The retarded one came out from under the BBQ to eat this afternoon and it was actual tortoise food, not cat food.

 

I have relatives with a few tortoises roaming the yard. Never knew they hibernated.

 

Turtles? Well here goes....Back in the 90's I was a licensed commercial wildlife breeder with literally thousands of 3-toed Eastern Box Turtles housed in five seperate vivariums on five acres. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle craze was amazing and drove my sales through the roof. I know several of the folks here are from Colorado, and you guys probably know of or remember the many Pet Ranch stores around Denver and the surrounding area. You might have even heard of Jersey John's, Way Cool pets, Golden Pets, etc. Lots of really cool people up there in the pet business and it was tons of fun dealing with every single one. Anyway long story short, I have a bit of turtle experience, and for those of you enjoying your turtle(s) and or tortoise(s), keep on doing your thing and have fun!!

 

Fred the retarded tortoise, aka The Shelled Wonder, has been hanging out in his "pool" this afternoon.

 

With nice weather finally lol. Fred was able to go outside and enjoy his natural food.

 

The retarded one is out.

 

Well the last tortoise hatched 2 weeks ago. Grand total out of 32 eggs laid, we ended up with 30 healthy tortoises. One had 12 scutes instead of the usual 13 but was otherwise healthy!

 

Not my pet. Found this guy in the yard this past weekend. He stuck around for a few hours.

The retarded one did not do his usual weird late summer hibernation and is sticking it out this year. Just fed him a minute ago.

 

My wife just texted me this pic and informed me that the retarded one has awoken from his winter slumber.

 

I spotted this guy(or gal) in my neighbors yard earlier. I've heard box turtles tend to stay in the same small area their entire life so maybe I'll see him again.

 

I am not a turtle expert! But I have boat loads of pictures of 14 different box turtles at my place over a 20+ year span. 3 of them I see every year, the other ones I might not see but once every few years and some not for 6 or 7 years.

Found this guy ( distinct concave curve on the bottom of the shell (plastron) and red eyes) this year and he was last seen in 2016. So yes, I think they have a home range.... how ever big it is I am not sure.
