I noticed a thread where discounts can be had on US Extended Warranties from Toyota. Does such an option exist here in Canada?

    Thx.

In theory yes, but in practice they tout something about corporate set price - blah blah.

when I bought used & added extra warranty on wife’s RAV4 the did come down a little - the amount between 2 similar length plans with different mileage ranges. Like $40 or something - it was a few yrs ago.

Just keep in mind extended warranties are sold because they are a 100% margin item. This is true for vehicles, electronics, appliances etc.

Not sure about other regions but in Ontario (Canada) there is a legal statute that actually declares any warranty provided by a retailer or manufacturer null and void. It goes on to outline that standards by which retailers and manufacturers must abide by in order to sell their products in Ontario.

The ministry of consumer fairs will assist consumers who are having issues regarding defective goods, deceptive sales practices etc.

For anyone interested Google the consumer protection act of Ontario.

Not trying to change anyone's mind regarding the potential purchase of an extended warranty (there are rare instances where they pay off). Just trying to help people make informed decisions.

Are you referring to warranties bought outside of Canada? Because I find it difficult to believe ( nor do I see the clause which states it) a consumer protection agency would expressly nullify any and all manufacturer warranty.

This is right from the act under part 2 Consumer rights and warranties:

    (3) Any term or acknowledgement, whether part of the consumer agreement or not, that purports to negate or vary any implied condition or warranty under the Sale of Goods Act or any deemed condition or warranty under this Act is void. 2002, c. 30, Sched. A, s. 9 (3)

Which essentially states any warranty that does meet the standards and practices outlined in the act is null and void.

Example: your cell phone has a one year warranty from retailer or manufacturer. Your phone dies after 13 months. Due to the product not lasting what would be an assumed reasonable period of time from purchase (they would tell you the phone would be good for a few years at purchase), you are entitled to a refund, repair or new item.

It's all legal terms so there is room for interpretation. However a close personal friend of mine got himself a new iPhone under these rules. A coworker also had to contact the ministry of consumer affairs and cite this act when Teppermans refused to take a return on an item she was dissatisfied with. They wanted to charge her a pick up and restocking fee in addition to only providing store credit. Long story short they picked up her item at no cost and she was issued a full refund.

I took a law course in college and my teacher had a huge hard on for this. However it is something I think everyone should be aware of.

Sorry for being late to the party. I forgot this site had a Canada section.

The price of Toyota’s ECP is negotiable.
You don’t have to buy it from the dealership where you bought your vehicle.
You can buy it from any Toyota dealership. Not sure if that’s within any in Province or within Canada.
You don’t have to buy it the same day you buy your vehicle.
You have up to 30 days after the vehicle is registered to buy the ECP.
You can get warranty work done at any Toyota dealership within North America.
It may be possible to get close to a grand off a Platinum 84mo/200,000km ECP.

I contacted over two dozen dealerships either via email or their website and requested a quote. Most didn’t reply. This that did offered from no discount to as much as $900 off.
    It’s worth calling around.
You can purchase an extended warranty from any Toyota dealership with 30 days of registering your new truck.
    Good luck!

Thanks Mattedfred, did you end up purchasing one and at what price?

I'm going to check with my sales guy today on the price and also what options exist for years/mileage. The US thread mentions a number of options with I think the 10 year / 100K option being the sweet spot for price.

Our truck isn’t scheduled to arrive until sometime between March 31st and April 10th. So, we haven’t purchase a plan yet.
If you visit Toyota.ca and build a vehicle at the very end you can select and see all of the Toyota ECP’s.I believe the pricing is dependent upon the actual vehicle.
We requested quotes on the Platinum 84 mo/200,000km plan.
I’d recommend contacting your dealership’s F&I person instead of any salesperson. And, contact multiple dealerships and tell them you’re shopping for the best price.
You do not have to service your vehicle at the dealership where you purchased your extended warranty.

I just reviewed the ECP options for my truck (4x4 CrewMax Limited - Limited TRD OR) which is due to arrive next week. With my current Tacoma I've only put on about 15,000 km per year over the last 7 years and I don't expect that to change too much. Most of the plans assume much more frequent driving so I will certainly hit the ECP month limit well before the distance limit, which shortchanges me since I'd expect warranty claims to increase with distance more so than age.

The plan that comes closest is the 7 yr / 120K plan.

    Months KM Price KM/Year
    36 80,000 $1,499 26,667
    39 80,000 $1,539 24,615
    40 80,000 $1,549 24,000
    48 100,000 $1,919 25,000
    48 120,000 $2,219 30,000
    48 140,000 $2,409 35,000
    60 100,000 $2,519 20,000
    60 120,000 $2,729 24,000
    60 160,000 $3,129 32,000
    72 120,000 $3,139 20,000
    72 160,000 $3,459 26,667
    72 200,000 $4,149 33,333
    84 120,000 $3,329 17,143
    84 160,000 $3,829 22,857
    84 200,000 $4,919 28,571

In years 4 to 7 (past standard coverage), I expect my odometer to go from 45,000 to 105,000 km. That's 60,000 additional km.

So basically $3329 to cover failures from years 4-7 on a low mileage (< 105,000 km) vehicle. Still seems a bit much.

I don't usually purchase warranties. My philosophy is that I buy quality items and that is my warranty. And I'm leaning toward no extended warranty here as well.

Anybody here in the same boat as me and how are you evaluating your options?

Would you consider it if the price was discounted? Have you shopped around for the best price? Up to 20% off is possible, if that helps.

Yes, I'll probably do some shopping around after I pick up the truck. Still, even if discounted to $2500, that's about the cost of at least one, maybe two, significant repairs. I also need to do some more reading of threads on 3rd gen issues to assess the risk.

Understood. Just remember to factor in any savings with the 3 years of free maintenance (there are things excluded) that comes with the Platinum ECP if purchased within 30 days of registering the vehicle.

So I picked up my Tundra Crewmax Limited today and ended up purchasing the 84 month / 120,000 km ECP as the finance person kept dropping the price.

The 3 years of free maintenance boils down to 6 service appointments (2 per year for 3 years) valued at $250 each (according to Toyota), so a $1500 value. I received a $600 discount off the $3329 price, so about 18% off.

Total with tax was $2865. Minus the $1500 value for service appointments, I'm essentially paying $1365 for the additional coverage.

    Worth it?

@EndlessWanderer I think so. We’re certainly considering it. We’ve been getting quotes up to 20% off. Which dealer did you purchase from?

We studied the maintenance ECP ‘GOLD’ ‘PLATINUM’ coverages. After reading the fine prints for exclusions, we got the impression that expenses we had with former vehicles, like batteries, tires, filters, belts, hoses, brake pads are excluded from this plan. The detailed information about coverage was not provided beforehand by the dealer. Just a handwritten ‘pitch’ sheet showing how much we would save bringing them work. By the way, the ‘assistance’ amounts are ridiculously low.

We still have some days to buy ECP. It is costly, and shrouded in mystery:
Are we buying a cat in a bag?
Should we pay in advance to bring them work?
What are experiences with work covered by this ECP?
Does anyone have a copy of the Toyota Extra Care Protection Plans, not just the brochure?

I believe that in can but I’m not sure. Contact a dealership in another province and ask. I recommend Jennifer Lyons at Orangeville Toyota.

I have a copy. Send me a PM and I’ll respond later this week with some photos of the documentation. We’re planning to keep our truck for 20 years and over 500,000km and did get $900 off so we approached it as the cost of insurance.

It was worth it to me. I've seen how quickly a repair on new trucks can add up. I had a GMC Sierra that needed the lifters replaced. That was $3500 in parts alone. If I remember right, total including labor was sniffing at $6000. That's more than double what I paid for my ECP on my new Tundra.

Yeah, I am really not sure how it works. I was trying to get a deal from Jennifer at Orangeville like you suggested but while she replied to my initial email she went silent after my second :notsure:
I went to the original dealership today to get my deposit back and I told them since we didn't make a truck deal we still can do ECP deal. Finance guy said 15% off shouldn't be a problem if I want extended warranty from them.

Just resend your last email until she responds. I end up doing that with most folks and eventually get a reply. Can’t imagine how many messages they get in a day.

Finally today was able to purchase ECP with 20% discount. Got it from Medicine Hat Toyota, that's where I bought my Tundra. No dealer in Calgary I have contacted was willing to match it. Funny thing, the dealership in Calgary where I put my original deposit down (I told them since the sale didn't go through I wanted to get the ECP from them) was not happy at all when I asked them for a discount. Finance manager said to my face that they don't do discounts and he doesn't understand why I shop around for it o_O

Shoulda waited and shopped around some. Paid 3300 for 7years or 120k for mine today in Kelowna BC. FInance guy told me he couldn't budge on the warranty. Went $600 lower on the 3m coating though, 1300 for a frontal 3m wrap.

Got quotes $2100 from a 3rd party insurer for 7 years /120k, so seemed comparable ish? ($3300 -6*$200) Also have no idea how reliable the 3rd party, Obvi, is in the first place.
