I used to run marathons and play a lot of tennis then at 23 years old I got married and soon had four kids so time for that stuff disappeared. Then almost 20 years on delivery trucks really wrecked my joints, especially my shoulders, so lifting any weights was an issue (and an excuse). However in January 2022 I realized I had been in an office job for 9 full years, my kids were almost all grown and at 53 years old I did have time to get some fitness back in my life if I would just get off my ass. I'm 6'1" and should probably be around 185 pounds but I'd settle for anything under 200. Like everyone does in January I joined the gym and discovered that I could walk on the tread mills without having knee issues. Then I discovered I felt good enough to walk faster and even jog a bit without the knees swelling up! Now I am at 8 months of 3.5 miles at least 3 or 4 days per week & some motion/resistance exercises for my shoulders. I have weighed as much as 228 but I'm now down to 213. The 36" pants are now loose when I previously struggled to button them just last winter. I can play tennis with my youngest son and (almost) keep up with him for 2 hours. These results have me wanting to continue for sure.

This thread has already been helpful in that I'm going to try the yoga to get this old body a little flexible as I have come to realize that my 53 year old hamstrings hate me. I'm already done with excuses for not trying through setting goals for mileage by the month etc. Just reading the results of others and great info being shared lets me know that there are so many good reasons to enjoy living well!

Lastly, I have no willpower for eating properly and my wife is an amazing cook. But I have cut soda almost all the way out and average over 50 oz of water daily. Soda was tough in that I worked 9 years at Pepsi and have that stuff in my bloodstream. I'm having some luck with portion control and my next goal is to conquer the late night eating that happens when I can't sleep. Yoga or jogging suggestions are welcome and thanks for the positive lift today. I am definitely glad to discuss old man walking / running.

Well, to be clear, that's not all that I do. That's for the 'lifting' part. I may branch out in a bit, but honestly, for a solid two years (leading up to the last few months), I did very little. Between my Dad passing away in 2019, COVID, a lithotripsy in May 2020 (where they go in and blow apart the kidney stone), promotion in the midst of that, etc., suffice to say I was busy as hell, but finally got back at it, so what I'm trying to do now is build up the base, as it were.

Once I get a bit further into it I'll likely branch out more than I am now.

Yeah, I found the same. I'm 46, and while I do recovery pretty quickly, I'm not going to say I recover as quickly as I did in my 20's, obviously. That's partially why I do the 5x5 for now; I basically do that 3x a week (for now), and the other 4 days I do HIIT, calisthenics, and honestly some days I'll just walk/run/stretch.

Heh. This was an issue for me right up until May 2020. I had some pretty ridiculous lower back pain while helping a buddy cut down and move a cedar tree. I remember thinking "...good Lord I know I need to lose a few, but back pain?"

I remembered that I'd had a kidney stone 'waiting in the wings' when I passed one in 2018; so i called the doc I saw then. They did an ultrasound, and turns out I had a 6mm x 9mm S-shaped kidney stone. He said "You *CAN* pass that if you want...LOL"

I opted for a lithotripsy...and I'm not even kidding a little when I say I would go full vegeterian for life to avoid THAT sh*t again. I'm dead serious. My body heals ridiculously quickly, blood clots quickly, etc....but let me tell you, a blood clot in a stent from your kidney to your d**k is pure murder. Prior to that point I did not know it was possible to lose 13 pounds in 5 days by barfing/etc. :eek2:

A few months after that I went in for a whiz quiz, and about the ONLY thing I changed was to only drink water and seltzer. Doc said "I dunno what you're doing but your numbers are perfect."

This means my dumb @$$ got a kidney stone or two for no other reason than not drinking enough water. :frusty::rant:

So now I drink water, seltzer, coffee, the occasional beer, and that's about it. I've had two sodas since then and fear of another kidney stone about gave me an anxiety attack while drinking them.

For the past 30 years I have been running 4 miles every day before work on my treadmill. Now that I am retired, I plan on sticking with my routine to keep active and fit.

Whatever this forum told me to do
keeping active and fit is the key.

    I dig learning assessment protocols.

in short, you should always be able to:
lift your arms straight up over your head.
do a full squat - with feet flat (chinese man squat)
    walk 3 miles brisk
lay down on floor & be able to get up

    do compound movements. squat/bench/deadlift/pullup
do a shoulder circuit - DB overhead press, front plate raise, face pulls

I started weight training in '86. never stopped.

    @ 55 SQ-450 Bench 315 Dead 450

have an awesome garage setup with the best equip*. safety cage with monolift/gluteham/rev hyper, etc

recently had a great day....my 21yr old outlifted me. I started him @ 13. He kept the great habits I taught him.

for the more cerebral lifters - I've trained conjugate periodization since '90. commonly called westside style.

*the garage stereo is all my old car stereo speakers & subs. sounds righteous. wife calls me immature.

@nobodyintexas - that's a great point. Glad to say I can do all of the above (though my bench is not anywhere near 315 simply because a) I've had shoulder surgery and b) I fell off for a few - it's closer to 225 or so). But yeah, one of the reasons I like/liked CrossFit to begin with was the actual functional training it taught me. (I belonged to a box that *actually* placed a ton of focus on getting the movements RIGHT instead of just doing stuff fast; and they didn't do that kipping pull-up crap.) I'm 46 and while I wouldn't say I'm in perfect shape...I'm amazed @ the number of people my age or younger who look 10-20 years older than I do.

I had to show a few officers my driver's license where I work (Army post in MO) before they believed I was 46 instead of late 30's at the highest. :)

My goal is to be absolutely yoked and beat my daughter's boyfriends up in the future. I've got another 13 years until my first will be allowed to date, but let's say 10 years just to be safe.

Don't forget load up on water everyday. Water moves all those nutrients to your muscles. Without large amounts of water intake, youll progress slower. I didn't see a large change in my mass until I began to really focus on just drinking water (coupled with diet obviously). At a good mass/cardiovascular ratio I can fit 190lbs on my relatively small frame.

Unfortunately my wrist surgery lost me about 20 lbs in just under 3 months of not lifting. I'm back up 10 lbs but it's always a slow process regaining.

Good catch! I had that in there at one point where I mentioned creatine, but I made so many edits I must have accidentally deleted it. Water is absolutely and always crucial.

And sorry to hear that about your injury, but great to hear you're getting back on track. It's tough, and I know how it goes. At 6'1" and during my late 20s I was at 240 lbs and pretty shredded with a 33" waist. Then I picked up a graveyard shift. My body started rejecting the hours after a few months, and I was only getting 2-3 hours sleep a day, and I eventually stopped training due to lack of sleep. I stuck it out for close to 6 mos and in the process dropped down to 190/195 (can't remember exactly). I was reed thin by comparison. I never fully recovered but managed to get myself back to 225, but it took a few years since I prefer to stay natural. These days I'm leaner at 210.

Eating healthy via good lifestyle is the only key that works. Everything else you’re picking locks to get in, and eventually they throw you out once you’re caught.

Soup is my secret to losing weight and eating hearty meals. I always say:
“The more you soup, the more you poop”

You’ll shed tons of weight with soup & quinoa.
I alternate between wild rice and quinoa with my soups. Add in a mountain bike for fitness and you’ll be shredded.

Keep it up man! I've got back into lifting heavy last July, getting into 4.5 plate deadlifts now, solid 4 plate squat in a few months probably. Bench is 2.5 plates. And the best part - feeling really good compared to few years ago, no more back pain, no more shoulder pain! Gonna train to maybe run half-marathon this year too :D

I'm trying to get into running myself right now(past 30 now) and oh man is it hard to even run 5 miles. So much respect for people who can actually complete a marathon!

Have been a weight lifter, runner and sprinter most of my life with a heart defect that never limited me but which I knew I was probably going to have to get fixed at some point.

    Open heart surgery was 8/23.

    Discharge 4 days later.

In Week 1 after discharge, walking a block was exhausting and I could never feel comfortable in any position but I forced myself to at least go to the corner and back.

Week 2, longer walks became possible.

Week 3, started tossing in a half a block jog with my walks. (Jogging was Okd by the surgeon when I felt comfortable with it.)

It is just about at week 5 and I am doing 5-6 laps around a quarter mile track jogging a lap and walking a lap.

By week 6 for my checkup I hope to be jogging 2 laps and maybe get the OK for light dumbell upper body work.

By week 8 I'd like to be back to my 100 meter sprints or jogging a couple miles
    Per day.

Heavy lifting and pushups/situps may have to wait until week 10-12.

Dropped from 249 to 215 over the last year, but more importantly from 35% body fat to 15-16%. The craziest thing to me has been how differently I’m treated in general.

I am finding as I get back to a more intense routine post heart surgery getting into my mid 40s that more variety in my cardio is keeping me motivated and helping with joint pain. It used to be run, run, run. Now One workout might be sprints, the next might be a jog. Maybe an easy 15-20 minutes on the eliptical in the next one, then 9-10 miles on the bike after that.

To spice it up I might throw in some time at the track. A lap, pushups, a lap, situps, a lap, pullups or burpees. Repeat 4-6 times in 15-20 minutes and call it a day.

My joints are thanking me, my conditioning is getting even better than pre surgery and I'm doing my cardio more consistently because every single workout isn't a killer. Not grinding myself down to a pulp every single time I go out has been key to staying consistent.

I started swimming mid-january with the goal of doing a sprint triathlon on June 15. It's a .5 mile swim, 14mile bike ride and a 5k run.

I never swam before this year so I'm working on technique. I hope by mid-march my core and limbs are synchronized enough for me to start focusing on endurance.

It's not really my goal to lose weight, but I've lost 8lbs by swimming 1hr everyday.

    Stopping back by here...

Another excellent video from Dave Tate.

Matt Wenning sums up the present training atmosphere and how to stay healthy for the long term.

    good stuff.

warning - this will piss off more than a few people (confirmation bias), but every word is gold.

Did a little fitness comp with a buddy this weekend - it was a cool event but a bit expensive. I need to work on running for sure!

Careful doing triathlons, they can be addictive. Back in my late 20’s and early 30’ I used to do tri’s, both sprint and olympic lengths I had a lot of fun doing them. I was a very slow swimmer...like really, really slow. In fact i’d wear water wings while swimming. I’d go back and look at the results and my swim times would always be the slowest of the day (including the 80 year old women). The bicycle that i chose to race on was also really slow. I could usually post up the fastest time for running though.

And my favorite part about triathlons?...all the food afterwards.

Nice work! And that’s the exact reason i quit doing tri’s.
