I've been going round and round with the stock non-JBL system on my double cab. I figured something had to be wrong with it since the door speakers seem to do very little. I've slowly come to realize they are just terrible and at least one is most likely blown.

I'm looking to upgrade the speakers for more/better sound, but would like to keep the stock head unit since i like the functionality/carplay.

When i look into getting just door speakers, i see warnings about the factory using low impedance speakers, so replacements will be quiet. So i assume i have 2 options:
    • Replace the factory amp and door speakers. This will get better sound and i can add a sub in the future?
    • Replace current speakers with aftermarket 2ohm speakers? Is this just going to put me in the same boat i'm already in? Looks like Crutchfield only lists 2 options for front door speakers, no rear door speakers anyways.
I'm not much of a audio guy, usually the stock crap if fine for me. This is the first modern vehicle i've had that was so bad. Any help would be appreciated.

I did the first option. Kept the stock HU, but replaced the front/rear speakers and tweeters, and replaced the stock amp with a 5-channel amp which drives a 10" shallow-mount sub behind the drivers's side back seat. Probably not as 'clean' as replacing the HU (clean sound, that is) but it still sounds a TON better than the stock setup.

That's what i wanted to hear. Do you mind listing which components you used?

This is what I did and I am happy with the outcome.

Does replacing the amp make it worth while too? Would replacing just the door speakers do very little in improvement? I also have a 2020 non-JBL and think it all sounds weak. I'm not an audio guy and don't need anything special. Just a slight upgrade in sound from stock without putting a lot of money into it.

The stock amp filters out all the highs to the door speakers and just sucks in general. The dash speakers all run direct from the HU, though, so you would see a direct benefit to replacing those. The biggest thing to keep in mind is maintaining the overall impedance of each channel, which is why the stock speakers are a mix of 2, 6 and 8 ohm drivers.

Yes. I replaced the amp too. As @TRDFerguson says it rolls off the bass to protect the door speakers.

    Got it.
    Thanks fellas.

Time to keep doing research to find the route I want to go.
