Oil change at 5K or 10K?

I know there are multiple threads about this already. They 40-100 pages deep though. Now that we are a little over a year into this truck, what is your instant, gut reaction, with no explanation: oil change at 5K or 10K?

I don't though. That's why I posted it. I see just as many 10K as I do 5K supporters.

 

My dealer told me Toyota recommends oil changes at 10k intervals and that they no longer use break-in oil. My last Tundra was a 2014 model and I just traded it in when I got my new truck on 17Dec2022. It had 155k miles and I changed the oil every 10k. For my current new truck, I didn't want to wait until 10k miles so I changed it on my own at 2,500 miles. I will likely stick with teh 10k interval from here on out.

 

If you're concerned about the "break-in" period my advice would be change your own at 2500-5000 miles. Then every 10K or 12 months which ever comes first. Synthetic oil is so damn good now and doesn't break down like it used to.

My FFV manual says 5k. It also gets really hot here in southern AZ. So I do 5k.

OK, OP, either join Team 5k or Team 10k. Or go rogue and start Team 7.5k. I am on Team 5k.

 

5K for me, I even do that on my wife's Honda Ridgeline and have done so on all vehicles. Turbos create additional heat which is the enemy of oil and I don't put a lot of miles on it. If I was driving 5000 miles a month I may reconsider doing it at 5K but I don't so I do...

 

5k, I also buy used vehicles and only have a limited previous owner record. I keep vehicles for 7+ years easily, so it's a peace of mind thing for me.

 

Do what you feel comfortable with..
I get mine changed every 10K and don't think twice about it.
Others suggest every 5K.

5k always. Twin turbo vehicles should always be 5k for oil changes. The cleaner environment they have to work in the less likely they will fail.

 

Just do it at 100k you will be alright....Sheeeshhhh

 

I go very 5k miles it just makes me feel better, I’m sure the oil can last the 10k miles, but I don’t stress over the cost of an oil change.

 

I do 10. I took in it at 5 and dealer said, nope, you'll have to pay. I said ok that's fine and he said he didn't want to take my money, it'd be a waste.....a service department that doesn't want money for something!! That was a real eye opener. I won't keep this truck more than a few years, so I don't really care anyhow. This truck could die tomorrow and I won't shed a tear.

 

I did it at 1000-1500.

 

Ill never understand these threads.

50,60,70 even 80K $ trucks and we ask ourselves about oil changes that cost less than $100.

Just change it every 5K, you'll never have to worry about warranty work or post a thread about oil change intervals.

Also it will look great on the Carfax.

Oil and grease is cheap. Use them.

7.5k - Decisions aren't your thing
10k - Like your truck
15k - Must be a car person
20k - Priority check / teenager
25k - Trusts the "signature" guarantee
30k - ...

I was going to ask this question later when I was ready to do my first oil change. But now that someone has opened the door... Do we have grease fittings onthe drive shaft u-joints like on Tacomas? Or anywhere else?

I just hit 50K on my 2020. Been doing 10K OCI. Sending a sample off to Blackstone to decide if I stay 10K or reduce it. I’ll post the results when I get them.

I do 5k oil change intervals on every vehicle I own. I like changing it.

Just explaining that simple maintenance is cheap.

Keep your oil changed and if it's got a grease fitting pump some in it.
