    Hello everyone,

I purchased a 2022 Tundra off the lot with no tow package. I tried to add the tow package during purchase and there were none available yet through Toyota. I had an aftermarket tow package installed but neither I or the installer can get the break or indicator lights working, only the running lights. We have checked all fuses. I have called multiple dealerships and cannot get anyone to answer the question. It appears that some of the spots for needed tow fuses do not exist in my truck, rather there are cards in the designated space. I literally have my truck at the dealership right now for the recall and they said they don't have time to figure it out today.

Does anyone know if I need to just go old school and add the box to the back and piggyback of my lights or is there something I'm missing? The truck had the connection for the 7 pin with multiple wires going to it but only one is hot?

This new truck has been a pain in the a--. Finally got airbags after waiting 6 months.

    Any feedback would be appreciated!

You can contact Sparks Toyota regarding the issue. Sparks is an authorized vendor here but last post was Jan 22. There's an on-line chat there on Parts section. Most likely they'll need the VIN.

Thanks, I found the part I needed and called the dealership to light a fire. I just spoke with them now and they are installing to correct the issue. I will follow up with the fix for future reference.

keep us posted, I had to install 2 relays and steal power from random wires, but I am curious how it is done the right way. Also, I had a local welder weld me the receiver , needed to remove the last cross beam for him to weld it. - towing all summer now, no issues. !! .... forgot, added an aftermarket brake controller, plugged into the ready plug under the dash

IMG_4178.jpg IMG_4177.jpg IMG_4177.jpg Update- The dealership was not able to install and correct the issue. SO i bought the part from another dealership who could not tell me where it needs to be installed. **Tow Converter Relay** There are lots of forums for highlanders and other Toyotas that talk about installing this for the same issue. Does anyone with the tow package know where to install this? I will post a picture of what it looks like.

interested too .... just bought an "in transit" SR and it doesn't have factory tow hitch installed. figured it would be a piece of cake to bolt up an aftermarket one on my own. maybe not?

Wanted to bump this to see if you were able to figure out the issue? My truck came with the 7 & 4 pin plugs installed but was missing the relays and fuses for the trailer lights. Added relays & fuses but still don’t have brake lights or turn signals. I’ve followed the wiring harness into the cab and into a panel under the back seat storage but I’m lost on what to check next.

I just installed a hitch on a customer truck, DC SR. and the tow converter relay is required to make the trailer hookup function.

First post! Just put a deposit down on a 2023 SR crewmax and I too could not find one with the SR tow package. Did the process of getting the harness to work get figured out? I see a tow converter needs to be installed but where exactly? Also, what other fuses and or relays do I need to order? Lastly...what about the connector that goes into the space on the bumper, does that need to be ordered as well? Thanks in advance!

I am giving you a bump, green_plaid, because I am in the same situation. I'd assume the others in this thread worked out the issues, and could tell us what is missing? I don't necessarily need a full write up with part numbers, but at least a guide of what is needed (for example, maybe you replaced two relays in the fuse box, the relay under the rear right seat, and bought a harness and trim to complete it) Just trying to get an idea of how many components were needed to get it done right.

I just got the truck today! I looked all over to find the tow converter relay and found it behind the passenger side rear seat behind the storage panels. Mine actually had it installed so I got lucky otherwise I was prepared to use one from a Lexus RX350 as they are on nationwide backorder. Then all I had to do was install a relay (the blue one) next to the one for the horn (can reference the horn one for the part number) in the relay/fuse box on the left side of the engine bay (all other tow related fuses were installed already too). After putting that in and the part that goes in the rear bumper...oh and the brake controller harness everything worked (Tekonsha 3040). Will be installing a Curt hitch tomorrow.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. I have been watching two SR models that a dealer about an hour away has, $2600 off each. I think I might pull the trigger based on this information.

I think I got about the same off of mine...$2500. was surprised they were discounted off MSRP. So the Curt hitch is on. That was a pain for sure. The bolts you remove also hold on the bumper so don't pull them out all the way. Also the hitch ends weren't entirely square to the tube so I gently dropped the edge of it on a piece of wood to make it square. All in now and all is great! Redarc Liberty controller going in later today then hitching up and going camping tomorrow!

Also another suggestion...just buy the under hood relays and trailer connector for the bumper and give that a try. If you have power then there is no need to tear apart the back storage area and waste time and money. If I would have checked first it would have saved me $55 for the used relay I bought and 45 minutes.

I bought the SR. I contacted Sparks Parts about this first, and they could not get information on what the fuses are - I had a local dealer say they would get back to me about what fuses I need, and they have not followed up with me.

I am hoping you or someone can check the what the fuse relays are in the passenger side fuse box under the hood? I do not have them, so I have to add them.. They are the fuses that would be labeled "TOWING TAIL" and "TOWING BK/UP" I don't know if they are both just ordinary relays that would match the horn relay, or if they are given a part number (my 2003 Toyota had some relays that could be swapped, some that could not).

The backup one I dont think is necessary because mine worked fine without it. However I added it because I got a pack of 2 from Amazon for cheap. And you are correct...it's just two relays identical to the horn one. When I bought mine they had a bunch of hybrid ones on the lot and I confirmed that they were the same part number.

I have also towed my camper 2x and everything worked perfectly. Still need to get a diode so the manual brake doesn't back feed and set off a whole bunch of dash lights. That aside...as long as you don't manually activate the brakes...all works great.

Hey, guys. I'm considering a '23 SR w/o factory hitch and trying to figure out what I need to get the wiring set up correctly. I've never done a hitch install but pretty competent if I had the instructions for the wiring. That said I'm a bit lost trying to figure out what all I need and where to tap into the existing factory wiring. Has anyone found a step by step guide anywhere?

I will do a write up once my towing converter relay comes in, because this was kind of a PITA to gather the information together. I will have each part number and photos of where they go in the truck. I got to the point where I had everything but the converter relay (goes behind a panel in the backseat), and I haven't pulled the panel yet. I know it's missing because I only have running lights for the trailer. All of that said...I think its worth it provided you are getting money off MSRP. User green_plaid had the relay in his truck already, and it is random what they include or remove when they delete the towing package.

Without photos, here is a shopping list of what parts you might need. Check the vehicle before you order:

90080-87026 - 2 PCS - Passenger side fuse box under hood, there are two relays spots, labeled TOWING TAIL and TOWING BK/UP, we don't know if both are actually needed. They are the same relay as the horn. $10-20

I had no other fuses missing related to towing in that box, but I think there is a Toyota size 30A fuse labeled for towing.

81985-34040 - 1 PC - Tow converter relay. This is behind the passenger side backseat, it resides behind the plastic panel trim. It's pictured earlier in the thread. I haven't added this yet. If you shop around, you can find it discounted to about $145 with tax/shipping

82824-0C150 - 1 PC - 7 Pin round and 4 Pin blade Towing Connector plug. The truck comes with a dummy plastic insert in this spot, it is held on by a clip on the back of the bumper. Super easy to change out. $25

Curt Hitch 14022 - 1PC - factory hitch receiver is not an option, the last I checked. You just reuse the 6 bumper bolts to mount this. $318 shipped at NAPA Online.

So all in, about $510. There isn't money saved with this option vs getting one with the tow package - its really about whether there is a truck on the lot you want missing tow package. Pretty much everyone says the factory trailer brake controller is terrible, so go aftermarket - cheaper and better.

Thanks for this! Yeah I can’t find an SR CM 4x4 anywhere within 500 miles of my with a tow package but figure I gotta be able to do it cheaper than the $1800 the dealer quoted. Truck is $2300 off MSRP.

My 2023 SR crewmax 4x4 came with the tow converter relay even though I didn't have the towing package. I would check to see if you have it before you order it.

Where was yours located exactly? I tore up the back pretty good. Only thing I found was an open end attached to the C-pillar. The side, not the rear of the cab
