It a good idea to run a oil catch can system in these 5.7s?

you have a built in oil separator already in the 5.7.

Unless you are boosted, its really not necessary.

There is a separator system built into the motor itself. There is a diagram but I dont have it handy.

I have a JLT and it catches plenty of slime that would otherwise go into the combustion mix. Not a huge concern, but not good either. For like $200 or so you can get cleaner combustion and there is nothing wrong with that. Hit the search box above and you can read some other threads on the subject and see some pictures of the slime from some trucks including my own.

Considering it is internal, i dont think so. Never seen anything regarding maintenance on that system, on this forum or in the manual. Nor have I heard of any failures related to this.

Use a JLT here. Works well and about half to 2/3rds full after 5 to 6000 miles. Figure I'm keeping the truck a long time so might as well try to keep it free of gunk.

Is it totally necessary probably not but it sure doesn't hurt.

There is a built in oil separator, but it does not do anything for what is vented from the PCV valve which gets recirculated into the intake of the engine. A catch can is useful for catching what comes out of the PCV valve and has some minor benefits, and can be bought relatively cheap. They’re also definitely not a must have. I guess decide if it’s worth the $200 or so to you to catch the slime that would recirculate into the intake and onto the valves, and also can lower the effective octane rating of the fuel. It also has to be emptied from time to time.

@Tsm503 I was doing some research on this in the past and all that is said here is in line with what I found previously. I actually ordered my J&L this morning before even seeing this thread. My plan is to have my truck for a LONG time, so if I can help keep it running smoothly, I see it as a benefit. Cost me $159 shipped. It won't provide any immediate or noticeable returns, but if you think about the function, it cannot negatively impact you, especially 5, 10, 15 years from now if you still have the same truck.

If you don't see yourself with the truck in 5 or 6 years, then maybe spend the $159 on something that might be more noticeable or more enjoyed within you and your trucks love affair :D

I put one in front of the PVC & get a reasonable amount every 1k miles, got it cheap on eBay & even if it's unnecessary I like not putting oil in my intake.

Yes, how long you intend to keep the truck should be a factor in the decision. I know it was part of what influenced me. Not that I don't appreciate clean combustion for top performance:D

I definitely intend to keep this truck for as long as possible and am hoping to hand it down to one of my sons. I have already installed a transmission cooler from Genuine Cooling Systems. I want to do all that I can to help the powertrain last as long as possible. Are there negatives to having this oil separator installed? Does the extra travel of the exhaust gases cause issues or the potential of condensation of water and oil flowing into the PCV due to the extra travel? I may be overthinking, thanks everyone for your reply’s

Short answer, do it! Secondly, if you want to keep it for a while like you said, look into a Masterlube pre oiler. This will significantly lessen the engine and starter wear. When you call and talk to Kerry the owner of the company and engineer of the system, he will talk your ear off, so plan ahead and have your questions ready. You can find the needed tee fitting for the oil sending unit port at Yotashop.com. The oiler will push oil pressure through that port to prelube each time before you turn the key. Provided you activate it of course! Good on you for your long term plans. Sort of similar plans here.

Shoot, I hope for 7 figures. Got close with some old Ford and Mazda products using conventional oil and pushing them really hard. Many of the miles were dirt washboard roads as well. So, I'm not impressed with 500k on a mostly highway driven modern day powertrain running on synthetic oil.

Thousands upon thousands of high mileage trucks with no catch can. Just keep up on maintenance.

I installed one couple weeks ago. This is what I found after 1000 miles.
I don’t think is necessary to have one, it’s 1 more thing to maintain and I love to do maintenance on my truck.

I've got a J&L primarily because my motor is direct injection. Well worth the cost.

For DI only and FI engines it's worth it, with old school port injection it's kind of like having an extended warranty, get it for the feel goods. Also be aware that in very cold climates and depending on the location of the catch can, it's possible for the can to build condensation that could freeze inside of it or inside of the lines running to/from it. I saw this happen on some other forums a while back, I don't remember the exact circumstances but I know having it closer to the engine is better. On one of my recent Chevy trucks, the easiest install was to put it in the spare battery location near the headlight. I used that and half of what I poured out was water, no bueno. After moving it to the second harder to reach location on the fire wall by the engine, I got a lot less water.

Custom separator kits come with the correct length hoses and proper location bracket to avoid condensation issues. I have zero issues with my J&L kit. Best to spend more scratch and buy a custom fit kit. I see no need to use a separator on a non DI motor.
