My truck is no show queen and I'm usually not alarmed by the occasional scratch etc but I was washing it yesterday and saw this...
    20230314_133621.jpg

Anyone have a clue what could've caused it? I'm tempted to get insurance to fix it but not quite sure what to tell them.

Charles that picture is very grainy. Is that a chip in the paint down to the metal? Maybe a BB.:notsure:

I'd shrug that of as a rock chip, looks a lot like what I see on windshields.

probably. just have to pay your deductible....whatever that is. maybe get a quote from someone first before involving insurance. or get lawn guys involved, but good luck proving that one.

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
Ya that’s not getting buffed out.

With the skid marks next to it definitely got something ricocheted off your door.

    That sucks.

Helps narrow it down but cause may not matter unless it is from large tire poke with no fenders; issue may repeat if this is the case. Not sure it is worth running it through insurance. Looks like it is down to the bare metal so take care of it before it rusts.

DYI or a detailer with rock chip repair experience can fix this and make it look fairly good. Several vendors sell color match touch up kits; door jam lists your paint code.

Here is an example of what it takes:

Quote is almost as high as a full door repaint and blend.

Maybe it is hard to tell from the pics but how big is the chip? What is the labor breakdown they offered?

Maybe a tad smaller. He's also kinda trying to help me out...

A while back I had my driver side door replaced and repainted due to a little snafoo with a Taco (his fault). When they did that they also repainted my rear door to better blend the newly painted door in. The entire job was poorly done. It took a paint guy to show me how.

Anyway, this body shop is gonna fix the ding but also re-do some of the stuff the stealership did in the name of blending it all together.

That makes more sense now. The quote is average for a full respray. Blending metallics gets tricky. If it were just the chip no more that $200 or so(Edit: note they usually do several touch ups for that one price). Detail shops w/paint correction capabilities that do restoration can patch that up and blend it where it would be hard to notice.

I think the State Farm adjuster agrees. He estimated $660.

I could see that being the price through an adjuster especially if they use a collision repair shop. You can always call around to see what different shops quote you.

Aside from collision repair some detailer shops that offer coating and paint correction typically offer chip repair as part of their services. I had several done on a at once on a metallic paint when I got my vehicles coated but none that large. ~$200 for all including the color matched kit.

He described blocking and sanding the paint surrounding the chip due to the damage going down to the metal. That way there's no difference in paint depth when all's said and done.
