Did you secure it in there or did it just sit in the plastic storage bin?

My biggest thing is, how did you go from the Stock HU to the amp. After that the rest is easy.

    Joe,

The amp is screwed in and the cargo box was cut a little because the sub box is a smidge wider than the cargo box. The sub box sits tight once the cargo box is cut a little.

The Toyota amp under the passenger seat was swapped out with an Alpine power pack amp. That's where the tech wired the HU through that amp to power the door speakers. I also used a different harness than the one Amazon offered

I followed Tundra Tex route almost exactly. He wrote up an amazing post on keeping the stock HU. I ran an audiocontrol LC7i LOC and I had kickers amps and speakers from previous stereo builds I used. Definitely night and day sound improvement. But at very high volume I'm definitely hearing small distortion from the stock HU bad signal.
My best advice would be to just match the AMP RMS wattage with the speakers the best you can. Any brand makes high and low quality speakers. But creating the quality sound starts from having RMS matched.

Anyone know where I can find a harness to plug directly into the existing speaker harness in the doors? I want to use that instead of cutting wires. That way if I ever need to take them out, I can just plug the factory speakers back in.

This post has exactly what you need to know. The stock head unit puts out dirty signal. There are one or two guys that claim they have used line converters and amped new speakers without getting white noise or something, but I always wonder if they are just not hearing it. If I had a '14 and up truck, I'd still try because I wouldn't want to get rid of the stock head unit.

Using a line converter to add a sub shouldn't cause you any sound issues though.

On my '13, I replaced the head unit, speakers and added two amps and a sub. I even rewired the truck with 16 gauge speaker wire. Toyota doesn't really put out decent sound systems. Just my opinion though.

So basically, unless I want to change out the HU, there is no way getting around not using the LC7i converter or something similar.

Correct. You will need some sort of line converter to change the speaker outputs to RCA for amplifiers. There are cheap line converters and there are expensive line converters just like amplifiers of different "Classes". LOC's will be of different qualities and uses as well. A cheap inline LOC could potentially be used for a subwoofer as the subwoofer doesn't need a crisp clear sound like highs do. The LC7i series of LOC's has a bunch of features which is why its a good bang for the buck and a lot of people use it when utilizing the stock head unit. Summing is just one of the great features of the LC7i as well as passing channel 2's audio to channel 3 for a subwoofer hookup for those head units that do not have dedicated subwoofer output(s). My own personal observation on the LC7i is there isn't a ton of documentation and if you have never messed with audio of any kind it may be difficult to dial the unit in without the clipping and/or white noise, etc.

    Pros Cons

    Class A

    • Clean output
    • High fidelity
    • Low distortion
    • Large size
    • Create a lot of heat
    Class B
    • Efficient
    • Smaller size
    • Create less heat
    • Lower audio fidelity
    • Potential signal distortion
    Class A/B
    • More efficient than class A
    • Less distortion than class B
    • Less efficient than class B
    • More distortion than class A
    Class D
    • Extremely efficient
    • Distortion at high frequencies

BTW if you do some searching the LC7i can be found for close to $100 as opposed to the $200+ i've seen at a lot of retailers.

And if you find a great deal on Amazon that shows it is provided by Amazon, Crutchfield will match the price. I saved over $200 doing that when I bought my components. And then you get the great support and some freebies thrown in from Crutchfield.
