I searched around the pet forum but I didn't see a specific thread about pet insurance.
Maverick is getting CCL surgery next month, so that's a done deal.
It's a bit costly but that is why was have savings..

In past dogs, we've had several tumors removed, not sure if insurance would have even paid for it.
They were all benign and not life-threatening.
I think they bothered us more than they bothered the dog.

Vet says with Maverick's breed or breeding that he may be prone to the CCL injury (or others like it) and if could happen again with either leg.
Does pet insurance have pre-existing clauses?

Who has pet insurance and who do you use?
Who considered pet insurance and decided against it?

Probably something we should have looked into and decided on when he was a puppy..

    Thanks in advance.
    Enjoy your weekend..

I was offered it years ago, turned it down. I wasn't sure which (if any or all) vet clinics accepted it if I used it or what clauses it would or wouldn't cover. I should have done more research at the time but never did.

@Jimes and @ReCKzX have it from some older posts that I saw. Not sure if they have been on in a while.

We have trupanion for our dog, $80 CAD/month with $1k deductable. Not sure if its worth it? Could probably put $80/month into savings and be ahead. but if he got hit by a car or something serious nice to know money would not be an issue.
He has been in for stomach issues in the past so I believe any further stomach issues the 1k deductable is waived.

We have pets best. 100.00 a month per dog. 250.00 deductible. Covers 90%
That’s also with the wellness plan that covers annual shots and exams.

1 of our dogs has chronic issues with her elbows over the last 3 years. Pets Best has covered almost 25,000.00. I can’t say enough good things about them.

we have to foot the bill at the vets and then submit the paperwork for reimbursement. Usually takes 4-6 weeks for the money to be deposited in my acct.

I'll never get pet insurance again. It's a scam I'm my eyes and my experience. You are better off keeping your dog healthy as can be with exercise, don't let them get obese and pay for things they pop up unexpectedly.

It does NOT cover pre-existing conditions as far as I know, ours didn't.

It covers less and less as the dogs get older, at least with the insurance we had years ago

We put a claim in once, on our dog that was probably 8-9 at the time. Of the $1500 or so, they covered about $200. When I called and said "what's up?", they explained that as the dog get older they cover less as dogs are more likely to get sick etc. I cancelled on the spot and never looked back.

They was my experience. This was in Canada, I forget which company it was.

Read the policy fine print, ask a bunch of questions and make sure you know what they will and will not cover, especially as they age and if the coverage changes as they get older.

Thanks for the tag. Yes I have Healthy Paws pet insurance for my GSD. $250 deductible and 80/20. Right now it is $67 per month. It goes up a little every year. I've had it since my GSD was 8 weeks old. He is now 3.5 years old. I have nothing but positive reviews for Healthy Paws. They pay out very quickly. I have never had a claim rejected. Biggest claim was a root canal procedure done by vet dentist in Irvine that was like 4k+.

If you have any kind of reasonable savings, pet insurance isn’t worth it in my opinion. We’re on our fourth and fifth golden retrievers and running rough numbers over their lives (our first 3 lived to 12-14 years) were are way ahead. And each one had at least one emergency visit. Pet insurance will cost about $10,000 in premiums over the course of the dogs life plus deductibles and the uncovered portions of the cost of services.
