Will just replacing speakers be a significantly better sound without amping them?

Not sure if mine has an under-seat amp. Is that a standard thing? I thought the speakers were amped by the head unit.

The 3 dash speakers and rear door tweeters are powered by the HU.
The lower door (lows/mid) speakers are powered by the OEM amp under your passenger's seat.

I have an older MTX amp sitting in my garage. Maybe I'll try switching the OEM one with that?

    You could.
Unless it has speaker-level inputs, you'd need some kind of 4-channel LOC for the HU signal.

Also you'll need to know the JBL and non-JBL are different setups.
The JBL system is a bit different.
Some Limiteds have JBL and some don't.

    Non-JBL you'll need this..
2010-2019 Toyota Tundra (w/o JBL Audio) AutoHarnessHouse.com Factory Amp Upgrade Harness AHH-4438 (amazon.com)

As well as running a line from the battery for amp power..

Completely different connections. You would need a Line out converter to connect an aftermarket amp to the OEM setup. If you get an aftermarket head unit, then you would run RCA's from there to the amp, and speaker wire from the speakers to the amp.

When I made the mistake of buying from TT, I also got their harness. That, and the amp mount tray, are the only 2 things I kept from that debacle. I didn't use an LOC, and later when I upgraded the HU, didn't use RCA cables.

Not to jack the thread, but how are you still liking the Pioneer?

Only if you have a JBL system.
    The non-JBL is fairly simple.
All you need is that harness and an LOC to keep the OEM HU.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is an LOC and where do I get one? I'm probably gonna break my truck.

It's a Line out Converter. Audio Control has a few of them. There are different channels and options. Most car stereo shops carry and install them.
