    Awesome! Good work!

    1. Could we please get a better photo of that part number of the camera?

    2. How can we plug the holes once we remove the cameras from top brake light?

    3. It would be great to have a mount for this camera to either install it inside of the camper (recessed mount) or exterior mount (will probably be less esthetically pleasing)

Attached some more for you. [IMG]

    2. How can we plug the holes once we remove the cameras from top brake light?
Not sure yet, tape or a small 3d print. as you can see from the next pic, the back of the light isnt actually sealed to the truck. its not waterproof at all, so if water gets in the camera holes it would just leak down and out, not into the cabin.

-good idea on a flush mount! I wasnt thinking about a mounting solution that has the body of the camera inside the camper! I'll design something for this. Right now im thinking there will be a few prints to choose from, DRV camera mount, SPA camera mount (I'm just going to have this mounted inside looking into the camper, but for those who want it external), Twin camera mount, Recessed DRV camera mount.

@Kap1 How thick is your camper? Mine is sheet metal so for recessed I'm just going to have the lens protrude 1/4" should be plenty to clear my sheet metal camper. Curious what would work for you?

I have a 2023 Tundra and would like to add a SmartCap, but alas the cameras are in the way. It looks like this is being worked on, but not figured out all the way yet. I will check back to see if any aftermarket parts are created.

Do you mind running out to your truck and double checking that the camera on the left drivers side is indeed the DRV camera. Just making sure i'm modeling the right one right now. If you want pics of the other camera i have those too

Hi, mine is aluminum 0.063 in thick

    Yes 1/4in should probably work.

Do you have any idea on how it can be mounted into the cap? Maybe something along drilling 3/8 in hole in back of the shell, placing some sort of a plastic weather tight cover on the outside and mounting camera on the inside of the cap. Just quickly brainstorming...

    Austin,
Yes you are correct the Left (drivers side) camera is for the digital rear view mirror. Thanks for the additional photos.

Ordered my leer canopy today and will definitely be ordering your extension cable. I am curious if you noticed what angle the digital rearview mirror camera sits in the 3rd break light. I know you can do vertical adjustments through the rear view mirror but, I'm not sure to what extent.
Ideally I would like to drill through the canopy and install the camera below the 3rd break light.

Thanks for double checking Rod! I have some versions printing now. hoping to offer a few different options for camera mounting. I finally bit the bullet and bought a nice 3d printer, so the kit will come with 3d printed camera closeouts and potentially a few other things- like a grommet style cover to cover the hole left by the wiring harness removal.
@Rusty21 The DRV camera seems to be angled slightly below the horizon. Thats going to be something i'll fine tune on the prints to make sure its correct. Are you saying you would also prefer an option that mounts inside the canopy and only the lens protrudes through?

I would like a clean look either only having the lens protruding through the canopy or mounted behind the glass. Behind the glass would be easier and require not voiding the canopy warranty.

Okay, behind glass should be pretty easy to do also. Does drilling holes void Leer's warranty? That would be pretty unfortunate.

I don’t think behind the glass will be the best location. You would have be sure that the wiring harness can withstand repeated flexing at cold temperatures. Just something to consider.

Oh right because it opens? It should be fine, its a nice thick steel braided cable. I would be more concerned with the double-sided tape pulling off or loosening as its opened repeatedly. I'll offer a few different prints and people can decide which works best for them. I appreciate y'alls help in the development of this kit.

Sounds like a type of small coax. Check the temperature rating. It should be flex tested down to -40F as should the adhesive used on double sided tape or as low as you can find. I’ve spent a lot of years dealing with technology operating in extreme cold and things happen that you don’t expect.

Luckily its not coax, its 26AWG copper. twin twisted. might still get brittle at -40... But if it breaks at that temp, ill send a free replacement no biggie.

I was thinking a bracket that mounts to the ceiling of the canopy, or the area above the window where the dome light is usually installed. The bracket could be made with an adjustable locking arm that would allow multiple installation areas without having to worry about designing multiple fixed angled brackets. That way the camera would not have to deal with the stress of the canopy window opening like it would if it was installed on the glass. There could be a vibration issue with an adjustable arm though.

This would be ideal for my Leer topper. There is that useless domelight in the center that alreadY has screws in it, so no new drilling required- would just bracket into it or remove the dome light.

mother option would be mounting it on my Thule racks exposed to the elements

    Hi @GG.Offroad
You mentioned that the camera cable are shielded wires. Since you've had success with relocating the rearview camera. Do you know if the same type of wires can be used(with different connectors) to extend the backup camera?

I have a tire carrier that covers the backup camera, I was thinking to relocate the camera.

I haven't had the tailgate camera out yet, but its very likely the same connector. These cables should work. Can you take pics of the camera and cable?

I have this picture I took awhile back when I cut the original cable from inside the tail gate and the female connect that plugs underneath the truck bed.

I tried using a 5 wire cable to extend it but I wasn't able to get any video feed.

I just pre-ordered your cable hoping thst it will work for my need.

Thanks for the pic, yes my cables have the male and female end of that grey connector shown in your photo. So if you use the original short cable mine would extend the connection between it and the truck.

Do you have any more pics? Curious for more pictures of the back of that camera.

The back of the camera appears to be the same as the rearview camera. However I did trim some of the plastic on the camera housing in order to fit where it will be located.

I can provide more pictures when I get the truck back from the shop(camera is in the truck).

Super excited to test your cable now. Thank you! @GG.Offroad

Excited to see where you all net out with this. Taking delivery of my new Tundra next week and considering a topper.

@GG.Offroad I'm local to Denver and am also interested in how your topper pans out (assuming you haven’t sold your inventory).

@GG.Offroad Do you have an update here? I have a 2023 Crewmax with the rear view camera and I'm about to put an ARE Z2 topper on it. Will your mounting kit work to attach to this? Would love to be able to keep that rear view camera... makes night driving 100x easier. Thank you!

We can figure out something that works for the ARE Z2! I have a suction cup glass mount designed if that would work for you. Can you share pics of the setup and where you would want it to mount? What about drilling it?

@GG.Offroad I'll be honest, I know nothing, like nothing, about any of this. I will be having Leroy's Customs in minneapolis install it. I just want to get the kit and bring it to them. If I drill it will it challenge the water barrier?

Super interested to see any photos of installed cameras, with the extension, on a topper/shell!

I have an ARE Overland coming soon and need a solution or some ideas on how ya'll are mounting the camera to the shell.

    Thanks!
