Just when I thought I have everything settled on this truck...

Could someone tell me me which part I need here? I'm not sure how or when but it looks like I'm missing the bushing here? The diagrams online are a tad confusing. I don't believe anything is broken. Will a generic "truck tailgate bushing" work here?

Seems like everyone has issues with the driver's side and the strut. I'm trying to figure out if I can just replace that bushing. Nothing actually appears to be broken, per se. There's obviously something that needs to be in between the two brackets to keep it "tight".

Definitely looks like one of the bushings in finding online could work. Might just have to make a trip to a couple auto parts stores to try and find something that might fit... Thanks!

Here’s another video with a 1st gen and he mentions someone who custom prints bushings. Maybe he can/is doing them for later gens.

The bushing included in the Ford/GM kits I'm finding look similar... But without having the old one it's hard to say if it would work without trying to fit it. Seems doofy to have to order a $40 hinge for a cheap piece of plastic, but I guess that's the game...

Don’t forget the new hinges come bare metal so should probably be painted. Also the $20 cushions lol

Dorman might make one that is compatible if Toyota parts desk doesn't come up with a replacement.

So I managed to pull it (the bushing was still there I guess), not sure why it's sliding off... Maybe worn or damaged?

Worn. If you looked at the Youtube link I posted, you will see that he talks about his bushing being worn and what he planned to do to remedy it.

Yeah I may look at adding some tape or something to it for the time being...

In the video he mentioned $35 for the printed bushing...at that price point I may as well just buy the bracket, pull the bushing to swap, and have an extra bracket just in case...

I found an OEM replacement on Ebay for $34, so just pulled the trigger on that. I'll report back when it arrives. I'm just planning on swapping the bushing into my existing one so I don't have to paint the new one.

I woke up in the middle of the night wondering if there was a secondary bushing on these, as most of the kits I've found have two pieces: one that goes on the tailgate bracket itself, and one that covers the hinge portion on the body. But, from what I can see, there's only the one plastic piece that goes on top of the metal C-shaped attachment point. A lot of other trucks seem to have a slightly more complex setup (i.e. one additional piece of plastic). I guess that makes some sort of sense as then both ends have plastic wear pieces, but it seems like the Tundra only has one. Maybe simpler, but more opportunity for the metal itself to wear. Weirder as it appears the driver's side has a plastic cover over that point.

    Passenger's side: 66101E

Oh, ha....not worried about getting ripped off. The generic/domestic kits are like $20-30 as it is, and they contain ONLY the plastic inserts, whereas from Toyota I'm at least getting a piece of metal as well :D

It's more wondering if there actually should be a secondary plastic insert that goes onto the metal part on the truck itself, but it doesn't appear that there is.

The piece attached to the truck you see here (it's actually bolted on) appears on most other trucks to have a plastic cover, so it would be plastic-on-plastic:

    upload_2023-5-1_9-53-0.jpg

The kits all have "cover" pieces for those kits, but Toyota apparently didn't design theirs that way, and other manufacturers seem to have more of a "slot" shape vs. a rounded-off C shape:

    upload_2023-5-1_9-53-45.jpg

The only plastic bushing it looks like Toyota uses is the insert here:

    upload_2023-5-1_9-55-18.jpg

It was mostly a matter of me wondering if I missed something and would need to order another piece. The above hinge is part of the tailgate, but the part it actually attaches to is part of the body diagram. But after reviewing this morning it looks like I *should* have what I need.

Although from a price perspective...it would be nice if it was as simple as this:

Okay...so I got the replacement hinge and pulled the plastic insert and swapped it into the existing one - no change. The hinge just kind of slides off awkwardly when I lower the tailgate.

I don't drive the truck much right now, but I'm planning on using it this week, so I'd like to try and resolve it. What else should I even be looking at? I didn't notice anything loose at all, but maybe I missed something? Amd I potentially looking at the wrong side/thing? The other side seems to work just fine. I don't see any other pieces in any parts diagrams, so I'm relatively sure I have everything there, but maybe not?

I'm almost starting to wonder if someone maybe clipped my rear bumper in a parking lot or something recently and knocked things out of alignment? I noticed the plastic on top of the bumper (where you'd step up) was popped off a bit. I haven't looked in a ton of detail, but there was also a scratch in the bumper paint (which seems to happen frequently). I'll have to snag some pics when I grab the truck. I don't know what it is lately with this thing, but the truck gods have been frowning on me for some reason...

Yep, so sure as shit... Someone must have backed into it and bent the rear bumper up enough to cause the bottom of the tailgate to catch and pop out at the right angle when opening it. FML...I guess nothing thirty seconds and a rubber mallet didn't fix, but I'll need a new trim piece as a couple of the tabs the hold it in broke off...
