Maybe it will finally take my title as I couldn't post previously...

Anyway, Thinking the old beast needs a new starter and wanted to see if anyone here attempted it on your own. Shop wants 6-7 hrs of labor.

New Battery, fuse OK, terminals cleaned... just that dreaded click.. I can "sometimes" get it to turn over and start but few and far between. Hard to understand why for me.

Let me know if you have done this and if there are any tips or tricks to make it a bit less painful.

    Thanks!!

I have heard this job isn't for the casual wrencher.
I have also heard that it can be done by removing the exhaust header.

I would search youtube. Like this one.

Thank you for that.... I have seen a few.... and of course yesterday I jumped it and it started... so I'm gonna wait to see if it was just a fluke or what is happening. I'd rather it work or not work... not this... well... sometimes... sure love to know what else could cause this..... anyone???

    Thanks again!

Ii wouldn't think you could jump a bad starter (could be wrong). I always thought when the solenoid failed it was dead.
If jumping got it started I would be checking all the electrical connections to the starter.

    Good luck!

I'm gonna go on a limb here and say don't go too far as your starter is on borrowed time and you'll probably find yourself stranded. I also jumped my truck with my Celica and it started.... Didn't kill my 4cyl battery, so I left it running awhile. I went on a test drive around the "block" it was maybe a mile from where I lived. I came to a full stop at a stop sign and it died right there.. I had to push it across the street to an open spot when it started raining. That 3/4 mile tow by Triple A was probably the most embarrassing about the whole thing. Told the driver to take the 10 mile rate and claim he dropped it off at a shop of my choosing.

My 2008 starter died last year, in the morning it would start, driving around town as a service vehicle it would not start after a few stops. Once it heated up it was dead, I thought it was my battery also, put in a new battery and it did the same thing, changed the starter at home in the driveway with a help of a friend. Took 4-5 hour. Took forever bc i watching YouTube videos on it and the hardest part is taking the heat shield off and correctly putting it back on, it’s needed to protect the starter from the exhaust manifold.

That top bolt on the inner heat shield is a bitch. Gotta take that time or it gets rounded out and the heat shield must be cut around that bolt. Just ask me how I know...
