According to Fuelly, it's ~20% better (16.9 vs 13.9) and also edging out the 3.5l EB in the F150.

it does get better, has higher payload and higher towing, rides better, etc.

The only real question is will it have the longer term typical toyota reliability, but that will take a while to find out just like it did on the last gen.

Glass half empty: After 15 years, Toyota gave us another 6,000 lb 1/2 ton with 3 more mpg and 200-300 more lbs of payload. And it’s more complicated by an order of magnitude. Solidly mid- to rear-pack debut.

Glass half full: It does the same job the previous gen more efficiently. It makes its power at a far lower RPM band. Modern features (giant screen, pano sunroof) abound. The hybrid makes more power than every gas-engine HD truck on the market.

I would like to see it doing the job of a 3/4 ton on a Texas ranch for 100,000 miles like the previous gen. That would either shut the haters up or pour more fuel on the fire.

Stopping (like lights or signs) will require occasional acceleration, brake use, etc., which is good. But I think it's good to cycle the throttle at other times, if road conditions aren't forcing this anyway. I'd just like to point out that stopping for an hour to let the truck "rest", like an earlier poster mentioned, is completely unnecessary.

Weird, my F150 has been in once in 8 years for a dead nav system microphone replaced under warranty. Probably took them 5 minutes to swap it.

On the other hand, my Lexus GX has been in twice in 2 years for the SAIS problem, as well as a dead nav screen digitizer. The digitizer one was great, they told me I couldnt just get the new screen, I had to pay $8000 to replace the entire nav system that has the processing power of an Atari. So instead I had to pull the interior apart and remove the old digitizer from the screen in my kitchen and replace it with a chinese knockoff from ebay.

    dash.jpg

Now I am just waiting for the inevitable coolant leak from the valley cover plate under the intake manifold and my transmission to crap the bed as seems to be happening with a lot of GX's

Hi Everyone just an update. The vehicle was returned on January 30th after 3 months. The dealership support was phenomenal. However I was informed shortly after that Toyota Canada will not be offering any reimbursement of payments, warranties or anything else. Ive reached out to them 4 times and the case officer just wont respond to my calls even though the first call I had with him when the car was dropped off he verbally agreed to offering the payments back and/or a warranty which I mentioned in this thread. I will now be escalating this matter as they've offered no justification for denying me payment reimbursement. I shouldn't be making payments for a vehicle I have not had for 3 months. If anyone has any suggestions or solutions I would appreciate it. The truck itself drives fantastic, but there are multiple body panel issues from it being taken apart and put back together.

Did you pay for your own rental car those 3 months?

They provided a corolla. So I was paying for a tundra, but driving a corolla and spending money on a second pickup rental from time to time for my business and errands that I couldn't hold off on. Additionally the corolla couldn't get out of my street whenever there was even a light snow fall so I actually missed many days of work whenever there was snow because the last thing I needed was damages on a rental as well. The whole situation was a nightmare. The dealer guaranteed to have my truck back before Christmas so I held off on canceling a vacation but when Christmas rolled by they told me they need another month I had to cancel my drive down to Florida and lost my deposit. its ridiculous to have to even argue for my payments back.

My dad, an airplane mechanic, told me this same thing in 1970. I have followed that advice for every vehicle I have ever purchased new.

Bean counters are being pretty damn tight... not trying to make people happy for such a massive failure. My guess is that there are a lot more warranty expenses than they planned.

Well... Tell the Toyota guy that you'll be taking to social media to share your Toyota reliability experience and amazing customer service, and to make sure mention his name in all of it. That may help

All I can say is keep the pressure on corporate respectfully. I had a warranty issue on my wife’s sequoia interior that I raised multiple times, the first being at 18k miles. The dealership ultimately refused warranty and blamed it on Toyota. After speaking and escalating it through corporate they essentially gave me a credit for replacement of $1k which was more than the fix was going to cost. Keep fighting them and I’m sure you will be able to get resolution you’re happy with but customer service sure has seemed to go in the shitter the last few years. Best of luck!

How does a dealer refuse warranty AND blame it on Toyota? Isn't the whole point of the warranty to fix things Toyota messed up?

The dealer said Toyota corporate denied the warranty. When i spoke to Corporate, they said the dealer denied the warranty. At the end of the day, corporate stepped up and took care of things. I believe corporate because when i brought it to the dealer to raise the issue they immediately started saying it was normal wear and tear.

The engine bearing becoming damaged have nothing to do with oil changes, oil type, or anything of that matter. It was a mistake unfortunately, not the customers and not the only one :(

My tundra isn’t the the only one that did this I see. Mine broke Jan 13th spun the bearing, oil pressure dropped to zero and started knocking. Sucks but keep the pressure on Toyota.

Avoiding highways makes it a +20 hour trip. I guess it is worth it to avoid driving at high speeds consistently.

update: raised my concerns to the highest level. emailed the president of toyota north America. The presidents office got back to me and I spoke with Jenifer Shoebottom who called me and in a matter of 5 minutes treated me like a second class citizen, was incredibly disrespectful and told me I'm not entitled to anything. I tried to escalated it to a higher authority and she stated there's nobody above her and she's made up her mind. The dealership said that they've had 2 similar cases in the past 3 years which toyota provided both with warranties/financial assistance. what was the difference between those customers and me? she had no answer and was doing everything she can to hang up get rid of me. I left a review with BBB and traded in the truck. I still don't agree with its oil pressure level at idle Temps.

There is another thread in the sticky section to report mechanical issues. As others have mentioned would need to get build dates to see if there is an issue or isolated events to try and narrow down what caused it.

    What did you buy?

It's looking like... if I ever need to get another truck... I'll have a lot more viable models to choose from, though none very reliable.

Reading this thread has scared the piss outta me! I am currently battling Stelantis/Ram for a failed fuel pump and diesel in my oil. I'm lucky because I've been doing oil analysis since I bought the truck in 16 and I was able to catch it in time. I have a 23 tundra Hybrid on order and now I think that I want a Tacoma instead!

I had a look, and Consumer Report had the reliability of the of 2022 Tundra as average overall. I don't think these problems are too common, and hopefully this issue is fixed on the ones coming off the line.
