    It's a very rural area.

The female (screaming in the back, and frantic) was the first to arrive to cover him I believe.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
This is a great video to demonstrate why "officers are forced to discharge their weapons at unarmed suspects". It is not always clear-cut, whether or not the suspect plans to harm someone or if the suspect is armed.

If a suspect is concealing their hand and acting in a manner such as this, one can see why officers may discharge their weapon. An officer does not know what a suspect's intentions are or if the suspect is armed.

I'll bet this officer wishes he would have discharged his weapon first and rightfully so.

Now let's look at it from the other end of the coin.

An officer encounters a suspect acting in the same manner but is unarmed (which the officer has no way of knowing). It is a difficult decision to make, that must be made in fractions of a second, whether or not to 'fire'. Let's say the officer discharges his weapon into the suspect, resulting in his death. It is later discovered that the suspect had no weapon.

How are the above situations different, other than the fact that one of them included an armed suspect with intent to kill. In the latter situation how would an officer know that the suspect does not have lethal intent with a firearm, the officer does not. Therefore the next logical conclusion would be to mitigate the situation but how? That coat was quite thick to trust in a Taser's penetration. Then, what if, the officer shoots the suspect and he is unarmed? Then, what if, he takes the suspect down and during the scuffle, the suspect shoots the officer. All of these scenarios are playing through an officer's mind in just a few seconds.

Situations such as the one in the video, are the reason that Suspects/assailants/whatever you call them/ are shot.

Glad to see the officer made it! I cannot believe who only got 35 years...

That's how fast it happens. Action beats reaction. The Officer's red flags went up, he knew the problem, but there's no easy solution.

More needs to be done to ensure people obey LEO's.

What is the crime/punishment for him to not take his hand out of his pocket? Persistent disorderly? A fine?

What is the cost to the LEO? His/her life?

It's a tough spot to be in.

I watched the vid earlier on video leak Police...an awesome channel on youtube as well as Police activity.
I think in that type of situation the officer should always have his hand on his gun.
These worthless thugs out there i think have a deathwish...they are too damn miserable to be able to do anything positive for themselves and therefore just look for trouble. Thugs do not think like normal. Then there are the people who will always defend the thug....they are just about as worthless in my mind.
The shooter should receive life in prison!

    Ask tell make

There are a ton of different scenarios here and really no true direct answer. Without getting into a rant, one will say the way he handled it was correct, and others will disagree and say no, should have handled it ABC way. If he resorted to his gun many would be up in arms. Sometimes it's a judgment call based on all officer training, factors during said incident etc.

I heard a few years ago, that it was going to be replaced with a new system, "Pretty Pretty Please". haha
I only heard about it a few times in 2016 and never heard about it again.

I'm of the school of thought that this was an absolutely no win situation for the officer

The suspect here had been harassing people at a local store, but nothing that rises to the occasion of drawing down on him immediately
He was non compliant from the word go, and taser was not a good choice just because of the heavy clothing...but i also know that I likely would not have drawn down on the dude either

I don't think the woman screaming was the backup officer but the male who came to the officer's aid did a fantastic job

The area where this occurred is a TINY town in the middle of nowhere that is hard to get to from anywhere. The department has around 10 officers total and being New Years, he was probably the only officer on duty in town. The surrounding county is likely heavily understaffed too and probably only had a handful of officers on duty then as well...I caught a DNR officer responding in the radio traffic, and that to me tells me there was NO ONE nearby

There's no telling how far away EMS was, and it's probably sheer luck one was able to get to him in that short of amount of time

The frantic female made matters worse! Fortunately there was a male bystander/good samaritan who helped keep the officer calm before the psycho-chick arrived on scene.

A little this and that...Broke now
Man..tough call so many factors...like distance for back up and EMT..confusion from both dispatch and responding units..samaritan remained calm..Gotta calm the officer and keep him from going in to shock...Great presence of mind to withdraw to his vehicle and get comms up..I couldn't tell if his hand held was working well. And this is how fast a simple disturbance or attempted theft goes to attempt murder officer involved shooting. And he's gotta make a snap decision in milliseconds. He survived. Went home to his family.Suspect convicted. Win Win. I am bummed about the 35 years though thought he'd get Life.

I'm happy "justice" was served but my school of thought is that this type of animal that commits this type of crime can't be rehabilitated. Too bad the death penalty is too costly and timely to carry out. Props to the civilian.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
I hope people see this and understand the speed and violence of action, and how miniscule the decision time is to process the non-responsive suspect, decide the course of action, and take action.
Just consider: The guy was told 10 times in the first 20 secs to "stop" or "come here" after the officer got out of his car. He was then told 5 times in the next 17 secs to "take your hands out of your pocket". Then the guy fired.
'Look at your watch...In less than 37 secs, you have to make a life and death decision...you or him.....Go!

I am F$#K'N sickened at the lack of virtue and respect for LE these days...
'We want you to protect us, but we don't trust your judgment in 37 secs, so wear this body cam.
'If by chance you run into bad people and your department doesn't provide you x-ray glasses, please don't use/escalate force until a suspect does first...they're probably just scared.
'If someone does shoot at you or is threatening your life, you do what you have to...just make sure your body cam is on. That way we can make the best court case possible.

    - If you shoot and injure them, we'll have a good defense case and won't have to pay out as much money when they sue us.
    - If you shoot and kill them, you'll need to find a new job and move your family out of town, especially if there's rioting.
    - If they kill you, we'll try to bring them to justice. Don't worry...there wont be any big national news coverage or celebrities speaking up for your sacrifice and family. I'm sure your department can handle that at your funeral.
    - If you get hit, hopefully it won't be bad and you, or some nice people can get you help. Just know, you'll most likely not be able to sue them for your injuries, since the state will take care of you. And we're sure you'll be fine after a little while. Since they didn't kill you, it would be attempted murder so they won't be eligible for life.

    Jack Donovan said it best...
"A lot of people like to think they are “non-violent.” Generally, people claim to “abhor” the use of violence, and violence is viewed negatively by most folks. Many fail to differentiate between just and unjust violence. Some especially vain, self-righteous types like to think they have risen above the nasty, violent cultures of their ancestors. They say that “violence isn’t the answer.” They say that “violence doesn’t solve anything.”
...They’re wrong. Every one of them relies on violence, every single day.
...Without action, words are just words. Without violence, laws are just words. Violence isn’t the only answer, but it is the final answer."

DESPITE WHAT YOUR MOMMA TOLD YOU, VIOLENCE SOLVES PROBLEMS!

And while I personally "probably" wouldn't have chosen to track this individual with a stun gun instead of my service pistol, in this situation we have to remember that all the red tape put up makes protectors constantly second guess situations that can lead to catastrophic outcomes. I've seen it overseas and law enforcement has it 10x + harder than we did. It's easy for us to say what we'd do but this officer is referring to lots of training and today's climate and have to make a correct decision 100% of the time. Heck, he could have had his service pistol drawn and legitimately bagged this puke and his and his families world could have turned upside down. Just like the officer that put Michael Brown in his place. He'll never live a regular life. I highly respect but don't envy our law enforcements career.

Agreed. Watch the puke's face when he's looking back at the officer. I'm convinced this dude decided to shoot the second he realized he was facing a taser and not a gun. I can't help but wonder if the s#$tbag would have pulled the gun out of his pocket if the officer had the FSP focused on him?

Total lack of respect for the leo this video shows the difficult job our men and women in blue have out there. I kept thinking the bg was just hiding a booze bottle he just stole. The leo probably should of either waited for a backup or had his firearm out. He also should have tased him right away instead the leo let the bg control the situation by waiting too long. Actually I don't think the leo even fired the taser and with this guys heavy jacket I doubt it would have even worked. He is very lucky to be alive I hope the bg rots in jail.

I thought the exact same thing. A bigger reactionary gap could have helped, because I'm sure that thug couldn't shoot for sh*t beyond a few yards. I get it though, can't keep the distance forever, eventually you need to close in, like a lion.

LEO's need to have a no BS mentality. Like @Sean266 said earlier, ask, tell, make. I don't think the probes would have made a good connection anyway with that thick outfit, but if he drew his pistol instead, I do believe he could have articulated why he did so. Not obeying commands, hand in pocket, no backup.

35 years is a slap in the face to this officer and the LEO community in general. Piss poor.
