There is a Used 2020 Leer XQ for sale that is black for $2500. My future Tundra is Magnetic Gray. Anyone pay to have a Cap painted a different color? Price estimate? Did the paint job workout well? I would have a body shop of some sorts have it done. Thanks

Yeah I mean a body or paint shop will be able to match just about any color! Some are better than others. I can’t speak to the cost for a cap though. Should be easy enough to call around for a quote!

I went thru this exercise last year and here's what I found.

You're probably looking at $500 minimum. At least that's what I got from the 4 or 5 different shops I called/visited, and that was just a scuff and shoot.

Since my windows needed to be pulled and resealed, plus some ding repairs, I decided to do it myself. All said and done I ended up with $140 into paint and supplies.

I have about ZERO paint experience doing something like this but, if you're up for a DIY, it's actually a pretty fun project.

Is it pro? Definitely not. Is it acceptable? Absolutely!

That came out great! How many hours do you think you have into it? I’ll bring one over for you to shoot MGM.

    Lol... Bring it over Adam!

I didn't keep track but, if I were to guess, maybe 20 +/-. Rookie though.

I'd pass. Wait for one that's the right color especially if buying at that price. I looked for 6 months and found one that worked out 1/2 hr off my route on a road trip, right color, loaded, few chips and clearly been repainted once he was asking $900. There was another popped up 5 hr drive away in new condition for $650! Normally I see them get listed and sold for 1-1,500 used around me for a 3rd gen topper. If youre looking at 2k plus a repaint you're close to just buying new.

The black might contrast nicely with the MGM. Especially if your door handles and emblems are blacked out. Plus you can always have it painted whenever you’re ready.

I actually like the black canopy that I put on my super white Tundra but I also wouldn't buy at that price. I only paid $250 for a Leer 100XQ with a broken window.
If you aren't in a rush, I'm sure you will find a better deal.

Old thread, but I’m in the same boat. Do you have any info on the paint, clear, primer you used? How did you sand it down? I’ve got the windows pulled on mine. I’ve gotten a few quotes. Anywhere from $600-$1500. Don’t want to spend that much, but I’m not the best painter out there. I’ve got a compressor and access to a paint sprayer.
    Thanks in advance

Hey Nick, It's been about 4 years since I did my cap and, after just now looking, I couldn't find my orders/receipts.

I do remember that I bought most all the materials thru, of all places, Walmart online.

When I googled my paint code Walmart popped up and they were the cheapest by far. I do wish I had ordered the dark gray primer though. I used medium gray, and while the color match is almost spot on, I think using darker primer would have made it exact.

I sanded using my Porter Cable DA and 220. After primer I sanded again with 400. Wiped it all down with a tack tag and layed down the color, then the clear. Hindsight, I should have skimmed a little filler and sanded again before primer, then sanded again between color and clear but I was in a hurry. According to the paint instructions, I would have had to wait a couple of days for the color to cure before doing clear if I had gone the sand again route.

As far as a paint gun, I used the infamous Harbor Freight "purple" cheapo gun. It worked great! Make sure you put some kind of water separator/filter in line somewhere before the gun.

All in all, I'm VERY happy with the results and it was a super fun project. Just take your time and you'll do just fine.

In the same boat here except I have been looking for 5 months and cannot find any used toppers for a double cab AND I live in Hawaii, so it is extra hard to find one. I looked into buying new, but the final costs would have been anywhere from $3800 to $4800 depending on accessories. Soooo, I did a ton of research and found a shell from an older Dodge Ram that fits fairly well. Not perfect, but for $380, I am going to give it a go, and I am going to highy customize it, so we shall see. I have it torn down and the first primer coat on it. Mine is 20230107_101231.jpg red too!

Thanks for the reply. Right after I asked this question I decided to go with just taking it to MAACO and having them paint it. I realized I am not patient and had limited time to work on this with the weekends I had coming up and just wanted it done. They charged me $600 plus tax, but it was complete in less than 3 days, dropping it off on a Monday and picking it up on Wednesday. Overall they did a good job. The paint color is spot on. There are a few areas of orange peel and just a handful of tiny bubbles in the clear. I think most of this will buff out after the paint cures. I definitely think its a better job than I could have accomplished.

I will keep this info in mind in the future however. I eventually want to color match my bumper and grill surround. I put the cap back together this weekend, adding a few touches. Window tint, painted the inside, LED Lights. I'm happy with the result and glad it is done. I'm one of those that can't sit still until something is complete so the idea of painting it myself might have drove me crazy.

    Thanks again.

Great deal on paint price, I looked a bit this summer in Colorado and most were at or over a grand. Didn’t making spending $1,200 or so on a used one worth it.
