After market back up camera

I have a back up camera installed in Mt Tundra but it's not very great for clarity and depth. I also would like to be able to see my ball for hooking up trailers. Anybody have an aftermarket setup that would be better?

 

I went with an OEM style backup camera that is mounted in the tailgate handle assembly.

It isn't the highest resolution, but gets the job done. You can see part of my bumper in the picture so no problem seeing a tow ball.

Has anyone else installed an aftermarket backup camera that you really like? Most of the ones I'm seeing seem to be just OK in terms of picture quality, I'd like to find one that's better, especially in the dark. If you've found a good option you recommend I'd appreciate any info.

This would be for an '08 base model with no factory backup camera and a 6' 6" bed. I've also heard some of these units have short wires and wouldn't be recommended for anything longer than the 5' 6" bed so that would be another consideration.

The positioning (looking down) is the most important factor. If you use any other camera it'll be attached to the plate, looking out, and that makes it difficult to judge depth.

But the IQ is fine. Many advertise higher quality cameras but this seems about the same as those.

If it's dark your best bet is to add backup lights to the bumper (which I plan to do at some point).

 

The one I linked to above has a so-so image quality and I would like it to be better, but the main thing is can I see objects/people I don't want to run over. No, I am not seeing them in HD, but quite functional. For the length of wire/wire loom, that camera had plenty of cable for my 2008 double cab (6.5' bed, no factory camera) to route it out the tailgate and then follow the stock wiring loom along the passenger side. I brought it up into the passenger area of the cab and to the head unit.

 

As a workaround for seeing the trailer hitch I'll sometimes use this hack. Keeps the tailgate clear and gives you a good overhead view when hooking up.

 

After I installed the Pioneer HU, I also couldn't help but notice the horrible quality of the OEM rear cam. I did some research and found that the way they measure the pic quality is in TV Lines or TVL. Most of these cameras only have 600 TVL. I stumbled across one on Amazon that claimed to have 800 so I jumped on it. I ended up hacking off the plug and splicing it into my OEM harness connection which yielded a pic that was no better, and in some ways, worse than what I started with. I pulled everything back off, put the OEM back on, and resigned myself to live in pixelated rear cam purgatory.

I installed an aftermarket kit from Sparks Toyota in my 2011 6.5 ' bed that did not have the factory unit about 3 years ago. easy install ,uses toyota harness. works great for trailer hook up.

 

Just acquired a 2007 and the jumper cable that connects to tailgate wiring to the connector under bed was missing. Actually someone had taken tailgate off without disconnecting jumper cable 1st. Had to get that from stealership. But my camera screen is in black and white! Faulty camera or the little viewer screen in headliner?

 

I bought the wireless backup camera from Amazon (below), and absolutely love it. You don’t have to deal with wiring as the screen and camera wirelessly communicate with each other, and there is no noticeable lag. Also, you can show and unshow the backup space line. The vendor’s customer service is great, also (not sponsored lol). I have had this for 3 years now, and it is still working as intended w/o any problems.
