around and is hard to locate. I put my screwdriver stethoscope on about every surface and nothing.....good point on spark, no error codes and no performance issues at all.

There is a relay box on the passenger wheel well, might be worth checking out if it's coming from there.

I opened the main relay box behind the battery, nothing. There is a box behind the air intake that is just some big connectors, not sure where the relay box is on the passenger wheel well. As I listened again just now, it seems like the noise is passenger side towards the front of the engine, possibly mid way down the height of the engine, but again the sound location is really elusive to pinpoint.

I was mistaken, I thought that box was additional relays...any chance the oil technician left something that's getting hit by the belt or fan? Or maybe left something loose on the air filter assembly?

So I was just now poking around with the engine off after running for just under 10 minutes, it was sitting for probably 10-15 minutes and as I was looking at things I heard an audible snap/tick/click sound from the front of the engine that sounded like the same noise as I've been hearing. I started the engine and no clicking sound. I drove around the neighborhood and came back and let it run. Nothing. No clicking/ticking sound. Weirdest damn thing I've ever seen.

I really sounded like that click came from the VVT solenoid on the passenger side, top position. Could that thing be making that noise?

Oil filter collapsed? Preventing proper oil flow to solenoids and everything? The canister has a metal tube in it to prevent that. Some places leave it out being lazy.

Not certain, but if it's happening when the engine is off, I wouldn't think so. Unless there's an issue with the wiring maybe. Did they loosen the negative battery terminal and forget to tighten, thinking to reset the oil maintenance timer? Shot in the dark...

Have you tried listening to the air conditioning compressor clutch? And is the a/c working normally? It sounds almost as if that clutch is trying to engage multiple times.

Yeah, the noise isn't coming from the A/C compressor.

Kind of sounds like timing chain slap to me. What weight oil are you using? Maybe try something a little heavier.

Yeah, I might drop the oil and replace with what I know is correct and see what happens. That will at least rule out the oil and filter.
