Hey, a couple weeks ago I bought my first truck. A first gen, 04 access cab. Seemed to be in decent shape, few basic repairs: breaks oxygen sensor, etc. Took it to my favorite dealership. They came back "the frame is unsafe, we can do no repairs"
I'm not out anything beyond the initial cost yet but looking for a shop to take it to.
I already really like it, and have made the most of several opportunities.

I would be VERY careful at this point. If the frame fails while driving it could be the last mistake you ever make.

Safe-T-Cap makes good frame "repair" products. You have to have good metal to weld to. Pics of your frame would be good to see.

Depending on where you purchased it and how long ago you may be legally eligible to return it for a refund since it is unsafe to drive and it was sold to you like that. Depends on your state.

People have been known to overreact about rusty frame conditions. If it looks good to you, then I'm sure there is a shop that will be happy to work on it. The body looks great, how bad is the frame really?

Heres the pictures I took after picking it up. I cannot tell where they tried to lift from, no marking.
The stuff coming off in the one photo was a tarish material that I picked at.

It's rusty. What are your intentions with it? Do you want to pull a skid loader, push a snow plow or....? I wouldn't tow a skid loader, but I would push a snowplow with that. Keeping in mind it is rusty. I think that would make a great everyday-use vehicle for a few years. Maybe an unpopular opinion here. I don't know what the lower ball joints look like, but if they are at least replaceable, then keep it and enjoy it.

Thanks. My intensions are simple owner truck. Grab wood. Go kayaking. Pick up free stuff.
So Im soliciting second opinions and I called my nearest Safe-T Cap installer. Im gonna refrain from driving it untill I get someone to have a look.

Go over the questionable areas with a ball peen hammer to check how solid the frame metal is there. Also check the laws in your area, you may have some recourse there getting sold a truck that should’ve failed inspection. I can’t tell much from my phone but it looks partially repaired and covered in undercoat.

I’m no expert so I simply hope that you find some good answers and it all works out!

Update. Took it to a Safe-T-cap installer. Frame is unrepairable and is in-fact unsafe to drive. New frame would be 8-10k and I'd have to find the frame. Which is twice what I paid for it.

Contacted the seller and they have not responded in 30 days. Also a lawyer and they were uninterested. Contacted Toyota and they were very kind but its too old for them to help with. So I'm looking to sell it for parts.
