Hey everyone! New to this forum and I’m a new 2023 Tundra owner. I’ve owned it for about a week and I like 99% of everything it offers except the sound quality of the “premium” JBL system. The bass is loud and sounds pretty good but the sound (volume) stinks in my opinion (unless I’m missing something). All the sound seems to come from the center dashboard speaker (only) and unless my front door speakers are defective, I don’t hear jack $hit coming out of them. Are these speakers just subwoofers/bass only? Just disappointed when windows are open and I’m driving that I have to turn volume to the 50s (60 is max) to get an “ok” sound level. Those that disagree or feel like I need to get a hearing test, just stop now. I’m 44 yrs old, paid $70k for this truck and dammit, I want to really hear some old school Guns-n-Roses on a nice summer day. I want my kids to hear music when the back rear window is down cruising through the neighborhood. Sound volume isn’t good, period.

So, the question is do you feel the same? Do I need to upgrade my “upgraded” JBL premium sound system? Talk to me!

Aftermarket halo headlights with HID, various LED bulb replacements. 17" Fuel Blitz wheels with some 33" Nitto terra grapplers. Hoodscoop, nfab nerfbars, Bushwacker flares. No-name aftermarket grille, led fender extensions. Black Horse bambi-basher. Various offroad lights.
JBL sound systems are the bane of Tundras. For all that Toyota does right, JBL isn't one of them. Oh, and welcome :worthless:

Hello, I have the jbl premium system and it sounds great for a factory system. I had aftermarket stereos in all my vehicles until a few years ago. There's obviously something wrong. Mine does simulated surround sound like a champ and it's plenty loud at the high teens low twenties. This sounds way better than the Tacoma by far!

Keep tweaking the settings. I think when I turned off the simulated surround mine sounded better to me. I’ve noticed a lot of difference in my sources too. My music from my phone and Sirrus sound much better but can vary. Keep experimenting!

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.

    I agree!
I had an aftermarket sound system installed on my 2017 Tundra and the JBL system on my 2022 sounds just as good!
Tweak the system through settings. I faded the sound to the rear speakers a tad. The bass comes from the front door speakers. Satellite radio and Bluetooth radio seems to sound a little bit better than the standard radio. I turned off HD radio because the signal goes in and out where I live.

I had to adjust mine slightly rearward from center. Definitely try some adjustments and it does vary by source. Overall, I'd say it sounds great though.

I have the stock system and have the same problems - can’t hear the radio when the windows are down unless its turned above 50 volume. I think my plan is to go to a good car stereo shop at some point and drop a G or more on better speakers and amp.

Pretty sure we have the same set-up. It just might be the speaker location. All the music (sound) is on the dashboard and since the dashboard is huge, it stays in that area.

I’m glad you’re happy but maybe you’re comparing it to something that was way worse? Listen, I’ve certainly heard worse but just not a premium sound at all in my opinion, specifically the volume level.

Solid feedback. Appreciate it. Just turned off surround sound and pushed balance back one notch (to rear). I’ll give this a try and see what happens.

Thanks and good advice. I’ll play around with the settings and see what happens I guess. Was expecting a better overall quality and sound at the end of the day. Oh well…

I have found sources vary a lot. SiriusXM stations vary in quality sound. I’m pretty satisfied with mine but I am 60 and have hearing aids after all the years of jamming to Skynard and Zepplin! Might want to think long term on the volume, just sayin’.

I dont have the issue you are describing. Mine is pretty loud at 45 but I have no problem turning it to max. It could be louder for sure. The Jbl in my 23 is MUCH better than the premium jbl system from my 21. The 21 on max was about the same as the 23 on 45. The 23 has much better mids and bass as well.

anyway, maybe see if you can hop in another truck at your dealership, adjust the audio to the same as yours and see if it sounds different. Maybe something is up with yours?

Does the JBL system in the 23 have a preamp out?

Be prepared for "or more". The JBL head-unit encodes the signal preventing the ability to arbitrarily add/improve components. Once you decide to make a change a person has to replace the entire freaking thing.

My 2013 Highlander with JBL sounds awesome but agree my 2023 1874 dims in compare with same Pandora BLE Radio. I'll give the tweeks above a go.

I just bought one on Monday. I agree that the volume sucks! Otherwise, it sounds decent. I may upgrade the speakers later. You may want to place your order now as it says "will ship by..." So, there's a chance you could get it earlier.
